Suits You Sir...

Right, looking for a bit of forum input. I’m going to a wedding in June and need to get myself a new suit as my old ones no longer fit me. I want to get a three piece, as I like the idea of being able to take off the jacket and still look suited up in the waistcoat.

However I’m struggling to decide on colour and design and then what shoes to go with. My son has got a fabulous blue Ted Baker suit with red trim, and has a nice white shirt with collar and cough trim and a tie that match the trim with Oxblood shoes. So I don’t want to look like a tramp next to him

So forumites what are your thoughts?

Master Debonair.

They're pretty cheap suits but they're great quality. They've got a bit of Paul Smith about them but not a Paul Smith price tag.

Northampton Somewhere

His outfit sounds lovely.

Next have some really nice ones with funky linings but I guess next to a Ted Baker one they might not look so good.

What about Ralph Lauren? Some of the retail outlets might have a decent one....reduced

Get yourself to Hugo Boss.

M gets all his suits from there and they always have the right effect on me. They’ll accessorise and coordinate you to perfection.

Enjoy the wedding, hope you and your son have a great time!

Blue is very much still in, as are greys. People may scoff but nip into your local M&S and speak to one of the guys in there. They tend to know their onions

I’m thinking about that. There’s a really cool tailor just up the road from me but very pricey. However I am tempted to go for something a bit different and slightly original.

Still colour and design are a conundrum

It annoys me when people buy a suit but don't get it tailored. It's such a shame.

There's a bespoke suit maker on Savile Row that do an incredible suit for 400 quid.

As well as a three piece, consider a two piece with funky but co-ordinated waistcoat. That often looks good, plus you can wear them for casual too.

A grey Prince Of Wales or Glen Plaid is perfect for summer. I’ve just been measured up for an Anthony Sinclair conduit cut (the 3 piece Sean Connery wears in Goldfinger)

If you want bespoke or made to measure in Manchester, I recommend James, just above Thomas’ Chop House

If you decide to go off the peg, take it there anyway and have it adjusted to fit. As has already been said, the fit is everything

While you’re at it, go to Frank Rostron and get a shirt made. Classic white with a mid collar and a cocktail cuff. Class

I always look great in blue. However I’ve found a brown t with a blue check running through it that looks pretty good so I’m going to have a trip to the shop to see it for real.

I’ll probably end up getting more than one as I’ve had to let go of three nice nice suits because they are two sizes too big for me now

Forget what everyone else is saying & what your son is wearing.

Whichever style & colour you go with, having it tailored with make it stunning

I always look great in blue. However I’ve found a brown t with a blue check running through it that looks pretty good so I’m going to have a trip to the shop to see it for real.

I’ll probably end up getting more than one as I’ve had to let go of three nice nice suits because they are two sizes too big for me now

Haha the site won’t let me type tw eed

That sounds fantastic! Always best to go with your gut, or lack of it...congrats go you! Hoping the weight loss is a good thing...

What shade of brown t? A crisp white shirt would look great & brown shoes darker than the t

Fs why can't we say tw e ed? !!!"

Because it has w eed in it

It sounds like a special occasion and it sounds like you would like to look and feel real spiffy. Sooooo I'd say it's time to spoil yourself with the perfect fitted suit that speaks to you. Just do it....it'll be worth every penny!

"Your sons suit sounds fantastic!

Are you bold? I think a coloured suit would be pretty awesome but definitely get it tailored!

Coloured? -what colours?

I've changed my mind. On the Master Debonair site, the Gibson London taupe muted check suit is sexy & smart. My vote is for that

That’s a really nice suit but I have no idea whether it would suit me

When you think of your dream suit, what does it look like?

I’d send a pic of it but can’t

Oh yeah I’m four stone lighter 4 inches off my waist and and my belly has shrunk so my suits look like tents. I hadn’t realised how much of my chest size was down to my belly. I’ve gone from XL to Medium "

That's amazing! I bet you feel the difference, hope you can see it in yourself too, that's the bit I could never see
