Whatever happened to "original" movies? Is it just me or are they starting to die out?

What I mean is that most movies today seem to be either a sequel, prequel, remake or reboot or is based off a comic book, video game, novel or a true story/event.

I'm not saying these types of movies are bad and I know that movies made from original ideas are still being made but I can't but feel like "original" movies seem to be growing less each year.

Am I the only one that thinks this?

Nothing made today will ever come close to the old classics.

I agree. Sometimes when I see a trailer for a movie that looks awful, I just ask myself, why is this movie even made?

Like that stupid sequel to that crappy Mamma Mia movie for example. It has no purpose of being made. It looks like it will rehash the first movie and have the same bloody songs in it.

it’s pretty clear that ideas have run dry in Hollywood, factual films are still coming through and they’re the ones that do catch my eye, The Help, Hidden Figures, these two movies totally surprised me, and have watched them many times now, also movies based on novels, Spielberg’s Ready Player One is out this year, and that a total immersion into 80s pop culture in the cyber world, from the trailers it looks bloody awesome and I will be going the flicks to watch it.

House of Mouse just seem to be flooding the cinemas with star wars, and as a massive fan of the original trilogy, the spin offs they’re churning out don’t interest me at all. other than that they’re just working on making live action movies of their old cartoons, indeed they certainly have lost their creativity there.

It's not the case that ideas have run dry in Hollywood, it's the case that studios won't take a chance with new stuff as they know sequels and rehashes have a built in audience and are less risky.

Not always a bad thing though, when you consider blade runner 2049. Which was fab.

Netflix also seem to be open to making original stuff which is good.

Its true, risk free is the current state of play. Stuff like superhero movies and sci fi tend to do the money when the worlds looking a bit wanky ( wars, economy, etc ), so studios know escapism sells.

Diz-nee have gone well down the swanny lately. All they're churning out is live action remakes of all their classic animations

Yeah that is true. The remake of Beauty and the Beast was awful along with other movies like Maleficent from 2014. I think Maleficent was an insult to the fans who loved the original Sleeping Beauty. How could they take one of my favourite Disney villains of all time and make them a hero? I loved the character in the original because she was pure evil and for someone pure evil to be made into the hero in the remake is a stupid idea.

Movies today are increasingly produced to spreadsheets and marketing. They are less about stories, ideas and art, and more about making sure they tick boxes of 'audience research'.

Very true but there should be a good balance otherwise they could end up making a movie that may look good on paper but turns out to be awful on screen
