I have an appointment at the docs today.

I work 25 miles from home, and work til 5pm so it's down to the good nature of my manager that I can leave at 3.15pm to attend "the only" appointment available.

The traffic was shite so I phoned the docs and said I was about 15 mins away bit should just make it on time.

She told me I might not be able to be seen if I am not on time. I explained and said I cannot control the traffic but am really doing my best.

Ten minutes later I am not moving but not far away so I call again... We will need to check she said, you might not be able to be seen.

I repeated AGAIN about my situation and she said I can't promise you will be seen (I am now getting pissed off)

I walk in the surgery at 3.59, there's a humongous queue so I get to the desk at 4.10.

I make a point of saying I was here on time and the specialist I am seeing happens to come out and says "Of course I will see you, I'm running late"

I am going to ask to see the practice manager and have a polite rant because the receptionist was bang out of order, and it's not a though I didn't call them to explain...

I feel better for letting this out...

I know you can’t generalise but I think many doctor receptionists become power mad and think they are rationers of appointments. I’ve found it really hard recently to get appointments and when I get there the place is empty.

They hide behind the obligatory ‘ offensive behaviour wont be tolerated ‘ signs, and don’t seem to exercise compassion or common sense.

I think with the state of the nhs, the lack of GPs to service our ever increasing population and the amount of demand for appointments the receptionists have a pretty stressful job with a strict set of rules for managing appointments.

You said she told you you "might not" be seen. It's probably a standard answer to any similar situation since taking time out to go check if the doctor is running on time or not would delay both you and them.

There's so many people judge the "mini dictators" for doing their job in the way they are told to do it. Yes it's frustrating trying to get an appointment but I can imagine it's much worse trying to manage limited resources whilst listening to every second person insist their condition is life threatening and they must be seen that day.

Agreed, and let's not forget they also have to placate the doctors who are quite capable of reading the riot act to staff and then turning on the charm with the patient.

Yep another violent agreement here - must be an incredibly frustrating job at times, especially when they can't fit someone in despite wanting to. And let's not forget they only have someone's word for it that there's a genuine reason for the delay, and not that the person simply didn't leave enough time to get there - not suggesting that was the case here OP but receptionists aren't to know either way, and therefore have to roll out a standard reply to all.

Ultimately though you got seen, so not really sure what the issue is?

That doesn't seem fair at all.

You wanted a promise that you'd be seen, but how could the receptionist do that? She had no idea when you would actually turn up.

You knew you'd be there soon, but imagine all the nonsense excuses and messing around the receptionist must have to put up with on a regular basis.

"...the receptionist was bang out of order..."

Really? Seriously? All she did was repeatedly point out that you might not be seen if you’re not there at your appointed time. Between you, your manager, and her, she’s the one least to blame for the situation you found yourself in.

You need to realise that the receptionist is in the middle between you and the doctor and as such gets it in the neck all day long from both parties. It's not just receptionists that have to put up with this at work, anyone who works as a "cog in the machine" between the higher ups and the public knows how frustrating it is to be the "buffer".

TBH I don’t really see your problem then!

Doctors are overworked and are often grouchy.

Receptionists are caught in the middle. Go figure! Haha

Never been a receptionist but I feel for them. Must be a nightmare having to deal with grumpy sick people all day.

To be fair nobody makes them do the job"

What an awful attitude. How would you react if someone said the same about you and your job. We are all human and can have off days.

Having said that if I felt someone had spoken to me rudely I would take it up with them at the time. As you say, you were keeping them updated on your situation and was not going to be a no show so I'm sure concessions could have been made.

Op how would you feel if you arrived on time and we’re kept waiting because the person before you was late but was seen anyway because they had phoned up to explain why?

The receptionists at my local doctors.

Think they are gods & that us lowly members of the public (who pay their wages with our taxes & national insurance contributions) should bow down to them & do as we are told.

Well they certainly don't like it when you report them to the doctor & also make a official written complaint about their arrogant behaviour/attitude & rudeness.

I must add that I don't use the doctors where I live I'm registered at one approximately 6 miles away.

Ano thats probably why the specialist was running late. Cos people don't make their appointments on time. It's not rocket science

The receptionist was a bit rude tho so it's fine lol x

There and to the left a bit

It's an accepted thing though that Doctor's/Dentist's appointments often run late - whilst they set a timetable and appointments system based on average consultation times, it only takes one person to have an ailment that requires slightly longer to assess or a patient that has to have bad news explained to them that requires additional reassurance etc for things to be pushed out of kilter.

I personally don't mind if I have to wait, after all the person before me could have just been told they have a terminal illness and may need extra time, or told their child needs a life saving operation and wants to fully understand the implications.

It's the receptionists though that have to bear the brunt of the moaning of others who are less understanding, so I can understand completely how difficult their job is - especially when faced with having to juggle an already crammed appointment book because of no shows and people who are running late.

Whilst the receptionist in this instance may or may not have had an attitude problem - from what the OP has told us she was only doing her job and saying what anyone else in a similar situation would have done.

I keep coming back to the fact though that there was no major drama, the appointment was honoured and that to be fuming is a little bit of an over reaction in the circumstances.

"I have an appointment at the docs today.

I know those receptionist have a job to do but my god they are like mini dictators with moustaches sometimes!!!

Geeky x

I'm now trying to think of a dictator that didn't have a moustache "

Maggie Thatcher? Oh shit did they have moustache waxing in the 80's

I very rarely go to the docs but a few weeks ago I phone up asking for a emergency appointment because I really wasn't feeling to well (heart racing, blood pressure through the roof and high temp) and the receptionist wanted to know the details so I explained only to be told that she thinks I have only got the flu and it doesn't required a emergency appointment and would book me in the next week to see my gp, after I pleaded with her that I needed to see someone that day she got shirty and abruptly ended the call.

Later on that evening I collapsed at home and got rushed into hospital via ambulance only to find out I had septicaemia

"By the way, employers can not stop you going to medical appointments!"
By the way, you need to revise your knowledge of employment law.

I’ll pay attention to anything you have to say about arrogance when you drop the ‘pay their wages’ bullshit. Get over yourself.

I was asked once what my symptoms were and I asked her where she gained her medical degree from. She said if I was that bad I should go to A&E; so I did and was seen right away. They didn't have 111 back then but I needed anti biotics any way.

I would have put in a complaint as it isn't the receptionists responsibility to triage patients.

Hope you complained, you nearly lost your life because of a receptionist!
