"As a loving couple of 24 years sharing the journey through life together, I have made a few observations. Here are a few-all social media based:1. (of 100) People have lost their ability to engage in meaningful conversation. Any visit to a bar or cafe will see lots of people glued to their little screens, even using their toys as they sit with each other. Pubs were full of people chatting now it's just lol and hi. 2. We have three female friends who are drop dead gorgeous, intellectual and successful. They all want someone in their lives, they all want love. before social media there would have been a line of people waiting just to look at/ speak to/take these girls out. Sadly they are all too aware that anyone they meet is always looking for the next thing-instant gratification over all else. 3. People have become boring (controversial I know) because they have no attention span. Highly developed social skills are rare...Put the phones down and look, talk, engage...Is it possible for anyone to actually do that for a week? " Did you post that from a smartphone?

"When discussing a holiday with my last partner and my son and when I told them that I wouldn't take my phone away with me, they thought I was mental...wtf is that about?!? " Are you mental?! What would you do without your phone?!

"This thread is gold! Imagine sending cock pics in post Trust me, it happened. Noooooooo? Seriously? " Yep. Not quite in the way it does here and not usually unsolicited. I used to wor for a publication that had a contact mag style page with P.O. box numbers. Someone in the office had the unenviable job of sorting through the mail. Some of it would be unsealed and photos would drop out and on the odd occasion other items usually "used". There's nothing new under the sun.

"With respect, it matters not a jot that you don't agree. Check the facts. Social media has already had enormous effects on rates of anxiety disorders-have a look Cornell University's Steven Strogatz's take on it and for his brilliant succinct delivery Dr. Cal Newport TEDxTysons-a talk on what it is actually doing to the species. M xx " I will when I have a little time. It does matter a jot if I disagree. My opinion and observations are valid. Good social interaction is about respecting what other people say not dismissing it.

"Again with the utmost respect-I didn't dismiss your views, just pointed out that you are wrong; informed opinions and uninformed are all open to question. That's the fun of the human experience-I love being wrong. I love learning something new from other people or other sources. Perish the thought that I would ever treat anyone with anything less than respect. " Please collect your award afterwards.. clap everybody

" The older generation always thinks the younger generation is on the road to rack and ruin. " Exactly! The older some of us get the less we like change. The world constantly evolves yet (most) people find comfort in the familiar. I admit to being one of those people that prefer to sit with headphones on or read a book and avoid eye contact with anyone that looks like they're going to talk to me... Shocker I'm single innit This is the only social media type thingy I'm on and I don't have a TV to sit and stare at in my free time. But I rarely spend my free time engaging with people I feel like meeting someone online is the way the world is now - but maybe that's why there are so many lonely people these days. It's impossible to put your personality across with a few words and pictures.

Aren't dating sites etc using social media as a way of initiating face to face contact? Like the personal columns used to be? They were only a few words and no photos people took the ad as a starting point.

I also disagree with the OP. The last few times I've been out to the pub and restaurants I've been struck that almost no one is on their phone and conversation has been lively. I wondered if people were hungry for real interactions and so putting their phones away for the evening.

"I don't agree. Firstly they said radio would be the death of social interaction and family life, then television, then x box and play station now phones. I still see youngsters engaging with each other, they still talk to each other in actual conversations, face to face. How many older people sit at home in the evening glued to telly not talking or sit in cafes reading newspapers not talking? Quite a few in my experience. The older generation always thinks the younger generation is on the road to rack and ruin. "
