Tv pick: Are you autistic?

They talked about in just now on bbc breakfast and it was interesting, that many in the uk have it, are you also going to watch it? It starts on ch4 10pm

I saw a trailer but I doubt if I'll watch it. Was the figure quoted in the trailer correct that 1 in a 100 are autistic? Or on the spectrum. In other words 1% of the population.

All that concerns me is that people will watch and diagnose themselves.

I’ve got it on my planner, as I’ve got 2 adult sons undiagnosed autistic. Getting adults diagnosed is extremely difficult. Will be interesting to watch x

My sons autistic. Aspergers and is on the bad end of the spectrum. We knew from birth that he wasn’t quite right and it took 9 years to have him diagnosed. And when he was diagnosed we were handed a leaflet and told bye. Thier was no support for years and we had to fight to get extra help in school His type of aspergers is on the violent side so when he kicks off the trigger is usually quite a small reason that most of us would shrug off but whereas he will punch things including himself. He’s now 21 and is bigger so the punches are quite damaging. What I know do is physically drag him outside to the shed where I have a punch bag where I leave him to it to get rid of the feelings.

I will record it as my 13yr old (high functioning autistic and diagnosed) son wants to watch it as he is always interested in such programmes that seek to explain his condition

I have done an essay on both aspergers and autism. Doesn't make me any expert by any means so I will definitely be watching.

You really do have to go looking for help and put in self referrals to get anywhere. But there is help out there. No idea of your sons age. But your local carers centre, national autistic society and cahms, and your own Dr are good places to start asking for help. Also look for any local support groups via social media or any online group for support.

I think there is a lot of ignorance surrounding it too ..

Perhaps this programme can shed some light but i am guessing only ppl like myself who are indirectly affected by it will watch

This is true, I've come close to thumping people before.

Going on holiday one year we asked to go on first as it's too much for them with all the people and noise. Bloke behind me said 'I wish I had a spastic kid so I could get on first' how I didn't thump him I don't know.

Yes that is correct, that about 1 in 100 have it.

That's because it shows up earlier in boys, mine were diagnosed at 3, shows up much later in girls, my daughter was 15.

By the time a lot of girls/women are diagnosed they have been living with it for most of their lives and have adapted if it's not that severe. One of my lads is at the lower end and is doing great, good exam results and at college doing well with limited support.

Obviously if it's very severe they can't adapt as in the case of my daughter. We always suspected but it wasn't obvious until she was older.
