Anyone else getting a bit down because it's coming close to Valentine's day? I know it's just like a normal day but this year weirdly enough I get a bit fed up of having noone to bring me flowers or even sex all day. Haha

I think Valentines can be a horrible time for single people, having to deal with all us loved up couples.

Maybe there needs to be a day celebrating the joys of singledom.

It can be a hard time for people in relationships too! Competitive couples going OTT for one day, making others feel insignificant.

Couples struggling with their relationship who feel the lack of romance or affection.

It's a shit Hallmark day all round!!

I just have a problem with crap like valentines day really..nothing to do with being single, I just hate commercialism! And sheeple... plus I would rather get nothing on that day from a person that shows me he loves me all the time than something from someone that only shows me once a year

It never bothers me. Even though I seem to be permanently single. I find it all a bit blah.

I prefer flowers given to me spontaneously. And not red ones.

But if Valentine's Day warms your heart then that's lovely.

I never really understood the emphasis on Valentine's Day anyway. I mean, its nice and all, but that's all it really is - nice. We actively avoid things on that day as the prices are always jacked up.

It's half term so I'll be working my arse off. However I plan to be going out with my single best friend and her daughter for a meal on Valentines Day as we've been best friends for 17 years, and our friendship has truly out lasted any romantic relationship either of us have ever had.

I quite like Valentine's day. It's never been a big romantic thing for me, and I really love the fact there are always nibbly food and lingerie bargains to be picked up the day after as a result of enforced romanticism in every retail outlet going. Plus, I get free reign to write bad poetry for a day if I feel so inclined. What's not to like?

I've never bought the valentine's day thing, just a chance for retailers to line their pockets even more thickly since the price of everything rockets

Also, if a partner relies on 14th Feb to show you they "love you" they clearly don't all that much actually do they??

Fact of life at some point in the year some people will "begrudge" what others have.

If you don't have family it's Christmas and Easter. If you don't have friends it's New Year. If you're childless it's Mother's/Father's day, if single Valentine's day.

There will always be situations others are experiencing you wish you could too: human nature.

My other half will buy me flowers, chocolate on the 7th or thereabouts as it's cheaper. He'll take me to dinner this week because of the price difference.

Being Dutch he'll probably want me to go Dutch too!

Being partnered up not always what it's cracked up to be!

Top tip for Valentine’s Day for couples:

Thinking of going for a nice romantic meal or buying a nice bunch of flowers for your loved one?

Mutually agree to do that THE FOLLOWING WEEK so that you can have exactly the same meal / flowers for half the price. Then use the money you’ve saved for other things!

Valentines Day is just a huge commercial rip off - don’t get suckered in to it. Real partners will know you love them exactly the same

I remember my ex husband getting very upset when I left him at home and spent our first valentines as a married couple watching Fulham vs Notts County in the FA cup 5th round. Good thing it didn’t go to a replay as that was scheduled to take place on our first wedding anniversary

He was one for huge, ridiculous overblown gestures. Whereas I prefer the sweet little things that show how much you care every day.

Ah right... So basically just another polarity thread where the same few people get smoke blown up their arses?

I was thinking something a little less 'look at me' and more in keeping with the true sentiment of the day.... A thread where singles say they're in.... and if people want to match up they can mail privately and take it from there.... No public pronouncements... Just 2 people making the most of what might otherwise be a lonely day without the need to shove it down everyone else's throat

You could also go to cinema the following day or the day before, the following month etc.

Valentine day and the notion of it is pointless. Any woman speaking from my point of view as a guy that wants me to do something special for a specific day is out of her mind.

where is the surprise element what happen if I suddenly want to do something special in march do I wait until the following year Feb 14.
