Memories of Murder

Confession of Murder

Japan has too many to list.

From infernal affairs, to the classic horrors of ringu, and the grudge, and even stuff like cold fish.. To battle royale and everything beat takeishi does. miike does.. then off to their animations the whole of ghibili studio, to other animations like a letter to momo, or manga, or akira etc.

Then across europe you have gems, france has a bunch.

La haine, city of lost children, Amélie, taxi etc

anyway way too much, can go on and on.

Yes, it's grim, disturbing viewing and a brutal filmic journey, yet oddly surreal at the same time. A must watch. Brilliant acting from the young lead role, too.

I keep on meaning to implement a foreign movie night once a month or something. Just to force me to catch up on all these classics. It would be fun to invite a bunch of people over to watch it and discuss it over drinks after. I've done that with friends before and it was always thought provoking and fun

...and no we didn't end up fucking, before you ask

That sounds great, I’d sign up for that but too far away

My personal favourites

Kontroll (yes it’s spelt like that)

Downfall

Koyla

Cinema Paradiso

Diva

Subway (with a young Christopher Lambert and the gorgeous Isabelle Adjani)

5th Company (The Russian ‘Platoon’)

I could go on

So many great films on the thread - including faves of mine like Downfall, A_elie and Crouching Tiger.

A couple I didn't see mentioned that I also love: 'Goodbye Lenin' - one of the funniest and most poignant films I've ever seen.

And 'Neuve Reinas'. Oh, and 'Y Tu Mama Tambien' (which also featured on a 'best sex scene in film' thread too, in case of interest! )

Any mention of the French film District 13?

I thought I was going to be watching District 9 so was disappointed but kept watching and it was really good.

Who knew Paris could be such a hole? So much for romance. It's a gangster type film with all this parkour starring a parkour champion I think, and in the end the authorities decide to bomb the lot. Except the protagonist and his undercover cop friend have the codes for it.

The undercover guy is convinced the codes are to disarm the bomb, which is about to go off! But the protagonist is convinced the codes ARM the bomb. He is right, and they have a fight almost to the death.

Also, with The Raid being mentioned, how about The Raid 2? Another gangster type film which was more brutal than the first.
