I park as far from anyone else that I can Usually in a place where only one side could be clunked by some idiot parking too close. Usually on end of row with no one on my drivers side.

My doors are big and heavy being an SLK and I cant open them in a normal space and get out (being rather rotund these days) I drive in reverse out or drive through to next spot ready to pull away. I avoid reversing even with sensors

not such a clear view unless roof is down.

Ok. I usually parallel park (especially since I learned how to drive in NYC). If it's a pull in spot then I pull in forwards, I don't like reversing into spots. Once the car is parked, I turn off the lights and such, turn the engine off, get out, push the mirrors in, and get on my way.

Well this is what the Highway Code says:

Rule 239

Use off-street parking areas, or bays marked out with white lines on the road as parking places, wherever possible. If you have to stop on the roadside:

- do not park facing against the traffic flow

- stop as close as you can to the side

-,do not stop too close to a vehicle displaying a Blue Badge: remember, the occupant may need more room to get in or out

- you MUST switch off the engine, headlights and fog lights

- you MUST apply the handbrake before leaving the vehicle

- you MUST ensure you do not hit anyone when you open your door. Check for cyclists or other traffic

/,it is safer for your passengers (especially children) to get out of the vehicle on the side next to the kerb

- put all valuables out of sight and make sure your vehicle is secure

- lock your vehicle.

Anything not included in the Highway Code (not just thos rule but all other associated parking rules about where you should / shouldn’t park etc) is just the manufacturers suggested advice. It might be common sense whatever this mystery ‘thing’ is but it doesn’t make it the ‘right’ thing to do!

I am intrigued though so will pop back later to see what it is!

I usually reverse into space

Handbrake on

Engine off once it's back to idle speed

Usually put it in gear to prevent it rolling anywhere

Steering lock

Check mirrors & look over shoulder before opening door

Close door & lock it (often lifting a handle to make sure it's locked)

If the car was to roll nose first down a hill, parking it in reverse would slow the momentum.

Parking rear first down a hill, 1st would in theory slow momentum too.

Because if you reverse in then you’re limited for space to get into the boot, is that not obvious?

You win the prize. The manual says that I HAVE to leave the car in gear. I've only ever done that if I'm on a hill and it's an old car.

Ah the DVSA says that it’s a “good idea” to leave the car in gear, not that you HAVE to!

given the number of handbrake failures that have happened on cars left parked over the years and the new electric handbrake systems, I'd say in gear is a good idea, personally. Or drive an auto and just put it park like wot I do

My sister suggested it's because it's such a teeny car and the wind might blow it down the road.

Can be because of a fault, or hot brakes when you stop and they cool while parked and then car starts to roll. Had one recalled for this issue a long while back. I've seen a few cars just roll off on their own over the years, thankfully they didn't hit mine when they came to a stop!

Like the idea of the wind blowing it away, could make it slide if you're parked on snow/ice tho... or someone leaning on it just for a laff

That wasn't in the manual.

I was blown down our road once, but that was in a wheelchair. Mind you, the car's not much bigger.

The brakes do get hot when you use them

Don't try testing with your fingers tho, ouchy!!! (yeah I did once)

Makes the steel discs expand and then when they cool they shrink - yeah just like us guys before someone else says it

Errr no Chuck, the engine just turns either way, the ratio of the gears stops compression of the cylinders, reverse gear tends in most cars to be the strongest, ie if it does break free reverse is the best gear to be in whether your uphill or downhill as it's the hardest to turn!.

I can see where your coming from logically speaking but they don't work like you think they work

No if there's room to drive in you just pull forward into that space once you've reversed in, reverse is always going to be easier as the steering wheels are at the back which gives you better manoeuvring than wheels at the front like when you drive in!.. It's almost impossible to drive into a tight spot that easily done in reverse

The way to park, judging from what I've seen, is to drive backwards and forwards on a diagonal, facing the other car but not quite succeeding in turning in beside it. When, after a while, one is in the parking space it's very important to leave no room at all on the driver's side to open the door, while leaving the passenger enough room to park the QE II.

I choose easy parking spots that need minimal moves and fluid makeovers, so it's slick and simple and unlikely to have damage when others move away.

Plenty of constant viewing and assessment, which may initiate indication to other road users.

I love reversing and find it simple. Most of my parking is swift and non-stop, apart from pausing for a final safety check before going into reverse and into the spot.

Obviously check for parking restrictions etc, before parking.

My car has auto park, but I am too scared to use it... van is always left in gear because I really don't trust the handbrake. Motorbikes are reversed against the kerb for quick get away.

Does your new car have an electronic handbrake? Mine does... And that scares me almost as much as the auto park... Though I obviously need to use the brake. And leave it in gear cos how can you trust something that doesn't have a rachet sound....

Depends on the space I see at 1st glance...

If I see a male struggling to get in a space , then drives off. That's the space I take and reverse into it, mainly doing so by just the use of my mirrors.

On a hill. Not only do I put car in relevant gear, apply handbrake also turn my wheels to and resting on the kerb in the appropriate direction.

I keep my foot on brake until I've taken key out of ignition, so car is at its final resting place, check that I'm happy with all controls, take seat belt off, leave car shut door fold in roadside mirror if not both then lock car with fob.

We had a hire car like that in Iceland. It was a bit freaky, especially in the snow and ice.

My new car is basic and has a reassuring ratchet sound.

I only ever leave our corsa in gear - only because I don't trust the handbrake. The clio I always take out of gear because if I forget to take it out of gear before hitting the start button I have to put it in neutral and hit the start button again twice I believe (too much faffing I want to jump in and go)
