Now we've had the debate on people describing themselves as professional....debating to death, but what about those who describe themselves as intelligent?

How do you quantify intelligence? How do you know you are? After all some great minds have stated that the more you realise how little you know, the more intelligent you are?

I have no degree but I consider myself professional... most days anyway.

As for having smarts... well I get by. I can read and write and I can even count to ten without using my fingers.

I know lots about some stuff and nothing about other stuff so I guess it’s subjective.

I also have a professional degree though I do bugger all with it and am no longer in a “profession”. So I’m now a faux professional with no more intelligence than the next person

Some of the most well read and incredibly intelligent people I have had the privilege to meet haven't got degrees or are pigeon holed as professionals.

Conversely, some of the most lacking in common sense have had qualifications galore.

Apart from one chap I did some work for that was just bloody brilliant at everything he set his mind to. AND he was a nice fella. AND he was a bloody handsome devil as well!!

I wasn't in the least bit envious of him... At all... Honest!

I'm 'academically' intelligent in that I have a first class degree and such but at times have absolutely no common sense at all! There are many different forms of intelligence, some of the people I know who'd be classed as traditionally intelligent have limited emotional intelligence and struggle to work with others

I would say that my job requires a certain amount of intelligence but that does not mean I am intelligent. I personally think there are so many different forms of intelligence and it's a very broad aspect.

There is a fairly well tried and tested IQ test to measure pure intelligence.

But as others have noted, this does not necessarily carry over into other aspects of being a successful human being.

Someone with a well rounded personality, i.e. more than just clever, holds my attention longer.

I work with some very bright (mostly Cambridge grads) people.

Most of them I avoid like the plague!

Not so, not in the strict sense anyway. It means that you've attained a certain level, qualification etc within your chosen field and normally have been admitted to your field's professional body, architect, engineer and so on.

It depends where the person's information is coming from. If It's only their opinion, maybe not.

If they know that other people always say these things about them, then they are on firmer ground.

But then you have to walk the line between self marketing, and being a big headed twat. A tough task for some.

Why not? Within a particular field, or regarding a specific skill, people can demonstrate they are better than others.

If I was an Olympian Gold medallist, I could claim to be better than anyone else. At least within that sporting discipline.

Intelligence usually refers to IQ which has fairly standardised methods of assessment (other types of innate ability are available!).

I’ve a physics degree.

I play regularly in a quiz league.

That may make me knowledgeable.... but that’s not the same as intelligent (my IQ is 145....true, but I’m not sure that counts either).

I’ll always remember my mums best out down.... “Shut up.....you know more about the eye of a spud”

There are many forms of intelligence. Academic, cognitive, emotional, creativity, street smarts, interpersonal. The list goes on. There is no accurate measure of holistic intelligence. Scoring high on an IQ test only means you are good at IQ tests. May not necessarily translate to other areas.

Anybody that claims to be super intelligent isn’t, because they don’t even know what they don’t know.

I have no degree. I hated school. My reading, spelling and grammar is terrible (dyslexic). Yet I would say I'm intelligent and those that know me I think would agree. The field I work in is very hard to get into and thus pays well. I have not followed the normal education and employment avenues. There were teachers who said i would amount to nothing. But if a system don't work for you then make your own way. I dont think you can always quantify intelligence with paperwork.

Do an IQ test, test your problem solving abilities, waay more telling than general knowledge stuff.

It's good to love yourself, or be proud of yourself, but to tell people how great you are, unpromoted, is just arrogance in my opinion.

I've worked with and met people with academic qualifications as long as your arm but some I wouldn't trust to walk my dog. But that said, who'd go to a doctor if the only qualifications they had was O-level woodwork!

I can't spell professional or intelligent without help from spell check. I do know that OP's ellipsis are wrong though! (I'm only of average intelligence). I don't think spelling or grammar are a good reflection of how intelligent someone is, just their ability to memorize rules.

My friends dad is a doctor, clearly academically very bright. He came in one day, white shirt covered in oil. His foot pump had come apart and he couldn't put it back together. It only had 4ish components. I put it back together for him while he cleaned himself up.

I think that there are lots of different types of intelligence.

When scientists test for intelligence in the animal kingdom they test them on the ability to problem solve.

In a program the other day they put a piece of meat in a box with a door/flap on it. A lion took 20 minutes to solve the problem. Using the same lion they did it again, this time with another lion watching from a cage. 1st lion opened the box straight away this time. They then put some more meat in the box and let the 2nd lion have a go. He walked over to the box and opened it straight away demonstrating a lion not only has the ability to problem solve but also the ability to learn by watching.

Some people are great at retaining information which is what a lot of academics can do, others have more analytical minds giving them the ability to problem solve, some have both whilst others seem to be limited in either!

Thing is, there is a place in society for all levels of intellectual ability however you choose to measure or judge it. There is to much looking down and being critical of others for what they can't do rather than appreciation for what they can do.

The world is full of taxi drivers that can win master mind and doctors with shit handwriting that can't work out how to put a foot pump back together. The most stupid people are capable of acts of great wisdom and intelligence while some of the cleverest minds are capable of acts of great stupidity.

I try and surround myself with nice people!

Well a mate of mine used to say " you're the most intelligent dumb ass I've ever known ". That does actually sum me up as I know a lot of shit , but I'm equally capable of walking into a lamppost

Everyone is a genius in one way or another, intelligence is merely a matter of perception. If you judge a fish by it's ability to climb a tree it will spend it's whole life being stupid.

I've a first class degree from the university of life. I'm older than most people and pretty much reinvented myself every decade. I researched everything I've ever needed to know, have way more experience at many more things than most and meander through life with eyes wide open and listen to absolutely everyone.

For instance... simply look at the grass outside your door. It ain't just grass. There are so many different varieties of grass - 50 shades of green?

- and the same goes for every single thing on this planet, including people on FAB.

They are entrepreneurs in my book. Professional used to mean the member of a recognised profession, now it doesn't to most, so it will be an argument of semantics.

The problem with the historical usage, is that many of today's "professions" didn't exist when the list was made.

So something not being recognised as a traditional profession, doesn't mean it's not a modern profession.

Just because a person has a degree, masters, or PhD doesn’t make them more or less intelligent than someone who hasn’t

One of my favourites TV programs at the moment is the Un-datables – this is a group of people with learning or physical disabilities and are prejudiced against because of other people’s judgement and perceptions of them, especially with regards to their 'intelligence'.

They are just as intelligent as you or me, the only difference is the skills they need to acquire in order to develop and grow is different to you (by ‘you’ I mean those without a learning difficulty).

My husband my 2 sons and myself all have good Degrees with honours – it doesn’t make us more intelligent, it just means we were lucky in life to have been given the opportunity.

When I did my teaching degree, I did a psychology unit. I'm sure you will find that what I have quoted is a brief description for one of the definitions of intelligence (there are many definitions) taken from the Oxford dictionary / Wikipedia/ Brittanica etc.
