New telly..old eyes

Right so, recently bought a bigassed ultra hd telly,oooh it looks impressive !! Sleek, stylish and flatter than the proverbial pancake...and..i hate it !

It doesn't turn on..it " initialises".. initialisation apparently takes 30 seconds longer than turning on. What i dislike most though? The picture ! I can kinda understand marketing this thing to folk who want the " being there" feeling while watching sports or documentaries, but have you tried watching a movie on these fucking things ? Everything looks slightly 'off', its as if there's actually too much detail, its too vivid ! Older televisions had a softness to their images, this new thing ? Everything has a super defined edge, its rather jarring. Watch Star Wars on this thing and Wallop ! Ultra enhanced Chewbacca ball hair in new incredovision, watch Speed and you get a fine view of the bus's chassis number, watch Pride & Prejudice and you can still see the silkworm footprints on the costumes. Point is, i don't want my movie dreamland experience turned into something that apparently now looks so far beyond real that it looks, unreal ??

I dont need such stark contrast between actors and background..its front row seats at the theatre and drags me out of any immersion.

Im not a technophobe by any means, but this shit just looks 'fake'

Anybody else finding the reality tv a bit too real ?

I agree that going from a 'normal' HD tv to a 4K does take a bit of getting used to. You do need to calibrate your tv for the environment though. You'll find there's a multitude of different settings. Take a look at AV forums - there's some great guides to setting up a 4K tv on their forums.

You will get used to the picture though.

Not sure if this would work for you with your uber ultra hi tech thingy but when certain actors or tv folk appear on my HD screen that i really dont need to see their features quite so clearly I just pop my specs off and voila they're all lovely and soft focussed again!

Oh ive piddled through the manual and been on the mandatory 6 week correspondence course etc, i think its just the unsubtle change, which, as you say, you get used to. Time will tell

Use the settings on it. Adjust it to how you like to view. Everyone thinks it's just a case of take it out of the box and it's perfect viewing. You still need to adjust things to get it how you like it.

I cant even find my specs lol..maybe if they were in mega hd ..then theyd stick out like a sore thumb and then i wouldn't have to squint while reading this ! Christ, sorry..im in a quandry this morning lol

If anything i think it may be the resolution thats throwing me off, even on my pc or laptop i don't tend to go over 1920x1080..my new oh so smart tv doesnt accommodate a setting for that unfortunately lol. Thanks for your post

Check to see if the settings has a picture sharpening option; they often do and is switched on by default, and to my eyes looks bloody awful in much the same way you describe.

I don't have one but am avoiding smart TV as there's too much to go wrong.

They do have lots of flexibility and not much is yet made in k, so it's adjusting to buggery for the rest.

If you have a Greenhouse, you could perhaps site it in there and watch through misted glass and with some distance.

I didn't like mine for about 2 days after I got it. Everything was too sharp, too much detail which spoiled GOT which I was re watching, as the CGI stood out more. Obviously I knew that dragons aren't real (sorry should have put up a spoiler alert) but where my old HD tv softened the CGI, the new UHD TV made it more noticeable. But I got used to it, fiddled with the settings until it looked right to me.

I did enjoy watching Guardians of the Galaxy in 3D on it though

The majority of material you are watching is likely to be upscaled HD and that process can do weird things to digital source material. There may well be a setting in TV menu to turn this off, if so try it.

Totally, my friends got a 4k TV and it was like having extra people sat in the living room and not in a good way. I never minded porn on VHS until we got HD and I'm reluctant to watch porn in 4k least i have to throw out all my HD porn because i can't see the individual eye lashes of the girls.
