Since avatars are small, I always think the pics that work best as avatars are simple, unfussy and visually striking. Some of my favourite pictures of me wouldn't work as an avatar, for example, because in a small thumbnail it would be hard to see it properly.

I believe you need to appeal to your target audience with your picture..

Thats easy enough for women, a photo of any body part will grab a guys attention.. well, we are simple creatures.

To appeal to a woman, now theres a challenge, that's plainly obvious when you go to a department store; 5 floors packed full of women's clothes and men get half of one floor that they share with home furnishings..

I agree. I always think that because avatars are so small, the pics that work the best are the ones that are compositionally uncluttered, somewhat simple visually and/or are eye catching in terms of the colours and contrasts used.

In theory your avatar is like your shop window trying to draw people in to come and take a look at your profile. Something that makes you go, 'Oh that looks nice, I'll go and have a closer look at that.' Though sometimes you find yourself squinting at the screen going, 'What the fuck is that?!'. You go and take a closer look and it turns out someone's just drawn a smiley face on their right bollock, and then you realise that's 5 seconds of your life you're never going to get back!
