We used to play in dirt, eat dirt, catch germs & build immune systems. Faces were cleaned with spit on a tissue. Now parents are armed with wipes, antibacterial spray, gel, cleanser, suncream & a paranoia about gluten.

Better diagnosis? Never thought of that before. I always kind of thought it was recent additives or something causing allergies. I don't remember kids dying of unknown issues.

I had allergic conjunctivitis that only came up when we went to Leysdown on holiday, when I was a child. A few years ago I was taking medication that made my allergies worse. I do think our immune systems have been affected by what we eat and our environment .

My Nephew is allergic to eating shellfish ,, but from the age of 5 when he took a packed lunch to school he knew NOT to eat any other kids food ,, because he was told the truth about what would happen ,,, it didn’t stop him from trying earthworms though ,,, he’s s very healthy 18 year old now ,,, let kids be kids ,,, it’s a very very small minority that would become really poorly x

I've read that too much antibacterial stuff etc can stop kids from boosting their immune systems.

I don't remember peanut butter when I was a kid. I may have a shit memory or a crap local supermarket when growing up. Probably both.

Let a child die because it didn't know his mate's chocolate had nuts in? Would it be ok if it were your child in that minority? It's a fucking peanut ban, not taking away their civil liberties.

Actually it was awful. He used to sit on the kerb with his legs in the road playing with toy cars and a real car ran his legs over.

god knows how it happened there was only about three cars in a five mile radius.

He didn't have a lot of luck.

A boy died 03/03/17 in the Midlands from anaphylactic shock from a fish allergy. The inquiry deemed there to have been an element of neglect on the schools behalf.

There seem to be a lot more allergy sufferers around these days but it's hardly their fault. When you're talking about the chance of death we're best of being safe than sorry. I don't think it makes them softer than we were, just less fortunate.

Hey I’m going to sit happily on the fence and get splinters and say everyone is right!

Given the proliferation of allergies these days it’s absolutely right precautions are taken to protect those with them! Why risk someone’s life or well being if it can be easily prevented.

But Clem kinda has a point too - SOMETHING seems to have changed in that kids today seem to be a lot more susceptible to having allergies than before.

Yes, improved diagnosis may be one thing, but I wonder if other factors (eg. over-sanitisation maybe??) has resulted in lower tolerances on average?

Or maybe it’s as prevalent today as it’s always been but with the rise of t’internet and social media we just hear more about it?

My theory is because of all the pesticides, additives, preservatives that we use on food.....yes there might have been some allergies years ago but not as many as today because we ate meat and vegetables, the vegetables still had muck on them

there was no ready meals, snacks, crisps, chocolate and pop were a special treat, not given a few times a day

But for every child with coeliac disease, there’s another parent not giving their child gluten because they are worried about it, or it sounds healthy - and non coeliacs need gluten. Kids are getting rickets again because parents are using head to toe sunblock and a lot of allergies such as hay fever, dust & animal fur is in the increase because kids are antibac wipes within an inch of their lives. Same as the anti-vaxxers, driven by fear & going to extremes.

I think the mistake we're making is confusing the hurt of somebody no longer being here with the reality of were all born to die.

Some of us are fortunate and live longer lives while not really being deserving of it and others are unfortunate and die from short lives, however it's life, somewhere there's a very fine balance between right and wrong and were obviously pushing that balance by constantly saving people who weren't destined to live past childhood, the reality of inoculation is every single time we "cure" one thing another pops up to kill. Such is humanity that were always going to try to save what's prescious to us personally without thinking of the external consequences.

Two colleagues have young children who both have allergies to various things, milk, eggs etc and I did wonder if it was anything to do with what their mums ate when pregnant.

I also think this paranoia over germs nowadays isn’t healthy.

That was an intense read

I once babysat two brothers who were deathly allergic to absolutely everything. My presence was only required to make sure they didn't find themselves inadvertently in the vicinity of anything they were allergic to.

It was one of the scariest nights of my life. I don't know how those kids' parents deal with it. And I never babysat again.

I have a son with a severe nut allergy, School has an Epi-Pen and we have to carry one too. He had an allergic reaction to peanut butter as a toddler and had to be rushed to hospital.

Another child in his School has an allergy to egg. Also carries an epi-pen.

I’m not an anti-bacterial wipe mum. My boys are typical mucky pups (within reason!) it’s just something he’s developed. No history of it in the family, and i love peanut butter!

I have no idea why these things happen. But it’s a constant worry, because you never know how severe the next attack will be.

