If we had a way of detecting whether someone had a high risk of committing a serious crime would we be justified in locking them up to stop them doing it?

We should find ways of correcting their behaviour or mindset to prevent them from committing crime. We can’t just lock everyone up.

Yes!! Brilliant idea!! Go one further and have their patents neutered before they’re born. Now that’s real crime prevention.

I’m only joking btw.....

I'm assuming it would be their genes that predisposed them to crime? If so, use gene therapy to fix them.

Logic says yes, but you can't criminalise someone for what they might do, only what they have done or attempted to do..

The Dutch have a very progressive approach to crime prevention. I remember a documentary I watched many years ago about the Amsterdam Police. I remember an interview with one officer who explained the new approach to tackling burglary. I quote, 'Burglary was a very big problem here but we are proud of the way we tackled it. Because since we legalised burglary it is no longer a problem'. Imagine a society where burglary is no longer a problem? I for one are not to proud to look for forward thing crime prevention methods from other nations.

Everyone has the potential to commit crime, given the right/wrong circumstances and motivation... so those jails could end up pretty full.

(But..if I end up in Wentworth with you Rubi, give me a wave across the exercise yard x )

The Chinese are currently delving into the ethical nightmare of a dystopian Minority Report style of use of technology and spying to tackle crime and/or dissident activity before it happens. Locking up people before an offence has occurred. I think the film raises the real moral and practical issues of policing pre-crime. The guilty are only guilty once something has happened. History and choices are not maid until they happen. There are many complex factors that can influence a whole multitude of outcomes upto the very last second. We must never consent as people to concept of policing pre crime. Having said that there is no harm to identifying at risk people/groups and trying to facilitate positive life outcomes. That's proactive policing.
