FAB CRAP RUNNERS' CLUB

WEEK THREE!!!!

MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug

.

.

.

Well done you gorgeous bunch of sex pots!

34 people reported progress during Week Two. That's 34 of us who are pushing on as the novelty wears off but who are seeing changes already in what we can do.

.

.

.

EXPLANATION:

If you're unsure what it's all about, the old thread explains (linked to below) but, in short, from 1st January, we're all trying to improve our fitness through "Couch to 5k" (C25K) which is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (I'm using Get Running). A few people are getting fit by other means including walking and cycling - all are welcome.

We're all expecting to be utterly crap at it but we're doing it anyway - yay us!

Old thread: https://m.fabswingers.com/forum/lounge/711745

New members are still very welcome - post on this thread and I'll add you to the list next week.

.

.

.

THE OFFICIAL MEMBERS OF THE FAB CRAP RUNNERS' CLUB:

Adam 1971 Did week three run two and stopped 30 seconds from the end. (Doesn't matter - you're bloody awesome)

AdsandGeeky Geeky is walking four miles at a time. (That's amazing - what a change in a very short time).

Bitch_and_Twat Been v ill. (Take is easy - get better first).

Blue Narwhal Done fifth walk/run and also did a five mile cross country course in the mud! (You seem to spend a lot of time in the wet! Imagine how much easier it'll be in the spring).

BlueWonder Week two run two done. It was tough but he got through it. (That's the spirit. You kick arse!)

bobtheredelephant . Not been running due to work this week but did a week's worth of steps in a day! (That's amazing. Let us know how the runs go when you restart).

BoPeep1 Joined a beginners' running club finishing with Park Run in March. (That's a great target. We know you can do it)

Chasing waterfalls Signed up for 5k Race for Life. (Brilliant! You'll be great)

divine comedy Away with work and booked accommodation near the gym. (Did you use the gym?! Let us know)

eFEMeral Both new runners and new members of the Fab Crap Runners' Club. (Welcome! Tell us your progress)

Evie!! Injured but marshalled at Park Run. (Sorry to hear you can't run at the mo - get better soon).

_xciter7169 Started a little late but managed a run/walk of about two miles. Wants to build confidence. (You're in the right place for confidence. Tell us how you're getting on and we'll cheer no matter how dire! )

goodtimes_888 Running in between watching the cricket. (Well done with the running. I find it harder to enthuse about cricket!)

harte2harte Chatting on the thread. (Not sure whether you're running too but you're very welcome).

here4fun87 Wants to improve fitness. Already runs 10k but doesn't enjoy it! (That's the spirit! This could be your spiritual home!)

jackspop Does deliveries. Lost three stone in the first year of the job but nothing since and needs motivation. (We can do motivation! Tell us how you're getting on).

justmaybe . Did a mile round a local track and some stretching exercises. (That's a great start. Keep going)

Just normal people . Did five miles in 55 mins. Nice stroll with the dog. Considering cycling. (That's sounds really impressive to me. Well done!)

Makenchi . Did 5k run on the treadmill in 43 mins. Doing 10,000 steps a day. (That's a great combination of stuff. Are you feeling the benefit?)

Mickey and Minnie Prefers running in the morning. (Hey guys. You were so busy being lovely to everyone on the thread, you didn't say much about what you're up to. Let us know).

Micky-disco Says it's getting easier. Up to 12 and 15 minutes of running! (That's fantastic. Getting easier??? Seems an impossible dream to me!)

Miss.Honey Thinking about running. (That's the first step!)

Mixed Mister New member. Welcome. Ordered new running trainers and intending to start. (You've got the kit now use it! And come back to tell us about it)

Morpork Watch . Been working out in a friend's gym. Stiff for three days afterwards. (I am avoiding all stiff jokes... Very well done!)

MrsTrellis . Week three run one done with watering eyes. (I'm majorly proud of myself!)

northerndels1000 Swimming on days when she does a nightshift. Running on other days. (How that pattern working? Sounds perfect)

Polarbear73 Ran 2k to the shop to buy healthy breakfast. Done week two run two. (Well done. Although I'm never coming to yours for breakfast. Fruit? Jeez)

Shyno . Swimming, rowing, cycling and jogging! (You star - that's a full house!)

signorina Did metafit this week and didn’t pass out, as well as week two run three! (I don't even know what metafit is but it sounds hard!)

