There is a smart for four locally for a grand. Only the 1.0 engine though. It might struggle.

Kia’s or Hyundai’s are meant to be really reliable (my brother claimed when a recovery driver) but I find them uncomfortable.

I went from a C3 to a C1 - not a lot of difference in size, although the boot’s a good bit smaller. We only traded up to a C4 because my wife was pregnant and the C1 would’ve been no use for a pram.

Nothing wrong with a Skoda. I oove my Fabia, by far the best car i've owned.

When you get 56 mile to the gallon it's win win. Can drive from Oswestry to Dundee on £60 return.

Look for someone elderly Thats selling to avoid the risk of it being driven like a rally car by some kid driving mums car.

How long is piece of string? Any car that has been well maintained and serviced is what you want.Look how worn the discs are, how worn are the tyres, is the clutch ok is there any smoke coming out of the exhaust,does it have a 12month MOT without any advisories.

Ask around your family and friends as you might find something for sale where you know it's history.

Honda Toyota Mazda fiesta are "usually" pretty good but anyone of these could be a bag of shite if unloved

Just go on the autotrader app and set your search parameters. There are quite a few good, low mileage cars with full mot and service history for about a grand. You’d get a good old shap focus, up to an 05 with good history and decent spec for that kind of money. 1200 quid goes quite far nowadays.

Skoda dropped it's reputation quite some years ago and is now one of the cars of choice amongst petrol heads. Well certainly among some of the younger end, I just like to pretend I'm down with the kids.

Look for something with a 1.4ltr engine or under and avoid diesels as there'll be tax increases in the very near future.

Are all in the top list.

While its not a guarantee, I figure if people are willing to keep up servicing these older models, they are clearly worth spending on year after year so probably solid cars.

Funny that one of the most reliable cars i owned was a 12yo Xantia TD with almost 200k on it- started first time in any weather, everything worked on it, 50mpg, no rust (half the panels are plastic)- cost me £600, ran it for 3 years, sold it for £300, cost me the price of 4 tyres and the MOT's during that time- never even had a service or topped up the oil.

Had almost a dozen CitPugs, only had one that was unreliable and that was down to the dodgy dealer who got kicked off ebay following the police getting involved- sounds like the follow the herd 'don't buy french' bollocks, usually similar to the 'Apple/Andoid are bollocks' arguments spouted on that subject.

Not at all.

At 1200 the car will have lost most of its value already and probably have plenty of miles. We all know a diesel can put up over a million miles on them and petrol rarely can.

At 1200 you can buy a disel that can do 50mpg and will last another 10 years. Sure it will be worth 2p then, but who gives a shit.

Buying a brand new 50 grand diesel, now that's something you would have to think long and hard about. Hybrids are holding their value better. But I am convinced if you are buying it for yourself and plan to put 20 years on the car yourself, then diesel will be better than hybrid for now, so I'd still go for diesel.

If you want to buy new, and upgrade in 5/6 years, then go hybrid and avoid diesel.

Found it reliable only 72,000 miles on the odometer, which ain’t much for a 13 year old car.

I thoroughly recommend an aygo. I work in the community so I'm driving at least 30 miles a day without adding in my commute and I'm still only spending about £30 a week (maximum) and it's so reliable! It's 12 years old now and still running as well as ever!

Smart for two would be better. Even with a 1.0 engine they go like a bomb. Don't forget that they are mostly plastic so there is no weight in them.

Same chassis, different body panels but still good little cars.

A lot of today’s cars use this, helps keep development costs down.

We have a Smart 4 two for the office runabout, don’t know anyone that isn’t smiling when they have been out in it, great little car and a soft top to boot

£0 road tax

£180 fully comp business use insurance and £27 to fill it up.

Can’t fault it.

If it is a 10 mile commute I would go petrol. A diesel will most likely have a DPF or Diesel Particulate Filter. They are not suited to lots of short running as they need to regeneration or lean and this involves getting the equipment gone warm and driving it for about 39 minutes at constant speed and revs. I agree with the Skoda or Seat but go petrol. Good luck.

It’s not a case of follow the herd at all. My last car was a Citroen C4 1.6i petrol. It was a cracking little car when it worked, however, the electrics are very cheap and poorly designed. Warning lights would be forever putting the car into limp mode, I’d turn it off and on again and it’d be fine. Consumable parts are cheap too, I had to upgrade the starter motor, the fans stopped working which was a module in the fuse box but because of the poor design Citroen told me it needed a whole new fuse box for 300 quid. It had lots and lots of little issues due to bad electrics. It was good in terms of rust, it had none due to aluminium and plastic panels. Other than that I’d never own another French car. I have friends with them too and they have similar issues, my ex had a Citroen C5 that spent more time in the garage than on the road. They’re good for the first few years but then start to fail miserably.

Don’t worry about fuel economy because the weekly difference in spend between a car that does 50mpg and one that does 35mpg is tiny for low mileage that you’re doing.

Diesels take longer to warm up and are worth more so you often get a better car for your money if it’s petrol.

Old golf mk2 is good and hold its wings ,old diesel astra too and cheap ,total reliability is a nice Mile's yaris ..that's what I'd buy or there's the occasional lexus ls400 v8 if economy isn't a,issue.

They are totally bulletproof and I'm trade so know what's what ®

I agree with what others have said, something german or japenese and petrol unless you can get a older diesel without a DPF but then again you could be clobbered in the future with road tax and congestion charges

I actually really don't mind. Something small cheap and reliable because I begrudge having to spend a lot of money to get to and from work and school.

For ten miles I would use my bike, any car will do they're all made to survive 100,000 miles plus and motorway speeds. I sued to do 1000 miles a week in a 13 yr old Omega.

You're completely wrong! We went for a fiat panda 1.2 in the end. Only 45k miles and a service history longer than my arm. The fuel economy difference is nearly double my old car 50+mpg compared to 30mpg and although I'm filling up just as often.. every 350 miles or so, it's half the cost!

New stuff yes but I'm still in older diesels and somthing that does 20 more than a petrol equivalent from the same manufacturers is not to be sniffed at

Tried and tested and far more reliable than most out there with the added bonus of being cheap to run, insure and maintain.

Better still a Smart but good luck finding one for £1200.

A 1.0 will only struggle if it’s hilly. I’ve had a 1.0 and 1.1 fiesta and both are great. 1.0 corsa was a good runaround as well. Not really worth a bigger engine for such a short commute.

There is a smart for four locally for a grand. Only the 1.0 engine though. It might struggle. "

Depends on what the repair is. A DMF or injectors on the diesels is not cheap, but mostly good for 150k.
