Meditation and sleep

I've meditated on and off since my teens. Recently committed to a 40 min / day session, up near a hundred days.

I'm traditionally a 7-8 hr sleeper, yet over the last few months, I'm finding 5.5-6 hrs is more than sufficient to wake feeling alert and fully rested.

Anecdotal claims that sleep requirements are reduced with meditation, anyone had/ having a similar experience?.

Somewhere In The Ether…

I’ve heard unsubstantiated claims that some Tibetan Monks never sleep, rather that deep meditation supplies them with the requisite state of Delta brain wave activity. Mind you, who’s to say that said masters arn’t in actual fact, merely displaying the somewhat less than impressive feat of having perfected the art of sleeping whilst in a sitting position?

Seriously though, an induced state of deep relaxation/trance is probably likely to replace at least a small portion of ones necessary sleep time so it wouldn’t surprise me if one finds oneself to need less sleep after habitually performing meditation/self hypnosis techniques etc.