SimplyClass Mark started in the new year and is enjoying the motivation of the thread. New member of Fab Crap Runners' Club. (Welcome! Tell us how it's going for both of you)

sparky4g Managed a mile in under 10 mins. (Wow - that's a great start. Well done!)

tandh Went jogging before work and felt amazing! (Really good idea. Start the day feeling pleased with yourself).

tigercub89 . Two miles in 28 mins. Doing circuits like she's about to collapse! Really good - that's fantastic. Glad you're sticking to the club running style (running like you're about to die).

Topsy Rogers Used to be in the army. Finding it hard work to get fit again but says doing it feels ace! (Nice one! Really glad you're doing it. You're ace!)

I'm in. I've started my week 3 and it's tough, but then so were the others.

There's nobody more like a couch than me, I went into DFS last week and someone in a shiny suit and a tie with a massive knot tried to sell me. However if I can do it, you can too.

I should have the time, just need the will power.

Once I have been running for a couple of weeks, it becomes a habit.

This week I’m only working four days (was only meant to be three but has the big boss coming in Tuesday so have to be there for that).

Ads and I are off to the flicks tomorrow night so I’ll bus it there and then walk back (just under two miles), Tuesday I’ve got to be in work for 8 so I’ll orobably walk (1.8 miles) and then bus it home, weds I’ll walk one way and then bus it home another not sure on the combination yet, Thursday we are off to eurekas then to see my son and walk up to the pub so probably get in another couple of miles, then it’s the weekend probably fit another 4 miles in, I will definitely break this week!!

Thinking about maybe signing up for some kind of fun run thing where you can walk later in the year as I have majorly surprised myself this week.

I even walked the kids to the bus stop today and that’s over a mile away with no complaints and back again and I felt fine!

Geeky x

Yep, I’m behind too (after effects of flu are still lingering as they are wont to do)...so this week is all about recovery, trying to live a reasonably normal fuggle existence and not exhaust myself. May not run this week, but start Week 2 during the official Week 4. So anybody who feels they are “behind”, stay with it/restart and join me in posting. Still around to advise or for random drug testing (taking the piss) of course. Good luck everyone, “these Moobs were meant for walking”.

Running in the rain is a pleasure, if you're a man though put plasters over your nipples or cry in pain later

I'm usually a regular runner but very unfit at present. I'm at a meeting later six miles from home so will run there to earn the right to eat and drink then get a lift home.

Can anyone advise me please?, i started this programme in summer, got to week 7. Meaning i went from being able to run barely 30 seconds at a time to running 25 mins without stopping and im very unfit! I stopped in september when i came back to uni. Should i start from the beggining again?

Impossible to say without knowing how fit you are now. I would advise starting with week 1 day 1, and if that is too easy, try week 2 day 1 next time. Based on those 2 runs, and your recall of how you felt doing it last time, pick a level you feel would be tough but doable, and start from there. Good luck!

I wouldnt if i was you, you know you're capable of running without stopping so plan a route out thats about 5km then run it until you stop, walk a bit then do whatever it takes to finish the 5km.

Have a day or so rest and go out again with the intention of beating your previous effort.

Wont take long until your back to your old level

Went to leave and it had started to rain so back in to get a raincoat, started to do the 5 min walk, very cold and wet, got past where i usually start to run and nothing so looked at app and it had stopped so i had to start again but ran for over 3 mins before walking and did the full 6 so in fact i did 7 runs....i had a bit of a hard patch as i was going uphill but dare i say it, it was easier than last week, lets see how i feel tomorrow

If you got week seven you could try starting at week 3 or 4, but a better idea would be do w1r1. If that’s easy go straight to w2r1, then w3r1 until it isn’t so easy. Then carry on as normal, every other day of course.

"Whats a half marathon like? "

HM is my favourite distance. Far enough to be challenging, but without the three month of training needed to do a marathon.

Think of it as 4 parkruns and a victory lap.

Going from 0 to 5k is really hard. 5k to 10k is difficult. 10k to half marathon is a little easier.

Advice if possible

Is it better to stick to one method or try different ones to see what suits better. Ive been doing 1 minute jogging and 2-3 minutes walking. But jogging kills me.

Would it be better to stick to this and increase jog/decrease walk time or try maybe jog 30 seconds - walk 30 seconds and increase the jogging slowly from there.

