Puppy advice

Right ive never had a dog before im more of a cat person but on saturday i got myself a puppy

Hes so cute its unreal lol but thats another story

What i need is advice on leaving him alone because i havnt left the house since i had him

I bought one of them big dog cages for him to sleep in and for when i go out so that hes safe and not roaming round and hurting himself thing is i just dont have the heart to put him in it its a big cage that holds a bed, food and space to have a stroll about in but every time i put him in he just cries and i feel guilty and take him out, ive slept on the sofa every night since saturday and even cancelled a meet because of him and obviously this cant carry on as i need to go to bed and leave the house at some point

So i suppose im asking anyone who has experience with puppys what do you do?, i just feel putting him in his cage is cruel but then leaving a dog so small running about unattended could be dangerous but i cant be with him 24/7 forever

Ive put his food in the cage with the door open so he has to go in for food with the hope that he will get used to being in and out of it daily and get used to it so its not a shock when hes locked in, and to be honest hes happy in there eating, he even goes in and gets in his bed but soon as you close the door he starts crying, then i feel bad and let him out

So how do i get him used to it and stop he feeling scared when the doors closed?

Is it just a case of getting tough and leaving him to cry for a few days till he gets used to it?

My dog has one of these and was the same at first and now its his domain and wont let anyone go near it lol...perseverance is all i can say, he may look cute but they are destructive and show no mercy to shoes etc..... try leaving the radio on etc...... i bought mine a soft toy for him to cuddle up to and then destroy and that helped, and stop looking into the puppy dog eyes, you will never get anything done!!! lol

It's a dog.

It doesn't think like you and me.

It's life consists of wandering around sniffing things and trying to work out "Can I eat this?" or "Can I fuck this"

So it's pretty much like being a guy.

But without the lager.

if youve had kids then its just the same, when you have to let them go throught the night , they cry and cry, but the next night all is good.

He will have separation anxiety,he needs to get used to the cage,consider it like leaving a crying child at nursery...you know it is for the best in the long run.

Try wrapping a ticking clock in jumper which smells of you and putting this in the cage.It will reassure him.

You've gotta be cruel to be kind!

You want a well trained dog for life, not a disobedient dog who you will feel the need to send to the nearest dog rescue when it's destroyed your home!

Give it a toy (not an old slipper) and leave the radio on ( I fully reccomend radio 2)

Try and put an item of your clothing in with him, say an old worn(so it has your scent on it) t-shirt, i did that with mine and he settled ok...

You need to help him feel secure in his bed or cage.

Puppies can be quite boisterous and mischiefous so when this happens never chastise him when he goes in the cage and he will associate it with being a "safe" place.

They are clever little buggers and will soon wise up to the situation.

His own mother wouldn't be bothered about upsetting him to teach him something and you must do the same

Having been a vet nurse thats exactly the best advice I could give you. As long as they have your scent that should reduce any anxeity. Try it when your in the house for increasing periods so that he knows your always going to come back.

Leave the radio on for him, it will keep him company, the old cardigan or jumper is a good suggestion also.

But he will be stressed until it becomes part of his routine.

Putting in his cage is the kindest solution, he will totally wreck your home with the frustration of being alone and then fret at all the damage he's done. You want to be coming home to give him a big cuddle not to have to tell him off for being naughty.

Lovely, lovely dogs, and surprisingly they don't need loads of excersise. They are great at heal and are usually very mild mannered. You've got to watch them around cats though as they are natural hunters.

We've got a cross and he's an indescriminate killer of anything he can catch when he's out in the woods near where we live.

He's caught loads of rabbits, squirrels, rats, mice and birds.

He's great in the house though, you don't know he's there unless someone knocks on the door.

We took him to puppy classes when we first had him, only a couple of hours a week for 6 weeks to get a few basics like sit, down, stay, heal etc. You can do it on your own, but going to a class will help him to socialise with other dogs and people.

Our dog has learned to respond to hand signals to sit, and lie down, and will also respond at distance to shouty commands like stop, down and wait.

We got the basic training tips by going to classes. It's only about a tenner a lesson too and you'll find it's money well spent. Your puppy will enjoy it too

He dont look much like a greyhound at the mo hes dead fat lol

But he has got proper back runners legs lol

Took him for his first inection yesterday and ask the vet if he looks like a cross breed as i thought id been pulled a fast one but the vet said he should look like that as a pup got a right belly on him

Sadly, you need to leave the dog to cry for a while, otherwise you are going to have massive problems down the line.

Greyhounds are seriously sensitive and will need lots of reassuring and some really good advice already given like an item of your clothing left in the cage. What I tend to do is play with the puppy, roll about on the floor etc in an old top/clothes and then leave the top in the bed. The cage will soon be "my territory" to the pup and will feel secure in there, what you are doing by leaving the door open and putting food in there is the right thing to do.

We have had Lurchers too and have the same habits as Greyhounds and can suffer from serious separation anxiety, but you do have to be tough and all will be fine.

Another thing worth mentioning I feel is that your puppy is a "sight hound" and will see moving objects a lot quicker than us humans and has the "chase" instinct built into the little bundle of fun.

ive got 4 cats two of them will play with him the other two just think hes a waste of space i think lol but they are the eldest two so quite set in their ways where as the other two are still young, under 2 years, so they still quite playful, they love him......for now lol

I shall try a item of clothing in his bed tonight and radio 2 and see how he goes

I doubt the wee puppy will be enjoying "Who let the dogs out"...while sitting in a cage...ur so insensitive

also try putting him in during the day but leaving the cage door open while you're near it but doing other things. if he can have treat (a small kong with unsalted peanut butter in is a good one) put the treat in with him as well as the jumper others have suggested. you want him treating the cage like its his bedroom. my brothers dog will go to his when he wants to curl up or when he wants the kids to leave him be...
