...Up on the Downs

Just watched a programme on different crafts - found myself lusting after rag rugs in pretty colours!

I'm quite good at making things when I need to but don't do any kind of craft. ..maybe I should, it looked so therapeutic too lol!

You make anything satisfying or artistic on a regular basis?

I compose songs on my guitar. Just instrumentals.

Woodturning, is my most satisfying creative hobby. The process of turning a rough chunk of wood, into something beautiful, can be very relaxing and rewarding.

Coincidentally, this evening, I've been messaging someone, about organizing a craft-related meet.

That's more arty than crafty but very cool too!

I “make sweet love” on a regular basis and that’s satisfying

Used to love doing that, turning a bowl, or a lace bobbin. The more intricate work I found bloody annoying, but so much more rewarding afterwards.

I used to like rope work.

Not tieing people up, more the decorative style. Like making mats, coasters, turk's head and such like.

You're right it is. Last Christmas instead of putting up a tree I put nails in a triangle on the wall, wrapped the lights around, added tinsel and baubles and then made a star out of twigs I found at the local canal.

It turned out a lot better than I thought it would. And it was therapeutic, get crafty!

I can see the pleasure in wood turning, I often see nice pieces of timber that have either been cut or fallen from trees and thou valuable to Insect life etc much of it would make good objects in the right hands.

Driftwood too - rough, and yet smooth - amazing stuff, would love to be able to make something out of driftwood. Just bought some amazing bright pink feather to try to re-create a flying cat toy!

I used to restore/repair/reupholster furniture.

I used to do some really cool things with gilding etc.

It ended up turning into a business for me!

That's interesting. We're going to upcycle some stuff for our house. I really want some mirrored stuff for the bedroom and its so costly we're going to have a go...what could possibly go wrong!

I saw that restore/recycle programme for the first time the other day, where a lady finds an item being thrown away and takes it to some specialist or other for restoration or recycling - fascinating stuff, lucrative too!

I make awesome headdresses with real animal horns and birds wings etc. Plus leather work. I go through phases of creative frenzy

Ha ha. I do have three gazillion finished ones. I like quirky embroidery, out of the ordinary stuff that's used in every day situations it makes me smile when I see it.

Mine are small-scale ones made out of florists, copper and beading wire...

Yes, i like that too. I was drawn to the texture of the ragging and the colours she was using as she worked on the beach at the start of the programme! We never saw that piece and I wanted to see it finished!

Crafty stuff is fun but it can be an expensive hobby. Say I love making placemats, I only need so many in the house and it's not something I can give as a gift. So what do I do with them all?

This is a serious question. It seems a waste to spend money on materials and enjoy making stuff but then what... bearing in mind the cost of materials and time wouldn't be covered if they were sold, so selling them isn't an option.

I knit, I made myself a pair of fingerless gloves before Christmas, and I just finished a scarf for my dog.

I have a lot of other projects I've tried and failed or started but not finished

Use the placemat making skills on other things. What are your placemats made of?
