UK ban of porn in April.

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

So, in April the UK will change the rules on adult content online. By default adult/pornographic content will be blocked.

I realised that this may affect sites like fab and fetlife, considering their content and use. Meaning that'll be a while lot harder to login to your profile(s).

Thoughts, plans and the like on how to maintain the level of browsing you've come a custom to?

As I understand it (and it’s not something I’ve properly looked into) all sites will need to validate that it’s an adult accessing the site. So some sort of adult verification system will be needed (ID or credit card etc possibly?)

If Fab is affected it would be interesting to know what they plan to do and when as the clock is ticking!

This is probably the very first steps to ending free internet porn use in the UK, not to mention a hacker's paradise. The data they'll have on every individual and what they've clicked on will be staggering.

The thing is that this can only apply to UK hosted sites, so yes it's likely to affect here, but as most porn sites are hosted in the US and elsewhere, the UK law has no jurisdiction over them.

Whether or not they do is of no consequence, you can just type the URL in.

As usual, when the government try to regulate the internet they just reveal themselves to be clueless.

You’d have thought so, and it’s currently a UK hosted site (I think?), with lots of pornograhic content, so I would have thought it must be.

But I don’t know what the exact criteria is, whether there are exemptions etc?

The silence from the site on the issue is intriguing!

They can force the isps to block the sites, like they do with Torrent sites, if they haven't got an age verification system.

Would fab be affected though? The images are not available for non site members to view? Would the new laws just mean that in order to join you'd need age verification?

I've found out a certain problem with this ban. If this is to prevent kids from watching porn (which I don't have a problem if the ban is for that purpose), what's gonna stop one of their parents from going to a porn shop to buy a porno dvd? The kids will end up finding it anyway one way or another

This government should be shot for imposing something like this. The UK will be the most restricted country in the world.

It's for the sake of the 'children'. The internet already has adult blocking, that we're all paying for. Parents should be 100% responsible for whatever their children do online.

It's partly a funding opportunity with a range of companies in waiting, who will facilitate the age vetting. Follow the money - these people are behind the pushing of the government to do this. And UK taxpayers will be paying for this, in more ways than one.

TOR is great for certain things, but the network is nowhere near big enough to support everyone streaming pornographic video's at high bandwidth ,it's much easier to just use a paid for vpn that max's your connection speed.

After reading an article on this porn ban, I found that the age verification could apply to sites that provide porn "on a commercial basis" to people in the UK.

This could mean that it will only apply to sites that provide porn videos.

After having a think about it, I'm beginning to doubt that it will affect sex dating sites like Fab as they are members only sites. Plus non of the content is viewable to non members as the pics are blurred and they can't access all the features like webcam without joining.

There is also the fact that this site doesn't provide pornographic videos which I think is what the ban is aiming towards mostly as well other pornographic imagery.

So hopefully, Fabswingers will be safe from the ban and we can continue to socialise and have fun as normal

I can see where you are coming from on this but i'm afraid your wrong.

To join FAB, all you have to do is tick a box stating you are over 18. The legislation requires that all members have to PROVE they are over 18. Therefor the site has to come up with a method to allow that proof to be shown to the authority's should they want to look at it.

That's also a bit of a red herring as well i'm afraid. Using a VPN to look at any overseas site will be fine and will work. FAB is a UK based site, so will have to abide by UK law. VPN or no VPN, we will have to prove we are over 18 to log in on FAB. If the owners of the site want to move it overseas, then we can all VPN in as much as we do now.

As a mummy i have to say that I’m pleased there is going to be a bit more responsibility about what’s available online.

Too many teens think porn is what we all want. And that’s not the case. It’s their first view of sex. I love rough dom/sub sex, but I wouldn’t want my daughter to have this as her first view and idea of sex!

Although it would be better to see child sex rings caught and imprisoned.... and the dark web deleted.... but one step at a time I guess.

If we need to provide better ID, like a copy of your passport or credit card, it will make viewing more responsible. That’s my hope anyway.... and trust me I’m no prude. But I do think the world is going slowly mad!

But why should all adults have to have imposed costs and inconveniences upon them, when we already have web access for children that's different to adults: that again, we have all paid for? And when as parents we can ensure that our children have their use appropriately managed?

This is being done because some companies wish to make money out of UK citizens - not to mention the huge volume of data that will be compiled, that could end up in anyone's hands in the future. And the right wing parties always talk about disliking the nanny state - until their friends are able to use it as a tool for making even more money.

Most pedo's don't have the intelligence to be able to use the dark web, as indeed most people in general don't either. You can't just do a google search on the dark web and land on some nasty website you know. You have to know the exact IP address of the site you want to go to..............these are not advertised.

As the dark web was thought up and propagated by the CIA it will never be "deleted" because it can't be and nothing will be done about it until the CIA itself comes under threat from it.

All the tools to stop kids looking at porn already exist on every computer, phone, tablet and router that are sold. It's parents responsibility to make shure they educate themselves to use those tools. At the moment, most parents can't be arsed to do that.................so that's why we have this legislation.

It’s hard when kids have access to their parents’ phones and tablets where they could then link to more adult content.

I just don’t want it all over the Internet. I think it causes problems for some people.

Don’t think I ever watched porn until my late 30s, had no need to.

But I do think it’s important to provide as many boundaries as possible. Because the more savvy kids become, the easier it is to circumnavigate the www

Most pedo's don't have the intelligence to be able to use the dark web, as indeed most people in general don't either. You can't just do a google search on the dark web and land on some nasty website you know. You have to know the exact IP address of the site you want to go to..............these are not advertised.

Actually over 80 per cent of the dark web is used for paedophilia!

