They often add something , or give an idea about the tone meant by a message .

Can be a double edged sword. May use them to try and soften malicious comments thinking they can get away with it often quoting look I was only joking can't you see the emoji

They have their place, if I'm feeling particularly lazy I'll use them instead of text.

It helps to give an indication of tone, to what can appear an otherwise cold, faceless message.

It's impossible to get across inflection in a written message. I think they provide an important function with regards to this.
