Hi all. Right I had my prostate out 2 weeks ago due to cancer. I'm no health care professional or a specialist but if anyone out there is facing a similar situation or is the early stages of investigation and wants someone to talk through their experience drop me a line.

Dad had prostate cancer, had radiotherapy treatment. Described it as sheer hell. Five years later still alive and well, and was having healthy sex life until mum died. Five years longer than if he'd been embarrassed about the doctor giving him the finger up the bum exam...

I keep putting it off. I know, I know. The last time I discussed it with my doc, in the absence of any symptoms we agreed neither of us wanted her finger up my arse...

"What are the symptoms? Or is it just a case of get checked?"

Normally it's a change in your peeing pattern. So having to go more regularly, especially through the night, pressure of flow of pee. If you're unsure, see your GP, they can do a simple blood test to see if there is any need for further investigations.

GPs do offer a test, if you are over 50, sometimes there are no obvious system

Well done for getting checked.

I wish you a full and speedy recovery.

Get it sorted guys. For the sake of a blood test and a finger up your bum (a few moments of being uncomfortable ) it's much better than getting cancer.

health professionals do it all the time. They are not embarrassed and neither should you be.

For me my symptoms were a big decrease in sex drive and I found myself suddenly needing a wee and leaking. A urine test is supposed to show a psa level but mine was very low and did not indicate an issue. I fought to get a referral to urology. My own gp missed it after an internal, they found it straight away.

Gosh, well done you for persevering with it, that shouldn't happen. Those PSA tests don't always give an indication, do they? ,but I suppose its better than nothing. Best wishes to you

My Dad's got it. I could of sworn they said you have it for life, there's no cure just treatment.

In Dad's case his psa level has gone from 700 to about 4, so it's as good as gone I suppose.

His bowel cancer is gone but will probably come back.

In regards to my Dad's cancer, he got diagnosed 2 years ago when he hadn't pissed for a week. They drained 5 litres out of him.

Fitted a Cathater. He has almost refused to have it removed due to the convenience of being able to just have a piss anytime, anywhere.

He's got a beautiful garden, it's his only hobby other than his telly.

I shit you not.... he's made a full garden irragation system from connecting all his used bags. He must have x50 bags all connected running through his flower beds.

He's unreal

My dad died from prostate cancer aged 61. He just felt a bit run down and thought he needed vitamins. The cancer showed up in a routine blood test done by his Dr but by this time it was well advanced. I would urge all men to get tested. It could save your life.

Last summer noticed I did not get up for a pee anymore through the night!

The message of urgency near but all disappeared. Then developed a varicose on a testicle which lead to specialist finger up rectum then blood test and another test month later and both reading high PSA. Followed by MRI scan which has spotted something and now waiting for a biopsy march being earliest appointment.

So I think this has been knawing at me silently for nearly a year.

Six months from Specialist to biopsy !!!!

I asked my doctor 18 months ago for a PSA and told we don't do that. So lay it on thick if you go to Doc.

Early presentation is a life saver.

I feel no pain my prostrate is producing carrier fluid , you would never no I have a problem. Worst case scenario Cancer best just enlarged.

Keep the pressure on Men as this cancer is now becoming the most common cancer in UK.

Best regards M

Having an MRI scan should replace the need for biopsies, 90% of biopsies are trans- perineal now with a zero chance of infection

Sorry, but this isn't quite correct. There is less chance of infection with a transperinial biopsy compared to a transrectal one and there is a move towards transperinial. A biopsy is still required, as a MRI scan can only show if something is suspicious, but won't be conclusive. The biopsy will determine if it is benign, what grade the cancer is, how aggressive it is etc.

As a coffin dodger I get an annual PSA test. Most of us will have at least an enlarged prostate anyway.

You should get the results within 2 weeks and if you don't, chase it up, refrring to 'the pathway' (the target times for investigations, reporting, tteatment, etc.). The need for a biopsy will depend on whether or not the MRI shows anything suspicious.

PSA can be elevated for various non cancer related reasons, e.g. ejaculating, cycling, vigorous exercise within 48 hours before the test, or infection. A digital rectal examination ('finger up the bum') can indicate the prostate as being enlarged, though this generally happens with age anyway.

There is loads of good information on the Prostate Cancer UK website and they have specialist nurses who you can contact for advice and are brilliant.

Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer in the UK, but one of the most treatable, especially if diagnosed early. It does not always have symptoms, but certainly get checked you have any changes in urinary habits, sexual function or if there is any family history (father, grandfather, brother, cousin). It usually affects guys 50+, (though earlier for guys of black ethnicities). You are entitled to be checked, even if asymptomatic and PCUK have advice on this if your GP is reluctant/ refuses.

Take it seriously guys and ladies look out for the men in your lives and do what you need to do for them. Stay healthy everyone!

I have lived with prostate cancer now for around 5 years. I was having regular blood tests and body scans before coronavirus came along. It has got slightly worse every year and I obviously know that in the end I will probably need some form of operation. I would recommend every male to get checked especially when your over 50.

I think it's great that so many have come forward with offers of support, who have had experience of this. I recently had my biopsy , and literally had a call half hour ago asking me to come in and view my results at the hospital... Will life ever be the same again?
