What’s your favourite breed of dog?

I recently lost my Weimaraner. She was such a loyal and protective dog. Although once she chewed off half a door frame! I feel like I’m ready for another companion now, but can’t decide what breed to go for. I might even go for a Heinz 57.

Greyhound for me, laziest and easiest thing in the world! Yes there are some who aren’t quite as rubbish, but mine just sleeps 23 hours a day which suits me perfectly!

I still don’t get the whole designer breeding thing, surely a something crossed with a something else is just a mongrel or crossbreed?! Well it was before people started giving them fancy names as a reason to charge 3 times as much anyway!

I have a 7 month old lab/setter cross, so far she's ripped the cat flap off the door, mangled a few shoes, and pulled out my dryer extractor from the wall, I have a puncture this morning that I suspect was caused by unearthed treasure, but hey, what's not to love, she's irrepressibly cheerful and good-natured, will even sit happily watching the cat pilfering from her food.....

I love my girl. A collie crossed with a Labrador and a Shepherd.

I don't care that she's not a pedigree. She's a rescue and a darling and my shadow. I dread the day she leaves me.

The best dog I had was a border collie cross lab, had him from the age of eight until 23. He was my best friend. I've had a Patterdale size mongrel for 13 years he's a great chum, a bit of a pensioners terrier though.

Sorry to hear that OP, my old Rottie girl has cancer and I know she hasn’t long left.

My 2 boys are my most loyal companions and I never thought I’d love a breed of dog as much as I do..Dobermans are not as scary as Resident Evil would suggest haha

I love staffies. Had a staff x some kind of bull dog when I was a kid and he was the biggest softie I have ever owned. We used to torture him; forever poking him and climbing all over him and riding him like a horse and he never batted an eyelid. Chocolate brown and about twice the size of a normal staffy, called Rocky and although he had been gone nearly 15 years I still think about him loads. He used to run sideways and his back legs used to try to over take his front and he would be our husky dog when we went skating

We used to have a Lhasa Apso and he was pretty special. I’d be hard pushed to see past another if I could have a dog again.

All I would say is adopt rather than shop if you can. There are so many dogs in kennels who need homes. One of my besties is a fosterer for a rescue place in Wales and there are so many coming from puppy farms, it really makes me so sad. She’s kept two so far and they’ve just had no love. They’re beautiful dogs and just needed some love. I’d take them all home if I could.

I hope you find the right pooch for you, it’s tough when you lose them but I totally believe that the love you get and the life you give is worth the heartache at the end.

As for favourite breeds, I adore the German Shepherd, very loving and loyal.

My GSD is 3, total menace but he is so sweet and affectionate, he can read my emotions like a book.

We always had Labradors growing up which are cracking dogs, I had a Staffy for 12 years until last summer though and he was like my best mate so I'd say Staffordshire Bull Terriers are my favourite, they're just always so happy and full of energy even as they get older.

My mum has a specially trained German shepherd as well which again is a lovely dog, he looks scary but he's a complete softy.

I have a black shih tzu... if I had my way I'd have loads of dogs, all different breeds. Take a trip to your local shelter, I guarantee you'll fall in love with at least one of the residents.

I had a golden retriever growing up. Absolutely adored him - friendliest dog I ever had.

I now have three chihuahua x pugs (yes...chugs) and a pug. When we got two of the chugs (they’re sisters) they were extremely overweight. One of them couldn’t actually walk - her belly dragged along the ground and she bum shuffled everywhere. We are so strict with their diet - all their meals get measured, they get walked twice a day, minimum treats etc. I’ve never seen a healthier pug before - he has no breathing problems either! All four of the dogs are so amazing and loyal. Up until I got them, I NEVER wanted a ‘small yappy’ dog. But I love them! I’d have more if my hubby let me.

Great dane. Giant lap dogs that don't any more feeding or exercise than any other dog.

Large enough to provide reassurance but with a placid temperament.

