A State of Emergency has been declared in the Montego Bay area following a sharp rise in violent crime. British tourists are being advised not to leave resorts during the Army lead crackdown on gangs!

This comes as no suprise to me, following my visit to the Montego Bay area I vowed never to return!

* Tour bus was stoned, breaking windows.

* Being asked many times for money just for taking photographs of the scenery, once at knife point!.

* Being threatened to leave an area by guys with machine guns!.

* The week before I arrived 2 tourists were murdered a few miles away.

I've been to Montego Bay. I didn't feel safe and would never go back.I felt quite intimidated in Kingston and was hassled a lot. It's a shame because it's a beautiful island, particularly Negril.

I was there in November, but as I was only there for a week, I didn't venture off the compound and just relaxed, so didn't see any violence but found all the staff very respectful

Had a lovely holiday in Ocho Rios in the mid-nineties. The only place I didn’t feel safe at that time was in the town’s market.

Sounds a terrifying state of affairs

Great place..love Jamaica and looking forward to returning to Montego bay in the summer, earlier if we win the lottery..lol

Travelled to many places in Jamaica and felt very safe..you get the usual hassle from people trying to sell you stuff at inflated prices..much like any holiday resorts across Europe.

They aren't targeting tourists, the state of emergency is because the Army has gone in and they to will be shooting, so you could get caught up in it all. Again much like anywhere don't go areas that

you don't know or have been told to avoid.

Many people travel all over the world with no issue any to get robbed or mugged here in the UK!!!!

The only people I've heard of frequenting there are elderly women hunting BBC.

Jamaica is like any other place in the world, if you go to the wrong area at the wrong time you could end up in a shitty situation. If you don't (which is a lot more likely) it's an extremely beautiful country.

I went last year for a family wedding! As it saved them ££££££ so maybe best to not presume as often as you seem to do

Same. I remember forever being asked by the women if I wanted my hair braided which over the course of two weeks I'd politely said no thankyou,after the two weeks I was sick to death of it and snapped no. One of the women screamed back at him,after that I politely went back to saying no thankyou

No sod off I don't want my hair braiding or your drug's ta very much. We were stood waiting to get the stamp on our hand's for the beach holding hand's like we always did and some guy said "it's ok no-one will steal your woman". Thinking back was he insulting me!

Jamaica is beautiful .. I go for the reggae and culture , beautiful beaches and lush countryside ( and no I’m not a smoker or a bbc Hunter !) there’s just something about the place , as they say “ once you go , you know .. “ it’s such a chilled out relaxed place and yes there are some dangerous areas , as there are anywhere you just need to be aware of where is safe ..there will always be isolated incidents in any foreign countries where tourists might come to harm , Jamaica is full of poverty away from the resorts , but Jamaicans don’t want to hurt tourists we are their bread and butter . And if you take the time to talk with the locals you will find them very humble .
