Chubby gym bunny

I’m off to the actual scary gym. I have paid up. Got some new swanky trainers. My induction is all set for Wednesday. The gym is really exposed though. Everyone walking past can see in. The horror!

I’m really shocked at how crap the range of gym clothes is for fat birds. Either it’s skin tight or made for bag ladies.

Any ideas? I have leggings (sexy right?) and ideas where I can get some long tops from that won’t show off my 3 bellies?

Good luck.

I've no advice for what to wear other than saying as a gym bunny myself I have and knowing how hard work it can be I have loads of respect for anyone putting the effort in.

That always looks better to be than any clothing.

Good luck and don't give up.

I'm a lot bigger than you and even as a man I faced the same thoughts about going. When I got there I realised nobody cares those like me who are fat are sweating that much they don't care. Those that are fitness freaks are too busy looking at themselves rather than anyone else

Definitely. Nobody cares what you look like the fact is your going and it will make you feel good. Well done.

Forever 21 do some nice gear. Mesh detailing and also slogan ones. Abit pricey but worth it

The attraction of my gym is its ladies only and not overlooked. Ages range from 18- 70. No men, no mirrors, no Lycra. I wear leggings and buy men’s tshirts from Primark as they tend to be longer in the body and cheap enough to have a few on the go.

Hope you enjoy it OP. I’m a right lazy ass but manage to get myself there and usually feel better for it.

Just wear a comfy, baggy t-shirt to start with - that's what I did. You don't need to get any special kit.

If you want proper gym stuff Sainsbury's is fantastic. They have the usual yoga type bottoms but also have looser fitting bottoms. The tops are a mix of tight and loose fitting too. They go up to size 24 and are a pretty generous fit.

Primark gym stuff is great and really cheap, they only go up to size 20 though.

Don't worry too much about people looking at you. Those who go to the gym will probably be too busy concentrating on their own work out. Most people at the gym would just congratulate you on trying to make a change in your lifestyle and will offer workout advice and tips if you ask them.

As for those who might look in as they walk past - just think " fuck 'em ". You are very unlikely to ever speak to any of them so it's not worth worrying about what they may think. Plus there's every chance some of them are thinking "I wish I had the courage to go to the gym"

"Is the gym on the ground floor?"

Yes. In a busy part of town. Floor to ceiling windows. Nowhere to hide

That last line is exactly why I took the plunge. Everytime I walk past I feel like I should be inside.

Head down. Forget there are people going past. They could be thinking it should be them in there.

Thanks everyone. I’ll go do some shopping tomorrow. Hopefully find something baggy enough to cover my wobbly arse too.

I’m feeling pretty positive. Hopefully it’s the start of a beautiful relationship.

Invest in decent kit. Priorities should be comfort, practicality and easy drying. Pay zero mind to what anyone else thinks and just concentrate on your own training.

Stick some headphones in and get it done. Keep going even when you don’t feel like it. Good luck!

I wear some great lycra leggings...a colourful vest green or neon yellow it fits snug, tucked into lycra leggings...and buy the biggest black mens tshirt high round neck from M&S where I cut the sleeves but making big arm holes so you see the colourful vest underneath....the black sleeveless tshirt fits right over my bum and it's roomy...I feel hip without looking like an overstuffed sausage and not worrying about my boobs being exposed...and I feel the part, am confident how I look and love my workouts. Good luck OP...sometimes one has to experiment...

A little update. This chubby unfit bunny is going to the gym and working like a demon. I’ve done 6.30am classes and kept up...mostly - Burpees are still beyond me. I’ve had my first personal training session and it isn’t at all scary now. Feeling the burn though. It’s a long road ahead but the first steps are going well!

Good for you. Burpees are hard. Are you feeling better for it? It will get easier and you will find you can push yourself further. Made up for you.

Being in the gym is better than being in the house eating pizza on the sofa.

Everyone will be getting on with their own thing so don't worry about it.

I got a few pairs of Adidas leggings type things from Sports Direct and a load of baggy tees from Primani. I’m on my way there now rocking a rugby shirt and jazzy leggings. Definitely not my sexiest look!
