If you could work time, pay all your bills and have more free time BUT

not enough money for holidays or a nice car..

Would you do it?

Or ..

Would you rather work long hours, not much free time BUT have holidays and a new car?

Slough Windsor ish

Im lucky enough that Cheffy earns enough for me to drop my full time hours to part time due to health issues. We still afford nice things like carsand holidays we just budget differently.

I guess I’m lucky in that I have both. I love my job and I work long hours but my time outside of work is all mine.

I do the former and prefer the free time to spend with friends and the Mrs. I value that more than any holiday or flash motor.

I already do. I can't drive much now anyway and am phobic about flying, so I'm not missing out on anything.

That’s kind of how I work. I choose pretty much when I work and when I don’t. For many years quality of life and life balance have been much more important than making as much money as possible.

I'd rather work part time and just get by. That's what i had when I started my new job, but I keep getting more and more hours I don't want.

I left my previous job for a better work life balance. Some weeks I get that, some I don't. I don't need flash things and holidays to be happy. As long as I can afford the roof over my head and food in my belly and a few friends to call on I'm happy.

That question has me in a quandary... I'm really torn at the concept of increased quality of life from working less hours but sacrificing nice holidays and vehicles... Damn! You've really made me think OP

Work to live, don't live to work.

I am a single working parent, I'm lucky (and have worked bloody hard!) to have a decent job so am able to afford to work part time so i can do school runs for my kid and have a day off each week for me-time. I dont have much spare cash but we have what we need and my emotional health and happiness is more important to me than having a new car or a foreign holiday each year.

Me too... I don’t use it as a coaster, it’s on my fireplace to remind me.

Under the Duvet

I worked 55 hours a week for years.. money in the bank but knackered and miserable. Now work a three day week.Every week feel a like a holiday.

Unless you do a job you love, or desperately need the money I'd say go with the reduced hours every time.

Life is too short. No one lies in their deathbed wishing they'd put a few extra hours in at work.

We gave up full time work a while ago and currently neither of us is earning money. I would never go back to full time work nor would Mr N. Time to us has more value than many other things.

I think I need to make my own and place it on the dash of my van next!

Foreign holidays are overrated anyway. Hours cooped up in a plane, sweaty nights where you can't sleep, upset stomach and crying because you miss your kids.

It amazes me the number of people who live for their two weeks in the sun every year.

I'd much rather work part time, and I couldn't care less about what car I drive as long as it's mechanically sound and cheap to run.

My life choice is the former. That's why i choose to accept my current job. We've Never felt the need for expensive holidays or cars... although it would be nice to have a little extra each month we can scrape by for now.

We do go away to furrin twice a year if we can so we're not strictly in the first category. We don't have Aston Martins though.

Very true. I understand that some people are lucky enough to have jobs they love and that are very fulfilling. However for many of us work is just a means to an end and the less of it we can do the more time we have to spend on things we love and find fulfilling.

I'm amazed that you can still do that.

My work has a smoking shelter thing outside. I'm sure it'd be much better if people were simply not allowed to smoke on work premises.

Ads worked full time and me part time and we were just about managing but I decided late last year that I needed more hours to be able to enjoy life a little more so looked for more hours and I got that with the same company I was already with (they matched hours I was offered elsewhere and it was more pe hour) so now I work full time and this month was lovelt because we could pay for extra things for the wedding and was able to treat my son to a lovely birthday meal, we would have done it before but it would have been tight. So I’m happy to work that bit harder for better things.

B & M Bargains

I tried to go part time last year, the plan was to have enough money to cover the essentials and if I wanted luxuries I would need to build up some self employed work alongside! It’s ended up me doing 4 days in one job and 1 in the other for the time being as someone left my new place. Whilst the money is nice to have, I can’t wait to be able to cut out a day again so i can get better work-life balance
