That is sad. But, what a life and look at the achievements made by a guy who was told at 23 he had two years max. Mind blowingly clever, brave, astonishing and humble. But also, bloody funny when he chose to be.

My lecturer was good friends with him, his office was next door. He once told me a story about his last public lecture to the academic world. Everyone asking questions trying to outsmart him, one person appeared to have. Then he recited a 50 digit equation of his head from scracth and started ch*king.

He died on stage but was revived and rushed to hospital. When they managed to decipher what the equation meant it essentially meant something along the lines of you haven't allowed for the possibility of god. Which was of course a joke, he had chok*d on stage and died laughing at his own joke!

That's my favourite story of Stephen but honestly what a man. Today is an incredibly sad day. We hear about celebrities passing every day but here is a man famous for quite unique things and rightly so.

We have lost a truly historical figure.

Right up there with Einstein, Newton..

He lived during our time.

Defied medical experts living years beyond his time.

And don't forget his amazing sense of humour.

A very sad day indeed.

I for one think he should have a bank holiday in his name,stamps and notes with his image on.

What a guy he was . Lived 52 years longer than doctors predicted and as someone who loves astronomy I for one am sad at his passing . He passes the mantle on to Brian Cox now . RIP.

A phenomenal intellect!

I studied Physics at Uni. Still had no idea about many of the concepts he came up with!

How much his particular circumstances contributed to his ability to put so much energy and thought into his science is difficult to judge.

But for sure a true genius. Allegedly after sitting his finals, he was only a borderline 1st / 2nd class, so had to sit a viva exam. Apparently at that point the examiners realised "they were talking to someone far cleverer than most of themselves", and awarded him a First!
