I've just been told I've got a vitamin D deficiency.

Anyone have any experience with this? Is it serious? Should I be worried?

I had extremly low levels of vit D and was put on a high daily dose of it. I have always eaten foods with vit D in and also spend lots of time outside so it seems odd that my levels were so low. I was told that the low levels were the cause of my frequent infections, tiredness and aching body. I need to book in to have a repeat blood test to see what the levels are like now. Doc wasnt able to give me any idea as to why i had such low levels.

"Drink lots of milk!"

Depending on the type of milk, I’d need to drink between 160 and 320 pints a week for that to be of any use

Very, very common in the uk and places with weather like ours. Doctor will give you a once a week tablet that just isn't enough to raise the levels. I'll send you a pm with a book from Amazon, it's brilliant! I get my vitamin d from Amazon too. I stopped getting the useless dosage from my gp, yet it's now in the normal range, but they've not wondered how lol

It's funny you mention this. I was reading on the NHS site last night that everyone over five should be taking 5mcg of vitamin d a day.

I don't think you need to worry, just keep taking the tablets

Yes. Take the supplements as well as increasing your exposure (safely) to sunlight and through food sources.

Vitamin D deficiency can cause so many things from tiredness to bone loss. You can't maximise calcium without it so if you want to keep your teeth, hair and bones take the supplements.

I had real problems with my depression due to a deficiency, now on supplements its still a problem, but more manageable.

I recommend getting out and about more too, not just for Vit D but also serotonin production.

Durham Tees

A friend of mine had extremely low vit D levels and was taking supplements. However, she continued to feel unwell and further tests have discovered she is producing massive quantities of calcium. It now appears to be a problem with the parathyroid gland, which regulates calcium production. Likely to have a scan to check which of the 4 glands is the problem and removal will hopefully resolve the problem.

So if anyone is being given vit D deficiency related blood tests, ask them if your calcium levels are normal.

Funny you should say that. I've just had shoulder decompression surgery to remove excess calcium on the tendons

The vast majority of humans in the northern hemisphere are D deficient.

Sun alone won’t do anything, you need supplementation of aprox 5-10,000 iu a day. YouTube Iver Cummings and Vit D and have a look at the vit D council.
