1 in 3 young women won't get their smear test done because

A) they worry about the way they look

B) because they haven't got waxed

C) worry about how they smell

If you are invited for your smear GET IT DONE!

Don't put it off. These nurses are professionals. They do not give a rats arse about any of the above.

Please, please get it done!!!

I'm going for mine on 2nd Feb. It's a six month check up because I had cells removed after my last one. I'm looking forward to it with fingers crossed that I get the all clear.

I've always had mine done. Except for the last one, I've always been clear and it was a shock when it wasn't last time.

Ladies, please get it done.

If you are a mum, partner, whatever please encourage your partners, daughters or what ever female of screening age you are close to to go get it done.

Mine is due and I’ll be booking it.

They were saying when Jade Goody was terminally ill with cervical cancer , lots more people had it done due to her making it high profile. I wonder if someone doesn’t make an appointment if they could do more to understand their fears. Some might not seem like a rational fear but nonetheless very real to that individual.

hiding from cock pics.

A friend who is on here, has survived cervical cancer. Before the time they gave her her first test she found she already was suffering.

I can't stress enough how much you should get your test done.

I usually have a nice little chat with the nurses who do mine. Same with the gynaecologist and his nurses and any other health professionals I happen to be examined by.

I don't shave my pubic hair for my examinations, and had stubbly legs when I went for my gynaecology physio last week. Myself and the physio had a chat about cream for dry, itchy skin.

Too true but they need to go and see the nurse to talk through their fears.

The first one is always the worst but once it's out of the way you realise that tiny procedure that lasts no more than 2 minutes is so much better than what could happen if you have cervical cancer and don't get checked!!!

Is that because women are less likely to contract cervical cancer after menopause?

If I remember correctly it's because the cancer would be much slower growing and less likely to occur. So yes.

They had so much trouble doing mine once that they did it under general anaesthetic while I was having another procedure done . I never understood why because although I have what a nurse referred to as a "tucked away" cervix it's never been a problem before or since.

My sister is 48 this year and has never had a smear test, she has never had sex and is bleeding heavily every month (well pretty much every day) and the doctor said because she’s never been sexually active she doesn’t need one, no idea if that’s true or not.

Geeky x

Some nurses may be more competent than others. The difference in phlebotomists is quite noticeable too.

Most but not all cervical cancer cases are caused by the HPV virus and you can only get that through sexual intercourse.

Your sister might be starting her menopause? A simple blood test could help to see if that's the case. If it's bothering her she should see the doctor and ask for an investigation to see what's going on. Good luck

Don't we know it! Long story but Mr N had surgery last week, his hand was black from the cannula. I had to dash him to a and e on Saturday where they put a cannula in his other hand which is now black from his wrist to first knuckles and swollen

It's a sorry state of affairs when body image issues are overpowering health issues. What a twisted and manipulated society we've become.

It's not new. When I was younger a friend of mine thought she couldn't go for a smear test because she'd shaved.

She’s been back and forth to the doctors (she has special needs and doesn’t like to tell male doctors everything, I’ve told my mum she has to go with her but she won’t listen), she had a blood test the other day and needed a double blood tranfusion, she had a scan a few months back and showed a couple of fibroids but she had a scan while in hospital last week and didn’t shoe anything, the doctor felt her tummy and said he can feel something though and has an appointment with a gyno specialist next week hopefully.

I thought start of menopause but because she acts so young (always said she’s like my little sister) I think a lot of people see her as far too young, even though my mum went through it at 36.

Hopefully it will get sorted soon.thanks x

Near enough

Its shocking how many simply refuse to go and get their smear tests done, and yes I do mean refuse, and I used to be one of them.

8 years ago I lost my mum (aged 46) to Ovarian Cancer which cannot be detected through a smear test, however she had had gynaecological issues for YEARS and she refused to get her smears done but was constantly in and out of the doctors with some issue, but when they would tell her she was due a smear, she would just laugh at them.

After having my last child, i started having bleeding issues, very nasty, very complicated and I put myself forward to have a smear test and the doctors didn't want to know because i was 21!!!

