"I just object to a day telling me I have to be romantic and the commercialism involved. I'll do it my way thanks. No bitterness. " And what way is that? I'd take romantic commercialism over most things if it's done in a way that communicates love

"What if you don't have an other half, partner or anyone.... (not by choice)" Then you're in the same boat as me

"hmm I fail to see some of the points made. Always the same "you should do it everyday" but how many of us actually do? Yes people have cashed in on valentine's but that doesn't mean you have to adhere to what society dictates. Show love without a present or do it on a different day if it's the date what grinds your gears. We live in a capitalist and consumerist society so the gifts are to be expected right? I'm against materialism but I like having an excuse to shower someone with love. Even if the day just acts as a reminder of how you should treat your other half I still think there's more good than bad being done" Ok if not ‘everybody day’ then regularly. I get what you’re trying to say but if the only times you ‘remember’ to show affection is on landmark dates such as birthdays, Christmas and Valentine’s Day then I can see why it’s useful to have the date in the calendar. Me and my significant other have mutually agreed to send a card to each other today - and we are having a nice meal out at the weekend when we can have twice the experience for the same money! Of course we’ve wished ourselves Happy Valentine’s Day and said we love each other. But it means no more today than it did yesterday, or tomorrow!

"Are bitterballs the starter or the main course " Depends on how hungry you are. They'll be plenty to go round by the end of the eve

I didn't say the only time but they are good times that are universally known by all. I'm not gonna say I know what is best for all as your valentines sounds very organised. Agreeing in what should be done and when. I'm quite an impulsive and spontaneous guy so your day wouldn't work for me. Also I wasn't trying to quantify it. It doesn't mean any more on today's date than any other but I still think the day does more good than bad
