If you "inadvertently" send yourself a message, you can read it and it still shows as unread in your message notifications.

So I'm told

You can also add yourself as a friend...

I did that a while ago after reading it in someones status update..

after a few days of reading my own status updates i deleted the boring bugger from my friends list...
