Sometimes if your hair is porus (which can happen if you've dyed it previously) then it can absorb the colour more resulting in a darker colour, when dyeing at home always go a shade lighter (bit late now for this advice, sorry!)

Head and shoulders shampoo put onto dry hair and left for 45 mins or clarifying shampoo will help lighten it.

Had to do this myself a few weeks ago.