I love my wee mutt Dexter and he loves me. He's the greatest mash up of whatever breeds and looks like a half sized golden retrieved. Got him from the dogs trust 4 years ago. Everyone says he's a wee gentleman and definitely intelligent.

When I was a nipper my aunt used to breed Great Danes. Even the pups were taller than I was, but they were soft as anything. The Mama bitch used to quite happily tolerate us kids clambering all over her, and she'd come and stand by us to "protect" us if the pups were playing too boisterously.

If I were to actually get a dog though, I'd kinda like some sort of tiny lapdog, a Chihuahua or a miniature poodle or something. I'm over 6 foot, hairy as a bear's arse and covered in tattoos. I kinda like the idea of people double-taking when they see a surly-looking brute walking a tiny, girly dog with a pink ribbon.

She regularly comes to the gym with me.

Watching grown men, who make me look small, turn to mush & argue over who cuddles her is hysterical

We had 2 west highland terrier. We’re both different male thought he was the boss but like us humans he was not but like men he learned to be crafty like running to the door barking so she would follow then he would run back and take whatever she had that he wanted lol

We've just put a deposit down on a standard poodle pup. I adored my German shepherd but could never have another due to allergies but wanted that same level of intelligence and loyalty. In an ideal world I'd have a pair of Dobermans but they are just too big and bouncy while we have young children so a standard poodle ticked all the boxes we need.

I adore greyhounds and lurchers. They’re bone idle, 30mph couch potatoes!

I miss having a dog but our lifestyle and working patterns mean it wouldn’t be fair to own one now. My last dog was a gorgeous lurcher, greyhound x Scottish deerhound.

years ago we rescued 2 black lab crosses, the big one was crossed with a doberman, both though were great dogs, one day we came home to find they had chewed the sofa bed to pieces & another time they demolished the wifes rear car seat when she left them alone for a couple of minutes on a trip to the forest, but they looked so innocent when caught, weren't too happy at the time but see the funny side now.

Growing up we had 2 border collie and a mongrel (Not a fancy pseudo breed), I always thought I was a border collie person till I got a Shin Tzu. Will not as energetic or playful at times as the border collie, she is still a fantastic dog.

I'm trying to talk Fred into letting me have a puppy but he keeps saying no We've agreed on a Beagle when we eventually do get a dog, but at the moment he doesn't want the responsibility of a dog and I work full time so it'll remain a no for sometime.

I've two working collies and a Patterdale terrier.

I don't think I'd have a collie as a regular pet, and I certainly wouldn't keep one in the house - they are bonkers. As it is, I walk them a couple of miles, twice a day.

I quite fancy a whippet x bedlington lurcher. Might do me the odd rabbit for dinner too....

He’s the most loyal, intelligent and loving dog I’ve ever known but he’s also mad as a box of frogs and stubborn at the same time, he can easily understand everything you’re saying even in code or when spelling it so he can’t hear you. Looking to get another later in the year, we must be mad!

I have 2 collies both bred from champion sheep dogs. Third generation of collies and would never be without them.

They live in the house are not completely crazy...but they do keep me fit.

If you can OP get two dogs not one they are more content that way...

But just wait till you look in the eyes of the puppy who chooses you...

You will know what dog to get then

Every dog is special, it’s how you bring them up. I believe the dog picks you. I’ve got a Shar Pei.

What a lot of people have said about the dog choosing you is absolutely right, when my parents rescued their lurcher they were actually looking at some German shepherd puppies, but something drew them to the lurcher and then as soon as she was out of the kennel she wouldn't go back in to let them leave

Husky for me too. Mine is as mad as a box of frogs! She is so funny though. The amount of times she has nearly pulled my arm off when she sees a squirrel or rabbit when we’re out walking is not so funny though.

I think they’re great because they’re independent thinkers. It makes them really hard to train but that stubborn/mischievous streak they have is what makes them special. Mine has its own insta account
