"It's just banter" seems to be said a lot.

When does it stop being banter and start being offensive? Who is the judge?

Do you think people need to be less touchy or do you take responsibility if you offend someone?

Do you ever use "banter" to make a point in an underhand way?

Personally try to avoid "banter" especially in typing form. As it can so easily be misinterpreted.

A bit of both really. People can be cruel and very unkind in the name of ‘banter’, but sometimes, it really is just ‘banter’ !

It's only banter if both people see it that way. It stops being banter when it crosses the line in to bullying and I believe that people are very well aware of that but hide behind the laddish bants facade. At once being nasty to the person and implying that they don't understand humour.

I think people need to be less touchy but not in this situation. I will take responsibility if I've offended someone.

'It's just banter' is practically synonymous with 'I was only joking' and 'Where's your sense of humour' ... and are defensive responses from those who've been called out for being mean or spiteful.

You don't need to point out the bleeding obvious when *genuine* good natured banter is taking place between friends!

There's a guy who used to live in the same block of flats as me, and since he has moved up to Chesterfield we keep in touch and take the piss out of each other via texts. I think I'll have to upgrade him from Text Buddy to Banter Buddy

I think people use the word "banter" to to excuse being rude or offensive.

To me, banter is a type of jokey insult that is exchanged between people who know each other well enough to be sure that no offence will be caused... it's not an excuse for being a knob.

. very true. I think if some of the thibgs close friends and I have said to one another over the years. .. to anyone else they would be shockibg and poor taste. Within that friendship it's a source of entertainment and comradeship. Yet i think most people with emotional and social intelligence would not use the same language outside of those 'cliques'. And that's where you find the twats.