So many things going on in my head

We're all an experiment of one, you need to find what works for you. Sounds like you might be better off with a shorter jogging period for now, something which you can achieve with a bit of effort, but doesn't leave you doubled over. Once you get comfortable with that then slowly increase the jogging time. Persistence will pay dividends, stick with it! x

I’ve heard of people doing slow walking in the walking bits and fast walking in the jogging bits.

Or jog so very very slowly that it’s almost imperceptible. As if you’re doing a who-can-jog-the-slowest competition.

For me, following a couch to 5k app, helped me think that it must be doable because the app said it was.

Don’t lose heart! I’ll repost a link to something sent by MrAlleycat who knows about this stuff.

Here you go. It emphasises that very slow and steady it the absolute best way. So bollocks to what stage everyone else is on. You’re out there doing exercise and that’s a load more than most people are doing.

Remember - this is the Crap Runners’ Club. We want the people who hate running and have no natural flare for exercise! People like me!

You’re doing bloody brilliantly you know. X

I can see theres progress as i went from quick walking to slow jogging for a minute. Takes me at least 2.30 to be able to breathe properly again as i tried decreasing walk time but couldnt jog again for any length of time.

Just thinking if i maybe decrease jog time and walk time both to 30 seconds (yet to try it out) i may be able to breathe but also jogging for more time overall. But i dont know if doing that would be sending my progress backwards rather than forwards.

Not losing heart though. Just theories going through my head

The fact there’s progress it great. Maybe you’re just needing small increments. As long as you’re out there and getting your heart rate up a bit you’ll get fitter over time.

Good effort, tweaking running programmes can be fun when it works...and when it doesn’t, tweak something else...as long as it’s a nipple rather than a calf muscle

"Went for another run tonight, goin to try and get into a regime of this, alternate days,we'll see

That’s a great idea. Are you following a plan or doing it yourself? Doin it off me own back, whats the plan?

Most are doing variations of the c25k plan.Just checked that out, thanks,is it the NHS one? Anyone got any recommendations for a cheap GPS running watch? "

People are using different ones, plenty variations come up if you search.

Cant help with gps watches though technology is not my strong point

You can buy a good selection of watches but if it's only a part time hobby that can prove expensive, there are a load of free smartphone apps you can use, I use starva someone else is using map my run, maybe download 1 of them until you are really in to running and then buy a watch

You are only competing with yourself. Others have different histories, bodies, physiologies...everyone can win at running!

And well done, you are right on track with respect to the original purpose of this group.

Weather pretty nasty yesterday and today, so I'm officially awarding double MTFU points to everyone who has or will run in it.

Apart from if you do it indoors on a treadmill. Single points only then I'm afraid

Yes, parkrun is great, especially for new runners who fancy entering a 'proper' race, but might be feeling a bit nervous or in_imidated at the thought of being out there with 'proper' runners.

Park run is nothing like that, it is very welcoming to new/slow runners and walkers, it's whole ethos is based on inclusivity and providing an opportunity for everyone to get out there and give it a go.

If you fancy a more organised run, but are worried about taking the plunge, then parkrun is definitely for you!

Just fire up Google and it will point you to your nearest one. Go on, you know you want to.......

Uh oh!

I've accidentally registered to run in a sponsored run.

My other-half was registered for the race but was standing on the back of the settee last night hanging something up, fell off and it now laid up for six to eight weeks.

So the place in the race has been passed to me. Oh god! It's on 18 March. 5km.

Don't panic mr mannering!

You've got over 4 weeks, you can get in shape and give it a good go. Run when you can, walk if you can't, you'll be fine with that distance. And it will focus your mind on your training

As said, just put your trainers on and do it.

Doesn’t matter that it’s too cold, dark, windy or you’ve got a bone in your leg. You definitely won’t succeed if you don’t start, but when you do it you’ll be really pleased! And exhausted too, but that will pass

Hi all,

I just wanted to put here that I’m now a seasoned runner and I believe if I can do it anyone can.

It’s not about going as fast or as far as others . It’s just doing what you can and when you can.

Life is about making yourself a better person and making you happy not anyone else.

I have severe anxiety and depression from my army days and other life issues but running has saved my life.

When I feel down n worthless trainers go on and I go out.

It’s my therapy and I’m here for anyone who wants to chat
