"Another side issue on this subject is why are no modern British sitcoms any good ???"

Probably because all TV companies are "risk averse" and don't nurture comedy writing teams anymore. What rubbish they do churn out is always produced in such a way that it's "acceptable" for an American audience.

Nearly all great british sitcoms of the past were a big risk when they were first aired and some certainly upset a few people. In my mind that is what sitcoms should be, something that shakes up our comfy normal life. I know it was of it's time but, "Till Death Us Do Part" is a good example of sitcom risk taking. Like it or loath it, it certainly shook things up a bit

Some of your list I agree with, C4 comedy is much better than BBC these days. However anything with Ricky Gervais is an instant no for me anyone who takes the piss out of mentally disabled people isn't funny. The only funny thing he did was chocking in the concert for Diana because he couldn't think of anything funny!

To be honest, I have never thought he actually took the piss out of disabled people - more that he is taking the piss out of people that really do, by showing how distasteful it is. It is really painful to watch some of his quite unsavoury characters, and his standup takes it a bit further.