"Actually over 80 per cent of the dark web is used for paedophilia! "

Did you get that from the daily mail

The dark web was invented to allow dissidents from various country's to talk to each other because there own governments were censoring the normal web. It's also a method that allows security agencies to monitor normal web traffic without using VPN's, in other words they can monitor terrorists in real time. It's also used by multinational company's, banks and governments to pass sensitive information with no chance of interception by hackers. The statement of 80 percent pedo use is far fetched and is typical of a newspaper looking for headlines.

"So, in April the UK will change the rules on adult content online. By default adult/pornographic content will be blocked.

I realised that this may affect sites like fab and fetlife, considering their content and use. Meaning that'll be a while lot harder to login to your profile(s).

Thoughts, plans and the like on how to maintain the level of browsing you've come a custom to?

Very simple to get around. Make a note of this.

Download the "Tor project" for windows. It's Free and Take about 30 seconds to install.

Its a anonymiser that hides your IP address and your ISP cannot control. This will give you a Firefox type browser that you can go to where you want.

If you look at the bottom of your browser it'll tell you your in some other country ( obviously you're not )

This project is used for people on both the Dark web AND people in countries where you need to hide what you are surfing in case the Gov't come knocking at your down.

Problem solved. "

Can I use this for downloading on PB? At the mo it's not letting me and insisting I use their paid for vpn. Tried a free proxy but it didn't work and still wanted me to pay for vpn

Can you tell me what the other 20 percent of sites are then?

Just make it up if you want to like with the made up 80%.

Even face book has a onion address.

"As I understand it (and it’s not something I’ve properly looked into) all sites will need to validate that it’s an adult accessing the site. So some sort of adult verification system will be needed (ID or credit card etc possibly?)

If Fab is affected it would be interesting to know what they plan to do and when as the clock is ticking!

Surely Fab must know if they're going to be affected by now

You’d have thought so, and it’s currently a UK hosted site (I think?), with lots of pornograhic content, so I would have thought it must be.

But I don’t know what the exact criteria is, whether there are exemptions etc?

The silence from the site on the issue is intriguing!

Would fab be affected though? The images are not available for non site members to view? Would the new laws just mean that in order to join you'd need age verification?"

Actually they are if you don't change your settings on fab.

The UK citizens are responsible for and will be paying for this for years to come.

Absolutely not necessary in the slightest. Why should all citizens pay for the inability of parents to do their parenting role? UK citizens are already paying for the system that imposes age restrictions on your internet access.

That's also a bit of a red herring as well i'm afraid. Using a VPN to look at any overseas site will be fine and will work. FAB is a UK based site, so will have to abide by UK law. VPN or no VPN, we will have to prove we are over 18 to log in on FAB. If the owners of the site want to move it overseas, then we can all VPN in as much as we do now."

Fab doesn't allow me to sign on when I'm using my VPN (and I have a pretty good one - even gets around Netflix' block).

"I've found out a certain problem with this ban. If this is to prevent kids from watching porn (which I don't have a problem if the ban is for that purpose), what's gonna stop one of their parents from going to a porn shop to buy a porno dvd? The kids will end up finding it anyway one way or another"

Given that most kids are far more tech savvy than most adults then any steps put in place by authorities will end up blocking most adults and be got around in 10 seconds flat by most kids.....counter productive if it’s likely to be typical of most government cock ups...

Yeah I guess so. It's just this site has helped me make so many friends and helped me get into the social pipeline but what had me worried when I first heard about this legislation was that I would lose contact with my friends and I wouldn't be able sort out when to go to the club which would then destroy my social life if Fab gets affected.

I think Fab and Fetlife may produce a loophole in the system because technically neither site post pornography. They are an adult social media hub whose patrons are able to post pictures on the site, they don't own or control that content.

By definition: pornography

printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate sexual excitement.

These photos are not intended to stimulate sexual excitement but more like self promotion. So unlike NN they're are no tribute photos on here.

Plus streaming services like netflix and amazon prime have erotic content that fits that definition.

So it's not that simple.

And i wouldn't think it would be too bad, people always find ways man. Besides, I reckon it's a storm in a teacup anyhow, you may in the future need to prove your age but fab will still be about i think.

I'm pretty sure it's near impossible to be cut off from social contact these days if you don't want to be anyhow so either way

Yeah. I doubt that Fab would just shut down because of the legislation. Perhaps the legislation won't be as bad it is thought to be.

Before I joined Fab, I only ever had the one friend who I hanged out but when she broke my heart two Christmases ago, I felt really depressed as I was alone with no friends to hang out with. That was when I had to join Fab in order to find some new friends to hang out with and have good social life and I am happy to have achieved those goals.

I am glad to have made many friends who have helped me rebuild my confidence and make me a happier man than I ever have been before. If it weren't for them, I probably wouldn't be alive today right now.

The blocking will only haapen if BBFC decides a site is not verifying adults. Also sites even if complying have extreme porn which includes fisting, squirting, watersports its a block too.

So sites are likely to have UK content filtering even once signed up. Think 18/R18 level only.

Totally non commercial is exempt, but the extreme part applies.

Interestingly I wonder how many on here consider Fab a porn site?

I don’t x

Yes it has some images of consenting adults who have posted images of themselves having sex

But I’d say the content on here is no stronger than on some of the dating apps x

There is no video content

Many are on the site for the forum

In fact I’d say the site would improve if you were required to register a credit card x

The Government is saying these new measures are to protect the kids from the harm of internet porn. That's fair enough, nobody will argue with that. But when it comes to such things the kids are often much more savvy than us adults. So the new restrictions simply won't work as proxies, mirrors and VPN's will just allow easy access to porn sites just as they do with torrent sites.

We're also wondering if, as with so many new laws made and passed by the Government, those at the top will be excluded from these new measures. After all, how else will they be able to watch porn while we're paying them to sit in Parliament?
