Social Media and the death of seduction

As a loving couple of 24 years sharing the journey through life together, I have made a few observations. Here are a few-all social media based:1. (of 100) People have lost their ability to engage in meaningful conversation. Any visit to a bar or cafe will see lots of people glued to their little screens, even using their toys as they sit with each other. Pubs were full of people chatting now it's just lol and hi. 2. We have three female friends who are drop dead gorgeous, intellectual and successful. They all want someone in their lives, they all want love. before social media there would have been a line of people waiting just to look at/ speak to/take these girls out. Sadly they are all too aware that anyone they meet is always looking for the next thing-instant gratification over all else. 3. People have become boring (controversial I know) because they have no attention span. Highly developed social skills are rare...Put the phones down and look, talk, engage...Is it possible for anyone to actually do that for a week?

I do totally agree. Conversations are dying because people would rather be poking their noses into the same recycled content on their screens. As a young man, it terrifies me to watch my neices and nephews grow to see these items as a necessity. I think I got very lucky at the time tech really became accessible, but the generation growing up now are bombarded by it.

Imo anyone with a modicum of intelligence can separate the two . I'm ( admittedly) on my phone a lot , but can also socialise when out and about. I think that's the key .

I don't agree.

Firstly they said radio would be the death of social interaction and family life, then television, then x box and play station now phones. I still see youngsters engaging with each other, they still talk to each other in actual conversations, face to face.

How many older people sit at home in the evening glued to telly not talking or sit in cafes reading newspapers not talking? Quite a few in my experience.

The older generation always thinks the younger generation is on the road to rack and ruin.

Yep. Not quite in the way it does here and not usually unsolicited. I used to wor for a publication that had a contact mag style page with P.O. box numbers. Someone in the office had the unenviable job of sorting through the mail. Some of it would be unsealed and photos would drop out and on the odd occasion other items usually "used". There's nothing new under the sun.

On the flip side I've found that interacting with people over social media has led to my soctal skills increasing.

I'm a bit more confident and chatty these days.

The world constantly evolves yet (most) people find comfort in the familiar.

I admit to being one of those people that prefer to sit with headphones on or read a book and avoid eye contact with anyone that looks like they're going to talk to me...

We're really only in the infancy of coming to terms with the huge possibilities and connective power of the internet and what it means for us all.

Taking the view that society will irrevocably damaged is a bit short sighted, I think.

I agree with some of what you say but I think lonliness is far more complex than people using social media. Aren't dating sites etc using social media as a way of initiating face to face contact? Like the personal columns used to be? They were only a few words and no photos people took the ad as a starting point.

I also disagree with the OP. The last few times I've been out to the pub and restaurants I've been struck that almost no one is on their phone and conversation has been lively. I wondered if people were hungry for real interactions and so putting their phones away for the evening.

Sorry OP but i disagree.

Social media definitely has its place.

If your experience is that its taking over thats quite sad. We still socialise, our social skills are second to none as are those of our friends both in the lifestyle and vanilla worlds.

We dont need to leave our phones at home, we are intelligent adults and perfectly capable of leaving them in our pockets until its time to call a taxi.
