And have you found anything interesting? I have and recently we found out that my granpa was in the hitler jugend when he was younger, back then it was mandatory for everyone to be there, he later moved to sweden, he wasnt in germany a long time.

I found out there is a long history of priests on the irish side of my family, and on my dad's side, well, just six mad, sisters brothers and cousins in every corner of the UK, USA, Canada and the Caribbean, we're everywhere

Yes, 1066 and all that. Coat of arms etc. All totally average to be honest. One of my ancestors sold a huge chunk of land to William Penn in the USA. Wish he’d kept it. I might have owned Pennsylvania.

I have, it’s my main hobby (until my dad started doing it and went even further than I did!).

My ex husband side was quite interesting, one of his great uncles was king of the gypsies back in the day, the likeness of him and exes’ grandad was uncanny! Also on his side I found half brothers of his dads and hearing stories that his dad told me from another person who has never met him was quite eerie, his mum died when he was 6 months old and was brought up by his grandparents and his dad went off to have more kids but he never knew them, exes Dad didn’t want to know his brothers but he was happy knowing they were there and with that it also settled a few things for him like he always remembered his grandad signing a certain name but I found out it was a different name and the reason why.

My family wasn’t very interesting lol.

I found my biological parents through research when I was 14.That's all they were though biological parents as my mom and dad are my family and my birth parents are just hurtful scum and I hate them.My mom did look like me though.Curiosity got the better of me so I'm glad I did it but they were worse than I could of ever imagined.

oi was born in belize, I lived in scotland till I was three...I went o hong kong till I was five. after that I havent left the UK...ever. I have a national insurance number, from 16, I;ve worked and paid tax for almost all my life: I have to prove my right to work in the UK

I saved my pocket money for months to buy a train ticket 2 go and see them.I got there and knocked there door and told them who I was and all they did was invite me in and give me a glass of water and ask me what time I was going home.No hugs No explanations No emotions shown from them at all.They just sat there as cold as ice and kept dropping hints that they was going out.I spent less than a hour with them and was made 2 leave and go home on the train crying.Im happy I did find out who they was and what they was like though as now I no longer think of them.

I signed up to Ancestry co uk but I didn't really have much information to go on, If you have some details to start with like maiden names/Birth dates and places of your family or older family members who can help you fill in the blanks it will help you,

As you fill in your family tree the site will start linking your details to anyone who has already done a search for that family name or people on your list, If you start getting somewhere I would recommend buying the DNA kit from them as that will give you more information

I have traced my paternal line back to the year 950AD and they lived approx 3 miles from where I live.

We were landowners and Lairds up until the end of the Great War when my great grandfather sold the land.

3 of my more recent male relatives served with either SAS or SBS in 3 different conflicts.

My mother’s family sided with Eamon de Valera and Michael Collins and they blew up all Irish ancestral records.

I can trace my line directly back to Earl of Annandale, his son the Earl of Carrick later King of Scotland and his brother the King of Ireland

Wouldn’t know where to start my Dad side would be relatively straight forward but my Mum was adopted and now has Alzheimer’s and dementia and only seems to recall a small part of her past. She gets stressed out over the missing bits so will never push her.

Straight back to Malcolm of Scotland on one side, industrialists and factory owners with massive political consciences, sailor with Nelson and the founder of Melbourne on the others.

As far as where to search- ancestry is okay but lots of mistakes so be wary, and family search the Mormon site are useful. If you're lucky, you'll match into someone else's history. It soon goes beyond names and dates. I find myself visiting graves, buildings, old maps, learning about revolutions and effects of Napoleon wars. Why DID a young girl from an affluent family leave everything to settle and marry in NZ in 1843?