2 years ago I went for a routine smear and they found 'abnormal cells' which had to be removed, the doctor that did the procedure chatted away to me much in the same way that the person on the checkout til chats away, he had a small team there, he took several swipes and was happy that he had removed everything that he could and advised that I would need a follow up smear 12 months later. As soon as I got that letter last march I phoned through, got my appointment and 3 weeks later had the all clear.

Honestly, do not put off these tests. If something is found early, they can deal with it quickly and effectively.

A great thread op

I had mine last year, needed to go and get checked at the hospital no problems. Just need another smear this year.

It really isn't the be all and end all of how you look 'down there'

It's probably one of the most important health tests as a woman that you get done.

Ladies , please go and get checked it doesn't take long, yes it's a little bit uncomfortable.

Cannot reiterate enough how important smears are. I had severe dyskariosis, and had cells removed.

It was a scary time, and one I hope never to repeat.

Thanks for joining the thread folks. It's such an important issue.

One lovely lady has already booked hers, let's keep it going. Hopefully a few more will do too.

Keep your stories coming too, good and bad.

Things like this were never spoken about at home when I was younger. It was very much "hush hush".

I feel if it were talked about more, it would become a normal thing. No embarrassment surrounding it.

I had mine done after putting it off for ages (I have anxieties from childhood) and it was no where near as bad as I thought. M came with me so I felt a little more comfortable. I had an abnormality, so I had to go for a colposcopy appointment, but they gave me the all clear and told me I had a very healthy cervix. I feel much better about it and I honestly urge every lady to go!!

Last time I went my smear test was very uncomfortable, since I’ve lost weight it has gone up and tilted back so it’s difficult to reach. I will however go for mine as my grandmother died from ovarian cancer. And after having a breast cancer scare as well a couple of years ago I will make sure I go for mammograms when asked x

Wirral

I had mine 2 weeks ago & got the all clear results today.

15 years ago I had laser treatment to remove abnormal cells with 6 monthly checks for 3 years. It’s so very worth it.

A spokesman for Jo’s Trust Cervical Cancer Charity has said recently that ‘the Jade effect’ is dying as people forget & linger goes by - I think it’s 10 years this year!

I have a friend who has terminal cervical cancer - it’s spread too far to treat - purely because she was embarrassed to go. She’s a fighter & has now exceeded her expectancy date by just over 2 years & made it to her 40th birthday, but she is aware that she’s on borrowed time now. Heartbreaking really.

Please encourage everyone to get theirs done!! It does save lives! x

Mine tilts back so I pop my fists under my bum to lift my pelvis. Works a treat.

Totally agree. Which is why as women we need to take a stand and tell our younger female relatives/friends that peventing cervical cancer isn't about fashion or positive body image, it's about taking control of our health. After all we're not going to look too good when we're dead!!

The one that made me laugh the most was that young women were worried that they hadn't waxed. If you go and get your fanny out to get waxed (because it's fashionable) then they can get it out for a smear test. A lot less painful too.

Let's make getting a smear fashionable.

My daughter is 18 and one of the first batch to get the HPV vaccine. If/when she gets her invite, she'll be going even if I have to drag her there . In actual fact I think it will be a case of going for coffee and a slice of cake after, maybe even shopping.

One thing that does annoy me is young women who want to go and have smear tests are turned away because they are under 25.

They are too old to have been given the hpv vaccine but too young to get a smear.

It is rare but young girls are dying because of this. By the time they are old enough to have their first smear it is too late.

They should be tested if they have a family history or have symptoms.

The NHS shouldn't moan about the extra cost because 1 in 4 of the five million women being invited for smears aren't going. There must be a huge amount going begging so I can't see why those who have been sexually active for a few years shouldn't be allowed to have one.

Not wanting to hijack this very important thread but the body image point (a reason for not having a smear test) is also at the heart of the news story about the high use of steroids by men especially in order to have the 'ripped' look. This is another health timebomb waiting to go off.
