Remember how up until I'd say the late 80s , mid 90s times, America looked like THE place to be ? Glamorous, a big adventure, the actual land of opportunity. Everything about it was larger than life and appealing, from Dallas to Disneyland, it really appeared to be the country that could talk the talk and walk the walk.

Question: given it's more recent history, how do you see the good ole U S of A ? Would you even now consider it a place you'd wish to visit ?

I went for a couple of months back in '86, always said I'd like to return and do Route 66 on a motorbike. Don't think I'd consider living there though

It's a massively diverse and beautiful country.

Focus in the negative media spin and pretty much everywhere is grim. Let's face it if we read newspapers the UK is pretty awful these days !

I would love to go , the pacific coast looks lovely maybe play some golf at pebble beach.

Only thing that puts me off is the guns, they see life as cheap in my opinion

Recently watched worlds greatest motorcycle rides with Henry Cole. It's looking increasingly difficult to find original sections of Route 66. Although historically significant and something I'd like to do, America as a whole, I can take or leave. I won't be upset if I never make it.

I'm rather liking how this is going, its pleasant that no one has let the country's current commander in chief sully their view . Didn't want this to become yet another Trump bashing thread, even though i cant be doing with him,that stuff has been repeated ad nauseum .

We visit at least once a year and love it there, we have got an open opportunity to move there if we’d like but there is too much family stuff going on at home to pack up and leave but if the circumstances were right I would go tomorrow.

Been many times and to many different states, including those most wouldn't think of visiting. In all those times I've never had a bad experience, for every right wing nut case there are 100k genuinely nice people just getting on with life. When I go I try to stay clear of hotels and food chains and use privately owned businesses

I was born there and have alot of family there too but I would never want to live there, for me, a holiday is not that appealing either, I would only want to go and see some, definitely not all, of my family

I had a few lovely holidays with family that had a place out in Florida. But the barely concealed racism out there was really a uncomfortable vibe for me. The last trip was also at the height of the election race between Trump and Clinton and made me realise just how nuts it can be out there

I've visited quite a few places in the USA, my favourite places being San Francisco and the Cape Cod areas.

As previous posters have said, it's a very diverse place, a very patriotic Country and it still holds a lot of places i would still like to visit. The only thing stopping me is lack of money, and the lack of leg room on the flights.

Exactly!

We've visited some of the big southern cities and noticed the obvious racial tensions there. But it's nothing that we've not seen before in UK cities.

Bush II split America and killed the dream. Introduced draconian powers and created a fearful population. Trump just makes it worse although he's no concept of what he's doing, other than being his spoiled childish self. Miss the optimistic and enthusiastic America of Reagan and Clinton.

After living in the UK for a few years we've decided that we want to be back home in the U.S. For a while we thought we might like to stay here, but due to various factors, we decided that there really isn't any place we'd like to live so much as the U.S. (except maybe Paris

Politics changes, so I think its a bit silly to make decisions like that based on any one administration. Wealth inequality is a damn big problem, that is inescapable. But even after all things have been considered, we've personally made a conscious decision that we'd still like to live in the U.S.

My brother has lived in Indiana and Arizona ,I have friends in Ohio and Pennsylvania so I've been many times so much to see ,Florida when kids were young

Definitely not. My decision based on how America is arguing with North Korea. NK may well be wiped off the map if it tries anything but all it takes is 1 missile to get through Americas defence and quite a lot of people will disappear in an instant.

I find Trump too unhinged and too unpredictable.

When he's gone I'll have a rethink.

I go a lot for work - minimum 4 times a year, and spend on average 6 to 8 weeks there each year in total, for the last 10 years. I think there are places I wouldn't want to live, but it's like anything - depends on the situation. Would I choose to live in LA? Heck no. Double my pay to do so? Where do I sign?

There are definitely places I could see us at least living for a year - like Santa Barbara or Austin in particular.

I spend a bit of time every year there and on the whole I still love it. There's bad and good.

However over recent years I have noticed the infrastructure hasn't been looked after, things like road systems are in really bad condition and this is in the wealthier states.

Feels like the last days of the Roman Empire crumbling from within in parts.

It's still on my list of places to visit always wanted to ride a Harley from east to west coast

but so many other places to visit first with more appeal

I've done most of Asia going to do south America next I hope I prefer places with ancient history and completely different cultures

So will probably run out of time before I make it over there

It's such a country of opposites. It's got lovely landscapes and lots of fun things to do, then you have barren areas of mining and oil drilling. The richest of the rich and ghettos in every city. The of course the worst thing of all, their president. It's a place I'd like to holiday to every now and then, but I couldn't live there

I (Mr) just came back last week from a solo trip to LA. I did the whole movie studio tour thing and was blown away!

Our family love America and have another few trips planned to explore as much of it as possible to visit the amazing things there.
