Serious question... Why is it...

That when I dye my hair red it always ends up looking rusty rather than a vibrant colour?

I follow the instructions to the letter and while it doesn't look awful, it doesn't have the feel and look I would really like.

Any tips folks?? Any hairdressers on here like to share their knowledge with me please?

Thanks

Reds are hard colours to do. What colour is your natural hair?

If your natural colour's quite dark, a bright colour (or pretty much any colour) won't take properly unless your hair's already prelightened.

You have to bleach the hair to lighten it before you apply your red. If i remember correctly from college

Hiding in the shadows

I'm a strawberry blonde, used to dye my hair pillar box red for years.

To get a real vivid colour you'll need to pre lighten or bleach your hair.

I'd have to take mine down to white blonde to get a real bright red

What colours are you using? The live xxl ones have a prelightener in them. I use the ultra violet one and it looks fab

That'll probably be too dark for a bright red then.

I mean bleached slightly, not bleached white but lightened enough for the colour to take.

Oh I loved those dyes, I think I made my way through every shade a few years ago.

From my teenage rocker days I'd have to bleach my hair to pretty much white before the addition of 0colour otherwise as you mention reds would not come through. I do have black hair.

My ex who had mousey bloned still had to bleach her hair to allow pinks & reds to be vibrant.

I had an ex girlfriend who had a mohawk, her hair was dark. We went through A LOT of bleach and all the colours of the rainbow, including neon yellow

I’m going to be going bright red for the wedding so this thread has been very ‘enlightening!’

My natural colour is mousy brown, I haven't bleached it to get the colour in my avatar. If you want to pm me I'll tell you the products I used.

Sorry to jump in this thread and it may be a question that seems silly but if I prelighten my hair, when can I apply the red? Same day or so I have to wait?

Sorry if it seems silly lol.

Im a qualified hairdresser. Pre lighten so yes bleach which kills your hair im afraid and then a pre pig which is like a semi permanent colour to give the red a base so use like an orange under tone.

Plus for vibrant colours i recommend professional tints/dye/colours they will not fade as much as box colours/dyes and wash out so quickly. U really do get what you pay for in terms of hair products

Just don't bleach it too much as you'll damage the cuticle of the hair and the colour molecules will escape easier and the red will fade quicker x

I think I might push the boat out on this one and go to a salon, this is all a bit to scientific for my liking and I can’t fuck it up, I don’t want to be a green head for the wedding

Not meeting

I use Garnier Nutrisse 6.60 and colour in layers starting from roots. It’s the best i’ve managed with a home colour

It is crazy at how much bleach is required. Also ended up leaving it in for an hour or 2 depending on mood.

Hi

When I was a teenager I dyed my mousey brown hair black as was a goth. To die it red I needed to bleach it first. Then it all fell out and not I have a shaved head! Still love The Cure and The Smiths though!

Its a safety net to prevent us genuine red heads being confused with fakes. Sadly I am going grey in guy mode but still a ginger!

To go from dark to vibrant colour, you need to bleach your hair first otherwise it won't take.

I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself, let a professional do it unless you want to wreck your hair.

Scunthorpe

I often dye mine red.

The only time my hair was fully bleached was the very first time - I'm naturally a dark blonde. A hairdresser friend did it for me.

I now only bleach the roots (do it myself carefully) and actually rather like the pink it fades out to. So I only bleach it every 4 weeks or so.

It's really important to use good shampoos and conditioners.
