A 30-year-old transgender woman has been able to breastfeed her child, the first ever case of induced lactation in a transgender woman to be documented in academic literature.

Is this a step too far? Bearing in mind the baby will be exposed to the cocktail of drugs that the woman was taking to induce milk.

Surly the baby’s needs are taken into consideration, if there’s no harm to the baby I don’t see a problem

Great news! I almost posted earlier, when I saw this. This will likely become more commonplace in future.

I would have thought the specialists would know what the drugs' effects would be on the baby.

SH - ref your concerns: all ethical considerations, with paramount emphasis upon the baby, have to be considered before medical interventions are permitted.

My Boudoir

They'd be the same concoction of drugs given to a woman whose milk doesn't come in... And therefore safe for the baby

Was the woman taking a 'cocktail' of drugs? The article refers only to her HRT regimen and a medication commonly used to treat nausea but also to promote lactation.

From that it seems unlikely that her milk would be any different to any other mother being treated for difficulty lactating while taking contraception or HRT.

I think the ethical argument has finished. What we all see from medical advances either embraces or upsets depending on personal or religious view point. So I think it's great and probably an unbelievable experience. There can be nothing except giving birth for closeness between mother and child.

It must be a wonderful experience for the individual. But to answer your question - I have no idea.

I prefer to leave judgements like that to those qualified to answer - the clinicians.

And I'm sure if they thought the child was being harmed, well, it wouldn't be in the papers, I guess.
