Music bands that turned to shit

They change styles, they try to keep with the times. It all goes horribly wrong.

When Jefferson Airplane became Jefferson Starship immediately springs to mind. Any others?

Kings Of Leon, started out as a good band with their early stuff, then they were obviously moulded into what their record label wanted them to by the time that awful "sex on fire" came out and they've been a crap radio friendly commercial band since.

Jesus Jones. Amazing first album (liquidizer), but it didn't bring them any chart success. Their second album (Doubt) was utter shite. Commercialised chart fodder which, to me (M) was unlistenable.

Thankfully they ditched the commercial crap with their third album (Perverse) and went back to their own style of music.

There and to the left a bit

Coldplay - first two, possibly three, albums are great but they've just become U2 lite these days and quite dull with it.

UB40 - putting aside the two different versions of the band - once they went reggaeoke with the whole Labour Of Love thing (first two were good but got a bit tired after that) they got progressively worse.

Far too many of them drag things out with mediocre music for far too long.

They should quit while they are at the top, just like St Winifred's School Choir did after they smashed it with 'There's No One Quite Like Grandma'

Agree with many on here too, green Day, coldplay, arctic monkeys, kings of Leon for definite. Oasis, although I do have a soft spot for the third album, then it's shite. Let's add in Kayne west, jay z.

When profile and popularity supersede creation and individualism, then invariably it's the beginning of the end for most bands/artists.

Once the big record companies get a hold of you, all they are interested in is a relatively quick return on their investment whilst your popularity is still tangible.

Dilute the quality but produce more, and quicker, until the output is barely recognisable to what got them there on the first place.

End result, most bands or artists fade to grey. Only the true musical integrals remain on the path of credibility.

There and to the left a bit

Not sure I'd agree about Green Day - they've developed and perhaps become a bit more mainstream over the years for sure but thought Revolution Radio was a good album and they were easily one of the best live bands I've ever seen when I saw them in Hyde Park last year.

Oasis were good for two and a half albums and the odd single after that (Importance Of Being Idle is a classic) but mostly crawled up their own arses too much.

nearly every band that has had any kinda of success...1st and 2nd albums are awesome (oasis is the perfect example..most of the 1st 2 albums were written before they were signed) then they get lots of money and the hunger goes away..there are a few that break this mould but not many..plus lots of industry folk constantly telling you,you are great..you will start to believe it..

being rich and having an inflated ego is not a good starting point to write good music.. just my two cents

i’d say there albums can be hit and miss

their last album ain’t great at all but the songs of innocence album is quite good.

i’d say their best albums are:-

Boy

Unforgettable Fire

the Joshua Tree

Achtung Baby

All that you can’t leave behind

How to dismantle an atomic bomb

after that is pretty much mediocre

of course this is just my opinion, others will disagree, but i still think they are the best at doing live shows even today.

Absolutely agree, love everything up to Day At The Races, then they became a Pop Group in my opinion.

Also say Def Leppard, anything after Hysteria doesn’t do it for me.

As for The Darkness, they started off Sh*t, and went downhill at a remarkable rate!

"Oasis; great first album and ok second one, everything after has been awful.

I discovered the answer to this riddle recently when I watched an interview with Noel Gallagher. Basically, he'd written nearly all of Oasis' output before they had made any albums, and (to paraphrase him) he put the best ones on "Definitely Maybe", The next best on "What's the Story?" etc....

I like almost anything that Billy Corgan touches. His output is incredibly prolific, and I think in a '90s world led by record sales, we wouldn't have got to hear it all, but since now, he makes albums and offers them as free downloads, I can forgive him some "samey" tracks.

My favourite Pumpkins songs have nearly always been b-sides.
