"My ex wife walked out on myself and our children a month after i left the army. I suppose she married the uniform rather than the man. I had just started my first civvie job at 41. I thought we were still in a loving relationship. I was. I remember my son phoning me up asking where mum was. I hadnt a clue. Left work early , got home and she wasnt there. Clothes had gone etc. No note nothing. I rang the in laws but they didnt know. Her mobile was off. Hours went by then the mother in law rang to tell me that she had gone off with a some guy she had met who was searving in my old battalion. I admit , it hit me for six. I had two children aged 14 and 12. I juggled work , the kids and a broken heart. Then after a while it spurred me on. I invested my lump sum payment into a business and worked so damn hard. Things started to get better. The investment worked so money wasnt a problem. The children helped , they were great. They just got on with it. She came back several months later and wanted to try again. I told her that it wasnt just me who needed to think about it but also the children. So we waited until they came home. I can still see and hear my 15 year old daughter say to her when she saw her mum " Grass isnt always greener is it ? You want bank ? You can just fuck off , we are doing great without you " The only time i have ever heard her swear. So she left there and then. Ive seen her a few times over the years. Family stuff. I was surprised when my daughter married that she invited her mum but as she said " theres times when we should try to be friendly". It was a shock when she left but looking back now im sort off glad she did. It made me a much better father." Kudos to you sir

"Is that the one with Christopher Eccleston? I like him. Forgot it was on. Loved him in The A word. " Yes. Surprised me cos I didn't watch it until last night. Thought it was a one off .... bit sad it wasn't but it was well written. Like watching life unfold and learning a little.

"I walked out. I waited until the kids were older but it didnt make it any easier. Always remember that you dont know what goes on behind closed doors and just because things look perfect from the outside this is not always the case. It was the hardest thing i ever done but on reflection it was also the best.x" Know how you feel been the hardest thing you ever done. I left my ex-husband after 21 year's once the kids was older to understand.no one knows what goes on and shocked when woman leaves the kids .I asked each of my kids what they wanted and they said to stay with there dad.

"Watching a programme on the TV about a wife that walks out on her husband and kids and the struggles of him coping with the affects of this...just couldn't imagine walking out on someone but I guess many people have reasons to do so..." The scary thing is that these things really do happen to both men and women in real life.
