... because I cannot think of one!

By virtue, a good leader cannot be negative IMHO, as he/she needs to stay positive in order to find ways to boost morale of his/her team even when the chips are down.

Heaven's Gate was an American UFO religion based in San Diego, California, founded and led by Marshall Applewhite (1931–1997) and Bonnie Nettles (1928–1985).[1] On March 26, 1997, police discovered the bodies of 39 members of the group who had committed suicide

They often start out as charasmatic (not Gordon obviously) and tap the issues of the time. Problem is that old saying about power corrupting absolutely comes into play along with the desire to stay forever, to acheieve that you have to kill your enemys and most of your followers!

The Jonestown cult (officially named the "People's Temple") was founded in 1955 by Indianapolis preacher James Warren Jones. Jones, who had no formal theological training, based his liberal ministry on a combination of religious and socialist philosophies.

I don't think most of the replies are answering the question really...it's not who we personally think were negative, it's whether a leader can have a negative attitude when they have to inspire those around them. Right?

Hitler was clearly a negative person, but he didn't conquer by moping around and telling the Germans that they were rubbish!

So I'd say generally no, there wouldn't be many examples of effective leaders with negative attitudes.

There’s a stark difference between a leader and a dictator, although many dictators start off as leaders…

But a dictator does not have the support of everyone he leads, in the same why someone who is democratically elected to lead, does not have the total support of everyone he represents...

Hence why my suggestions are cult based….!. therefore I hope the reasons for that, are obvious !!!

"Adolf Hitler must have been a negative leader."

No, he wasn't. If he was a bad leader, how did he manage to have so many believe in him, and his policies? At the time, he was a far more popular leader then any of our prime ministers have ever been.