My ex husband has loads of allergies. His siblings have none. All brought up together, same house, same diet, same mother who smoked throughout her pregnancies.

I'm just happy that my kids haven't (so far) inherited any of his allergies (if you can even inherit them, because of that I'm not so sure).

A boy died 03/03/17 in the Midlands from anaphylactic shock from a fish allergy. The inquiry deemed there to have been an element of neglect on the schools behalf.

Why are you quoting me? I was pointing out how bloody serious allergies can be and said nothing about it being their fault.

The reason very very few people die from the common cold is because millions before you died from the common cold, did these people die in vain, no, your all living because they died and in humanity that's guilt.

I think it's life, it's good bad and the ugly, how we deal with that is important and sorrow is a human emotion of great importance to how we got here, no bird ever nests in an unsuccessful nest they move on and try try try again

We all do it occasionally! It's easy to miss interpret the sentiment behind a post and assumptions are jumped at rather quickly at times. I should have cleared it up sooner but was enjoying warming my hands on the fire. It is interesting to observe!

I have a morbid allergy to bananas - being in the same room as one will put me into a coma and if I were to eat one - then instant death.

I have to alert the crew on every flight I go on...because if someone so much as opens a banana on the flight then we have to make an emergency landing to get me to hospital .

It’s not just eating though, some people have allergic reactions to ANY contact with the things they are allergic to. They may be in a minority, but I don’t think it’s too much to ask to be sensitive to the potentially serious consequences.

I was hospitalised in the 80s after exposure to sulphur in the school lab. Still highly bloody allergic now. And I had a schoolmate who had to be kept cool in hot weather as he couldn't regulate his body temperature effectively. Sucking it up and not taking nut products to school to avoid potentially fatal consequences is a small price to pay

Allergic to strawberries here. Eat them; +39 temperature + cough + itch all over including on the inside (everywhere on the inside). All is gone half an hour later. Not life-threatening but very unpleasant. Personal beef: coffee shops that put strawberry cream all over things for decoration.

How has the OP been crass? I've read the thread again and he hasn't actually said anything bad, he just made a general comment in the OP. For all we know he could have family members with deadly allergies and he's just stirring debate.

How did you find out about your banana allergy? Do allergies get worse over time?

I can imagine some nasty type eating a banana on the flight just to be an arse, some people are like that.

It’s the second half which I find unpleasant...but, you know, each to their own way of stimulating debate. Subsequent comments by other posters are also imho insensitive...but Immaybe their lives haven’t been affected by this issue.

As I said previously, it’s a small minority that have a serious allergy with potentially life-threatening consequences. Changing our behaviour to protect these individuals is an act of kindness and collective responsibility.

Oh I do apologise I must have misinterpreted his post...he was just saying that he didn’t remember allergies being an issue rather than saying he would ignore advice etc...although it is rather ambiguous...it’s the “Yeah! Well, I fucking don’t” bit” which is a problem. It doesn’t make clear whether he doesn’t remember that being an issue (I do btw and I am of the same fine vintage) or whether he wouldn’t “fucking” follow the advice. Not keen on the aggression in that either tbh...but we all communicate in our own unique ways.

I’ve had a quick google into allergies, it’s pretty fascinating as to why and there are many theories.

Interesting to note that the massive rise in allergies has taken place in the last 20 years or so, scientists are looking at lifestyle changes, lack of Vit D in northern hemispheres has been indicated as we suffer more than our southern counterparts who are outside in the sunnier climes more. Coincides with our more indoor / sedentary / computer / games / social media way of life.

I'm knocking on a bit now and have suffered with allergies most of my life.

I remember the first time at my be 5 of 6 playing in a haystack and my eyes totally closed due to the pollen.

It went on every summer until I was around 16 then suddenly I developed bad asthma attacks after being exposed to pollen on a evening...which was Fucking scary at the time.

This went on until I was around 20 and I had a allergy skin test..then was injected with pollens over 3 years out of season.

This cured me of the chronic Hay fever and asthma but around 7 years ago I developed chronic urticuria....which is the bodies immune system attacking itself were by I came out in a complete rash over every part of my body.

This is now under control with antihistamines and stomach tablets to block the receptors....so was allergies have been about when most of you where at school.

You were just ignorant of the fact!

So the OP isn’t that far off, although of course everyone knows someone who had an allergy back then, and of course awful for those that did, but there has been an increase in prevalence since Clem’s schooldays nonetheless...and of course bad Clem for sweary delivery, but also empathy for those who suffer allergies. But also a lot of over interpreting going on.

