Six game ban for spitting

A west ham player got banned for 6 games today for spitting on an opponent. As disgusting as it is to spit on someone does it deserve a longer ban than a leg breaking tackle or elbowing in the face. I know which one I'd rather be on the receiving end of when I played the game. What's your thoughts fabbers

Somewhere In The Ether…

Ronaldo only served a five game ban for shoving the ref - but obviously he is above the sport

Any deliberate act such as spitting and elbowing in the face deserves lengthy bans in my opinion , leg crunching tackles aren’t always deliberate and arise from heat of the moment behaviour which is only natural in a game you’re trying to win , maybe during the ban they should be sent on behavioural therapy

Yes it should get a longer ban, it's absolutely disgusting to spit at people. Footballers get paid a huge wage and should set an better example to others. XXX

I am a West Ham fan and he should be banned ,at least it shows if you get caught spitting you are gonna get a lengthy ban . But deliberate acts of reckless and dangerous tackles should certainly carry heavier bans .

Why does spitting deserve the same length of ban as deliberately elbowing someone in the face? Spitting doesn't hurt in the slightest and won't cause an opponent to miss any games whereas an elbow to the face can cause lots of damage and leave the opponent out the game for months

6 games should be ok in this instance, perhaps some community work aswell. It's not something we want our youngsters looking up to and feeling is acceptable.

I don't understand why players spit on the floor either? I've never felt the need and have played sport since I was 14. It might happen in rugby but I don't see it elsewhere in other sports.

If it was at Christmas he'd be out for three weeks but I suppose it's about 5 weeks now, the whole of February perhaps.

It's hard to judge on the word 'deliberate' only the player himself knows; in a lot of cases

It’s disgusting , and a different form of assault!

I'd rather be spat on than get my leg broke or my face smashed in by a wayward elbow

This is a story that happened a few years back at 5 a side. My mate got done by a nasty tackle. I thought if the other player has the ball and I can get it I will leave my foot in on the player.

Anyway I so did. It wasn’t a bad tackle but it was a bit of revenge. Anyway the guy turned around and spat at me, at which point it became a shoving match as I went ape shit at being spat at

Football is a physical game, and feet do get left in but to be spat at is disgusting

Yes it's a disgusting vile thing to do but I don't think that alone warrants such a lengthy ban

I have to agree, it's a bit OTT. Far worse with shorter bans.

True but it won't end your career or cause you to take time off work if you're an amateur either

Spitting is disgusting - spit contains germs and virus's - including hepatitis and many other diseases - there is no excuse for it - I agree, there should be a longer ban

Spitting is disgusting and the ban is fair however for elbows and leg breaking challenges the bans should be tripled and players should have to pay for rehabilitation of injuries they cause and should not be paid until their ban is served. Too many useless thugs in sport

Interestingly French rugby union player Mathieu Bastareaud was given only a three week ban after his homophobic comment to another player.

It is also classed as common assault, therefore, illegal.
