Secret is you have to put the lid on with the cup sat on a hard surface

drop the lid on hold it with one hand and run your finger around the lid from the one had until it meets that hand at the other side

I was caught out by a lid while on the train to Manchester once. All down my front, had to get to a shop pdq to buy a new t-shirt as I was meeting friends and had coffee from my chin to my belly button! Not a good look so yes they should be checked before drinking