I'm knocking on a bit now and have suffered with allergies most of my life.

I remember the first time at my be 5 of 6 playing in a haystack and my eyes totally closed due to the pollen.

It went on every summer until I was around 16 then suddenly I developed bad asthma attacks after being exposed to pollen on a evening...which was Fucking scary at the time.

This went on until I was around 20 and I had a allergy skin test..then was injected with pollens over 3 years out of season.

This is now under control with antihistamines and stomach tablets to block the receptors....so was allergies have been about when most of you where at school.

You were just ignorant of the fact!

How did you get pollen injections? I hate hay fever would love a proper treatment. "

I'm not too sure if it's still available on the NHS due to some dying after the injections....this was in the 80s.. but there are still private allergy clinics that do it.

I had to have it done due to it developing to chronic asthma on a night...I literally could hardly breath.

I remember a couple of kids as school with severe allergies ~ one was hay fever so bad his whole face used to swell up and another one who used to come out in hives, both used spend vast amount of time off school at home.

So I think of course there have always been certain allergies around, some have increased / some have lessened.

There are also allergies / intolerances we simply didn’t have or know much about ie peanut allergy / gluten ~ probably the best known in modern day aside of hayfever.

Anyways I’m rambling now as trying to type and put mascara on which those who have read another thread will know isn’t easy

You are right about expression but, I doubt Clem has been mortally wounded in fact, I'm sure he thoroughly enjoys the chaos he causes at times!

It's always interesting and wouldn't want him any other way.

It’s always interesting to see how forum famous or popular personalities can get away with stuff that other mere mortals would be absolutely flamed for isn’t it?

It was obvious that I was agreeing with the lady. I thought that after you pointed it out (thanks), she might re read it and see for herself. It was interesting when she started to tell him what she thought but I didn't want it to get too out of hand. I thought maybe she would do some flaming!

Are some people that popular or is it that some peoples intension is so transparent that most don't bother rising to it. It is always interesting when someone does though.

Like the lady miss understood my post, I think a lot miss understood the original post! The OP does always manage to word things in a way that, if not read through and thought about carefully, can seem flippant and disrespectful... hence a lot of knee jerk reactions and shooting from the hip. It does stir interesting threads though and, it's always interesting to see how people interpret things and, the reaction.

I read between the lines and my interpretation was... what is wrong with the world? Why so many people effected by allergies these days?

Clearly not how some have read it. They are making their thoughts clear based on their interpretation. Judging by some responses there is a bit of a flaming going on and, perhaps he isn't popular with everyone! So does he get away with it? I think he has broad shoulders and knows what buttons to press to get a debate or a reaction, which is why he does it. He did say he doesn't always believe what he writes but, he does get people debating.

It shouldn't ever get nasty or personal though! People should read things through a few times and have a think before they respond. That goes for all of us at times.

Well anyone that speaks against (insert any name ) is alright in my book is not an insult. Most people complaining about that have said much worse on here and called it straight talking.

Swearing at people while posting ( which happened with a few people ) is not very civil though so please, unless you are bantering with someone you know, please keep it civil or the debate goes a totally different way as expected.

Havnt there been trials of controlled exposure to peanuts in sufferers and it having good effects on the body building up a tolerance to it.

Eating local honey to expose you to local pollen for hayfever sufferers too,although i dont think that has been proven either.

I developed adult asthma and an immune condition after being a robustly healthy child and working outdoors in muck and soil my whole adult life. Im convinced its the (crappy) food we eat

Saw an interesting documentary on this a while back. They cited examples of people from certain tribes in Africa who appeared to have very few Allergies. Kids are brought up in the bush and exposed to everything from very early in life.

Modern thinking suggests that the less allergens we are exposed in the first year of life the more likely we are to show signs of allergies later in life.

As parents, when they were babies we were told to avoid giving them certain foods, peanuts, shell fish, honey...all the things people are commonly allergic to.

We had our own beliefs, so we ignored this and introduced them to these things very early on. Only the tiniest of amounts to start with. We have never had any problems apart from hay fever which is inherent. I think there is a lot in what you are saying.

I'm allergic to ginger. I like ginger but my tongue swelling is a high price for the taste.

In the old days schools prepared the meals. The person/people with allergies were catered for or they were the ones bringing in a packed lunch. They were in my school in the 70s.
