Watching the new's this morning and couldnt quiet believe its been 18 years since this young man was murdered.

Listening to his mother talk about her other 2 children, and the fact my daughter pipped up with the fact he would now be 36, it made me start to reflect upon all sorts of things.

Have things improved for our young people,Also Ive been lucky with my grown children. They are all happy productive young people contributing in many ways in their communities.

How much has society missed out from this promising life, and many others, that are cut short my mindless acts of violence.

I too was shocked to hear the it was 18 years ago that this young mans life was cruelly taken.

Shame the perpetrators of the crime never came to justice

They were. But because of police corruption and institutional racism in the Met at that time the case fell apart - twice!

OK I'll rephrase it, Stephen and his family did not get justice

How the family can cope with knowing this amazes me

I don't think society has got any better for young people, especially in deprived areas, young people are still killing young people for nothing more than to wear a badge of "honour" amongst their peers

Its heartbreaking that a life seems to have no value to some people

There is to be a new court case regarding at least 2 of the men who have been charged before.

Familes cope by either fragmenting or throwing themselves into projects to help others in the name of their lost loved one. There is a foundation in Stephen's name to help other promising young people in South London.

before I answer this.. I think I better disclose that I knew stephen, and I still know the family very well...

the thing is that most of south-east london knows the 6 people who did it... up to the point where they needed to have bodyguards with them wherever they went, and they would walk around smugly thinking they were untouchable.....

I wish we would/could have seen justice finally happening.. but that ship sailed years ago with the help/incompetence of the police...

This is what ignorance and prejudice always leads to . its always futile and destructive . The police are always saying things have signficanly improved institutionally from those days . I remember thinking about that recently as they gassed me for no reason whilst walking home one night from a friends .

Total Cunts .

Well, as much as it pains me to admit it, Labour did do one thing I fully supported whilst in power and that was putting an end to the farcicle 'double jeopardy' rule that prevented the same person being tried for the same crime twice or more.

When new evidence comes to light a perp can be tried again but in reality the DPP won't bring a second case unless it is 99.9% sure it will get a conviction.

As for the killers of Stephen Lawrence, they'll get theirs sooner or later, and eventually, like rats deserting a sinking ship, they'll implicate each other and their house of cards will come tumbling down around their ears.

This is a case that will never rest until justice has been done, and rightly so.

I do think things have improved for young people in general, but it does depend on who you are in terms of ethnicity and where you live. I find it strange and not a little disturbing that after all these years of "enlightenment" we still have an ethnic devide.

I hope that Mrs Lawrence gets closure very soon. Take a minute to read this short piece on Stephen, about his family background. Even when parents appear to do everything right, life offers no guarantees..

Who knows what good he could have brought to his community...

Unfortunately I fear that the violence we see (Which is increasing all the time)is not likely to change or abate, unless society as a whole is able to take some radical steps.

Our lack of discipline in schools and at home plays a big part in this.

I have met Doreen Lawrence on a couple of ocasions, and Neville Lawrence, the more ameniable of the two once, and he was a very warm and welcoming individual. I also had the displeasure of meeting three of the people responsible for Stephens death when they use to regulary steal items from a shop I use to work in back in 1992. Ironically after we banned them from the store in question, one of them subsequently spat in my face at a bus stop and the other rode past on his bike and smacked me in the mouth. After Lawrences death, I reported this incident to the Police, as I recognised them all immediately and no record of this report was ever found anywhere later on in the subsequent investigations.

Where we stand with how safe our society is now, well that's a whole different kettle of fish.

The Lawrence case certainly played a major part in reforming the Met, but the role the Police play in how society conducts itself is actually quite small. Unfortunately we live in a culture where the rich seem to be getting richer all the time and the poor are getting constantly fucked backwards, which leads to this belief (regardless of if its true or false) that what society offers you is essentially an air of hopelessness. It's not suprising that in a recent survey done on the top ten most desirable countries to live in, the UK came LAST. Reasons cited for this were overall poor standard of living, bad job prospects, that we work you until you die for low pay and that the weather is crap (Can't do much about the last one unless you count global warming)

So it was no wonder the riots kicked off when they did, once they took hold everyone and their uncle thought they might as well 'have a go...' and that said a great deal just how disillusioned some people are at the moment with the greedy winner takes all attitude we seem to have. It's ironic that pretty much all the youth centres and youth programmes in London have now been cut, when we are suppose to be encouraging the young to take part in Sport on the lead up to the Olympics.

Ultimately all we can do at the end of the day as individuals is ask ourselves what we can do, to make to a difference to make our society safer and to encourage either our own kids or others to make the most of the opportunities they have, but when they don't have any at all left, then we are going to see some real problems.

+1

I read that by the end of this decade due to benefit reforms and the like that poor families are likely to get poorer. In some areas of Britain I don't feel it's got better and I'm glad that I no longer live in SE London so that maybe my kids will have a better chance.
