Because they can. Taking a break, don't want to leave the site but not wanting contact from others.

It stops new messages coming in, that's why I hide now and again if I need to catch up on replies.

Some do it when they're not meeting or taking a break but don't want to leave altogether.

I can understand those reasons but why send winks/friend requests or fab pics when you're profile is hidden?
