After several friends and family passing away in the last year I've come to the conclusion that I have to give up smoking Asap. It won't be easy ( I gave up for 9 months once ) . I'm going on willpower alone. Anyone else got any fullproof methods they've tried??

There and to the left a bit

Vaping worked for me - went from cigs to vaping overnight and didn't get any cravings the way I did with any other time I tried to quit.

Only problem is it's substituting one habit with another - albeit one that's not as harmful.

Good luck with it

I did try it briefly but found I was coughing more than smoking normal fags . But cheers for the advice

Cold turkey.

That’s how I did it but I really wanted to stop. I think you have to want to. It’s a habit. It stinks. It’s costly. You’ll feel much better almost immediately. You won’t smell. You’ll be able to use the cash for something much more worthy.

Just decide what you’re doing and do it.

I have a similar experience, except with sugar rather than smoking.

I've joined a site called "Habitica." It is a website that encourages habit building (or breaking, in your case) by gamifying your normal life experiences. People participate in challenges together so there are incentives for being good. And it also have support groups who discuss tips and issues. I have cut my sugar intake in half over the past few months (maybe even more than half!). I would suggest checking it out. Its free (there are subscription levels but all of the important stuff can be done for free) and I have found it really helpful as a community.

Have you read the easy way book by Allan Carr (not the comedian!).

It really helped me, it makes you think about things differently. I went cold turkey after reading it and haven't looked back.

"I’m looking into cigars and pipe "

My father did both after cigarettes became too expensive for him. Pipes were dirty dirty - really disgusting. He quit using them because of the grime (and he was no clean freak). Cigars smelled gross, but they weren't much different than cigarettes....until he decided he still needed to inhale to feed his addiction. Died by age 54.

I gave up on my third attempt over 20 years ago and you are almost there. I did it cold turkey and it was a walk in the park because like you, I realised it’s an utterly stupid and dangerous thing to carry on doing. There is not one good reason to continue.

I see friends now using ecigs, vaping and lots of other props to give up but very few are down to zero nicotine and have replaced one habit for another. Most still smoke too.

You WILL be able to do this.

Having kids finally stopped me.

I never smoked in front of or around them but they knew.

“Daddy, why do you smell of smoke?

You do know smoking kills don’t you?”

Couldn’t take the look of disappointment on their little faces anymore.

Kids are very expensive and time consuming though so I’m not sure I could recommend this method.

Haven't read the thread.

Buy any of Dr Alan Carr's books (r.i.p)

Try a vapeing device.

keep yourself occupied when you get the urge (they will pass).

Stop buying cigarettes or tobacco and then you can't.

One day at a time OP and do yourself and remaining loved ones proud. All the very best

I was an expert at giving up. Tried nicotine replacement in a variety of forms but always started again. In 2008 I had was diagnosed with hypertension and just stopped cold turkey, swore I’ll never smoke again and haven’t. Nicotine cravings went within 3 weeks and the physical habit I replaced with drinking more water

Cold turkey best way. If you can do it for 9 months you can do it for good, but you really must want to stop I smoked 30 a day for 25 years. I tried several times with patches, but then just stopped without using anything. Have stopped 20 years now never even having the urge (tho I still dream I smoke) ps.be warned your sex drive will go mental, mine did lol

I agree . Cold turkey. I did just that. 4 years ago . Stopped threw all related items and went for it.

I enjoy the feeling of not looking for the cigs first thing in morning

No more smell, more energetic and feel great.

Switched from dirty stinking fags to a vape one lunchtime.... totally had had enough of the smell, mess and stained fingers that needed bleeching to get clean. Smoked roll ups mainly.

Vape is dry and can make you cough for a while but I found stick with it for a few hours and that stops.

I've gone from at least £40 a week to around £3 maybe less on liquids, no longer have that foul stale fag smell, feel 1000% healthier for the last 8 months now.

Not touched a cigarette at all since.

Next bit is to ditch the vape which I don't think will be a problem once I'm 100% committed to doing so.

Biggest problem is people trying to quit when they really don't want to. You have to have that brain click moment when you ask yourself why are you smoking and you can't give an answer anymore.

Good luck, but you won't need it if you really want it. It's all psychological.

I was told you do cough for the first couple of weeks, I think it was because the 'vape' you inhale is cold, as opposed to hot burning tobacco smoke, which is warmer when inhaled. Apparently you get used to it.

It's a liquid so your lungs are shocked, eeeek water, I'm drowning. That kind of thing. I was past it after 3 days luckily.

Or at least that's the theory that I was told why you cough so harshly.

Adding water to your lungs ... isn't that aspirating .... sounds dangerous .... in a few years time when more research has been done there will be a warning about vaping too

I gave up in August last year after 20 years of very dedicated smoking - I had a health scare which promoted me to quit so I went cold turkey and had a vape for nights out just in case I was tempted to smoke (got rid of the vape after a month). I found the best motivator was an app on my phone called "Get rich or die smoking" (I'm on android) which tots up how much money you've saved amongst many other benefits. I've just passed the £1k mark and that really is an amazing motivator! Highly recommend the app. Go for it, finally quitting smoking is one of the best things I've done xxx

Most supermarket vape juices are high in Polyglycol, which is rough on the throat. try getting one high (70%) in vegetable glycol, much smoother and makes much better clouds.

Ok fair enough. Good luck for Monday and enjoy tomorrow night.

Your going to be so grateful you've done this and you'll be suprised how you won't miss the fag next time your out with the lads.

Stick at it but don't get this big mental hurdle in your head Sunday night.

If you have any left around the house bin them on Sunday night.

Get a Dr Alan Carr book or try and see if there is anything online starting this evening or even now if able.

Good Luck it's one of the most amazing things you could do.
