Why are there so many illiterate people on Fab? So often I get replies where "your" is written instead of "you're", "Im" instead of "I'm", "its" instead of "it's" (and vice versa) and (my personal favourite) "defiantly" instead of "definitely". The list goes on. Maybe Fab should introduce a literacy test for its members?

A tolerance test might be better advised.

Because not everybody here speaks English as their first language or received a good education. Some people have additional learning challenges, such as dyslexia.

Some people are just ignorant or intolerant.

As long as you understand what someone is saying does it really matter?

Does being literate make you a better person? Or is it the personality, connection and attitude of a person that makes you want to talk/meet them.

"Maybe Fab should introduce a literacy test for its members?"

That wud be discriminitory.

Joking aside, there are a multitude of reasons why people may have difficulty with spelling and grammar.

Having to type a message into a little text box, using a mobile device and auto-correct may also cause problems.

Op I think you are on the wrong site, we are all here to chat to like minded folk, and meet people for sex.

Sounds like you would be more at home on a writer's forum maybe, I'm sure there's some real sticklers for literacy just like yourself for you to entertain.

So far as I am aware there is no research to suggest people spelling incorrectly are not decent human beings or capable of fucking - and lets be honest no one wants to chat or meet an arsehole. Introducing a literacy test unfortunately will not get rid of arseholes.

At the risk of being shouted down, I do find it difficult that some people don't make the effort to construct a proper sentence. Especially when it is heavily littered with text speak.

I am ok with lol as it is almost part of the English vocabulary bizarrely now. But some people seem to write routinely in text speak and I find it a turn off . Sorry but I do.

I think if someone is dyslexic, then that is different. But that is only a certain percentage of the population and not everyone has that excuse.

Those who say it shouldn't matter? Maybe if one only seeks a fundamental fuck and go... perhaps it doesn't. I guess you could just put a muzzle on them? ??. But for me... communication is an incredibly important (written and verbal) part of the foreplay as it gets me in the mood and certain frame of mind. So if that challenging, then I won't be turned on. Simple.

But I am similar with the spoken word too. Some people struggle to put a sentence together when they speak and I am not referring to those, for whom English is their second language either!

Some people.... are just plain lazy . I am sorry but it's true.

Not because they are dyslexic! People with dyslexia are far from lazy! Not because English isn't their first language either.

Its simply because SOME just can't be bothered!

It's the difference between 'knowing your shit' and 'knowing you're shit'.

Defiantly instead of Definitely is another common failing.

But wait.. Let's not criticise because these people all have dyslexia, every single one of them. It's true.

They'll then blame 'auto correct' on their phone/computer. It's true, auto correct doesn't actually correct spelling of words, it replaces them with words that have similar letters to the one you wanted to type. Don't ever ask why people don't check what word auto correct inserts either, because that'll just bring the debate back to dyslexia and them not recognising words.

While dyslexia does exist and indeed we are aware of many who's lives are blighted by it, lack of basic literacy is a far greater scourge on our green and pleasant land.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Meeting people who struggle to enunciate are not remotely appealing to us.

Having been diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 15, I decided that I would educate myself to get it right. Force myself to understand placement and structure, going against everything my brain recognised and perceived. It's hard, it's an almost daily struggle, but should I just give in and say 'I've been labelled as dyslexic. I can't be arsed nor have any incentive to learn beyond what the education system provides me. I'll go through life saying "but I'm dyslexic" to anyone who questions my spelling'?

I like to think I've made a choice to better myself.

Dyslexic I maybe.. Lazy I'm not!

"Who cares?"

Actually I do. If I need a Rosetta stone to decipher a message, or the other person needs to Google any word I use with more than two syllables then the communication falters.

Would I start a thread about it or pull someone up?

Absolutely not!

If they are illiterate they can't read your thread, OP. Technology may mean the thread is translated to speech for them and, similarly, they may post that way.

I will delete messages that are poorly written but I also delete well written but inane messages.

If the author creates a good comprehension with the message recipient, where is the problem? Some people like to feel superior, so need opportunities to do so - this being one of them.

"If the author creates a good comprehension with the message recipient, where is the problem? Some people like to feel superior, so need opportunities to do so - this being one of them.

Use whatever you want to as a filtering tool. "

It's not a case of wanting to feel superior. If it was, then it could also be a case for the person with poor literacy skills to want to feel inferior. On that basis, you can't condemn one without condemning the other as both are choices.

Spelling mistakes is not as annoying as those who write entire paragraphs without any breaks.

No use of the full stop or comma. It all makes for some very interesting reading, will leave you confused and out of breath LOL

"Who cares?

Actually I do. If I need a Rosetta stone to decipher a message, or the other person needs to Google any word I use with more than two syllables then the communication falters.

Would I start a thread about it or pull someone up?

Absolutely not!

One can use whatever filter works for them without being an arse."

"Why are there so many illiterate people on Fab? So often I get replies where "your" is written instead of "you're", "Im" instead of "I'm", "its" instead of "it's" (and vice versa) and (my personal favourite) "defiantly" instead of "definitely". The list goes on. Maybe Fab should introduce a literacy test for its members?"

There's too much going on in the paragraph for my liking.

OK OK. In my heart of hearts, this is what I wish to say: WHO GIVES A FCUK!?

The other thing on my mind is the crowd's favourite: DELETE, BLOCK, MOVE ON!

Well, OP, several viewpoints have been expressed here. Have you anything to add on, following your first and only post in your thread? I would be interested to hear.

So inappropriate use of an apostrophe combined with the odd typo/autocorrect makes soneone illiterate?
