Who thinks the Oscars is rubbish?

I know I do as they always seem to pick movies, in opinion, that look boring as hell.

Don't get me wrong, there are some good entertaining movies that are nominated but only once or twice for some of the least important Oscars whereas the most important Oscars are given to the most boring movies.

I remember when Disney's Wall-e had many Oscar nominations but sadly was only given one while the rest was hoovered up by Slumdog Millionaire which was absolute crap.

I don't get some of these movies that are nominated for best film. I understand the people who made these movies worked really hard but come on, do these movies have to be so drab, boring and depressing?

Which film or films would you like to give a best picture Oscar to then, OP?

I would have given Wall-e best picture as that movie was a masterpiece compared to Slumdog Millionaire

I thought Wall-E was boring as hell but loved Slumdog Millionaire.

It’s all very subjective what films appeal to us.

It's because the Oscars are awards given by the film industry as opposed to those that consume the products of the film industry.

It's basically a massive mutual masturbation session, only with the egos of actors/directors/writers etc.

It's the film industry equivalent of other trade awards ceremonies and equally as dull. Why anyone cares what happens at them is beyond me.

There are nearly no good movies over the last couple of years so I never watch the Oscars.

Television has done well for itself.

If you haven't watch 'Utopia' - you should see it, better than anything produced in a long time but stay away if you don't like unsettling material.

I agree. It's pretentious nonesense that usually wins. Fantasy movies and comedies are notorious for hardly winning any of the big awards. I haven't bothered caring about award shows ever since Crash won best picture.

Creating a movie that will win best picture is like working from a formula: one part pretension plus two parts political statement equals best picture nomination. Ugh.

Well it won Best Animated Feature Film so it’s not without an Oscar. And you’d already mentioned it.

To have written off the entire awards I thought you’d have a torrent of films that won no Oscars that you were championing?

I did love WALL-E though. My first Fab meet (not on our first meet) cooked me dinner and made a nest for me to watch it as I’d never seen it, and sat watching me as I wept.

I know that Wall-e won best animated feature film but to me, that's more like a kiddie award.

I like to watch the Oscar nominations and winners of the Foreign Film Award. There are some crackers in there.

Aww that is lovely. I love the movie as well. I think it was brilliantly well paced and had a sweet love story between Wall-e and Eve. My favourite scene has to be when they're both flying round the ship. I think that scene accompanied with the music is the most beautiful part of the film. That scene made me fall in love with the movie when I saw it

I usually watch a bit of the Oscars though I'm usually more interested in the actresses gowns. I'm hoping that my favourite actor Gary Oldman gets an Oscar this year so will be looking out for that and hoping that Dunkirk will win something too.

Do they serve fish and chips as the award dinner?

While I don't agree with the decisions every year, it does try to focus on more serious, statement films and don't mind that. If I want to see fast and furious 8 rewarded, I'll watch the mtv movie awards.

I do think they are trying to be a bit too pc this year, 'Get Out' is not a usual best picture nominee and could that possibly be because they needed a film woth a black lead represented ?

Oscar Pistorious slipped down the list with that whole ‘murdering his girlfriend’ thing

It’s definitely one big industry circle jerk (think of it as the Hollywood equivalent of a “who’s your hottest Forumite” thread on here!) but the industry does entertain millions of people so let them have it!

Personally I’m not interested in it so avoid the media coverage of it but I don’t see the problem with an industry celebrating itself once a year.

What I do find hypocritical is the now (finally) public outrage towards some people who have abused their positions for so long yet the industry itself continue to revere alleged (M’lud!) child abusers such as Roman Polanski & Woody Allen.

I just don’t like the oscars full stop....

Half the time I think the films that are entered and win are released at certain times for an Oscar. Just feel the results are over manipulated. Much prefer award that the general movie viewing public award.

The second thing I don’t like about them is how political they have become, especially at the moment. Just feel it’s taken over and is just a bit too hypocritical with they whole way the film and Oscar world is set up.

Rant over

The oscars is a bit pretentious with all that look at how great we are but the reality is there are some amazing films made every year and why not celebrate that fact, there are many films that didn’t win or even get nominated but that’s personal and subjective, if they can afford their own little yearly blow out and exercise their free will then let them

The millions they get paid should be celebration enough.

Whatever thier motivations are, money glory or art, if they have reached the top and they choose to give themselves a pat on the back for it, then who are we to stop them, our opinions won’t grind the train to a halt, if you like movies then watch them, if you think they are rubbish then don’t

Welcome to the 'bloke down the pub thread'.

I can't remember the last timeI heardsuch a deluge of cliched bollocks before.

Don't forget to squeeze in something about footballers being overpaid pansies and modern music being shit.

FFS What is it with modern society that people gotta constantly whinge.

"I don't like the Oscars... whinge whinge whinge! I don't like the Brits.... whinge whinge whinge! I don't like F1.... whinge whinge whinge!

TOP TIP. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Just enough with constant whining.
