Getting a tattoo at my age? Yes or No.

Hi everyone, I turn 50 in April this year and I have always wanted to get a tattoo but have never had the balls to actually get one done,For years I had just put it off but still had thoughts that one day it will happen, now that day has arrived and I am determined to go ahead and get one, trouble is does a tattoo look good on a 50 year old? also what kind of tattoo would best suit me? i.e small or large...Hope you guys can help an old man out here with some good advice and comments... cheers.

Op I am the same, I am 46 and getting one. It's just for me so I am not bothered what anyone thinks about it. I think we get over what we regret doing but the only way to get over what we regret not doing is to get out there and do it. I am going for a small personal one to me, it won't be visible to the world...just a select few. Good luck with it and congrats for April on the milestone birthday

Wow it seems that everyone so far says to go for it that sounds promising because I thought at my age I would look ridiculous but I have now learned that is not the case, as for what kind of tattoo to get that I still do not know am sure when I go into book it I will see one I like or I might design my own. Op I am the same, I am 46 and getting one. It's just for me so I am not bothered what anyone thinks about it. I think we get over what we regret doing but the only way to get over what we regret not doing is to get out there and do it. Age shouldnt come into it at all.do what makes you happy

....as far as what would suit you? Get something that you really like or have an interest in because your the person going to be looking at it every day

Not quite sure why you’d think a tat would look any more ridiculous at 50 than it would at 49...or any other age lol if it’s well done and the placement is right and you know it’s for you, then there’s no issue.

Clearly I am heavily tattooed...god help me if I suddenly decided they look ridiculous when I’m 50 that’d be a lot of laser treatments haha

I know a bloke in his early 70's who is in the process of getting a sleeve done so age shouldnt hold you back. Even if you only have one done its worth it. As others have said, have a good think about the design you want. Remember, once its on your body you've got it for life so make sure its something you wont regret. Good luck.

Not too old in the slightest, the issue is getting tattoos too young, i started at 16 and the inks and techniques were very different then as was my taste.

Now I'm 33 and whilst my tattoos are part of me it's the part that left with my hair and virginity, given the option i'd start again so hopefully by your age you should get it right first go

May i suggest an idea to think about? How about your sisters name in a scroll across a heart? It would be personal to you and a fitting memorial to her. Any decent tattoo artist will design something sympathetic and respectful.

Also choose your tattooist wisely, ask for recomendations and beware it's addictive lol

I had my first 2 years ago and have now got 15 hours racked up

It's beautiful body art

Personally I love a chest piece with half sleeve or back/shoulder piece. Try for something origanal and meaningful to yourself. A good Tatooist will work on a design with you x

If you're determined then just get it done. The questions you ask seem to suggest you aren't quite convinced particularly if you don't know what style you suit. Depends if you want it across your forehead, arm, ass.

Don't worry what others think, but if you're nervous then maybe a discreet one out of the way and reflect on it for a few months before anything more visible.

The South sea islanders I play rugby with look great with their culturally significant ones, mixed with muscles and dark skin.

Out of shape pasty blokes not so much. And I haven't met anyone elderly who at one stage hasn't regretted them. Fashion/trends change......

No fair play to you mate you have an opinion and I respect that, I wouldnt however consider myself to be out of shape and pasty lol on the contrary I work out 4 times a week, eat well and go to sunbeds to make myself look much healthier as I look far better with a tan.. I suppose that's the downfall to living in Scotland we dont get to see the sun that often lol

If I make it to ‘elderly’, I’ll be too happy to be here to worry about wrinkly tats (or tits for that matter!)

Better to regret doing something than to regret not doing it!!

No fair play to you mate you have an opinion and I respect that, I wouldnt however consider myself to be out of shape and pasty lol on the contrary I work out 4 times a week, eat well and go to sunbeds to make myself look much healthier as I look far better with a tan.. I suppose that's the downfall to living in Scotland we dont get to see the sun that often lol "

HA ha, yeah I have no idea what you look like so my reply certainly wasn't aimed at you personally in that respect.

Equally, it seems every other bloke in the gym has the same tattoo sleeve, side parting hair cut and beard these days. I think when I was younger tattoos were not so popular and perhaps had more originality.

Yeah thats true, when I was younger if you wanted a tattoo done you got one of your friends older brothers who had never inked anyone before to do it for you and you gave him a pkt of smokes for doing it haha times have changed thankfully..

Spend time looking for the right design, check out internet sites, when you find one you like , go to a reputable tattooist,have it on part of your body that if you regret it later it won't show, when you get the tattoo bug you can have them on any part of your body, I have lots and really like them.

And just to add, I thought about it for a couple of years, chose my upper arm so it is hidden from public sight most of the time, and chose a design that meant a lot to me - as 2Tone I sing karaoke around these parts. Je ne regrette rien...and I also want to be in the Care Home showing it off and telling tales about my sexploits (as a previous poster said too). At 40-something we are old enough to think about the implications and just ignore people who don’t like it. You’ve had some really good advice here, just be certain you want to do it and get the right design.

I'm only trying to put things into perspective and make you feel better about yourself as your one year younger than my dad.Man hadn't walked on the moon when you was born.Computers we the thing of the future.men smoked pipes and everyone eat lard sandwiches.It was the old days and many decades ago.You probably waved off the titanic at Southampton dock.Oh as I was saying it's your choice if you have a tattoo or not.No one else's.

No i wouldn't say i regret it but I'm obviously not the same person i was at that age and i can't (not that i would) easily hide mine. They, like my face tell the story of my life haha.

That being said they were part of the "counter culture" a relatively small number of people had there skin inked over usually many years and it wasn't as accepted then as it is now.

What then told the world you were stood apart from the herd"no matter how deluded that statement may have been"

Has now turned completely on it's head.

So whatever you choose to do do it solely for yourself and your own enjoyment..even if you want two W's on your bum cheeks haha.

It's your mind and your body OP - go with YOUR gut instinct. Far too many just go with the trend (this tattoo one was started by so called celebrities) and later regret it. A friend of ours makes a phenomenal living out of reversing tattoos - so there is another side to this.

P.S. according to those in the know - "sleeves" are getting old hat and many regretting them now apparently.

Sorry to be negative but there are always 2 sides to everything.

Wow what can I say I am gobsmacked by the amount of responses I have had I appreciate everyone's advice and comments and from that I have decided to go with getting a tattoo done, it will be something that is going to go round my left bicept and has a thorn effect, I am going to design it myself and incorporate my sister's name into it..if it works out I think it will be a fitting tribute to her..once again thank you all for your valuable advice.cheers.

One of the reason why I asked does my age matter was in retrospect about a holiday I have booked..for the 1st time ever I will be taking all of my children with me, we are going to spain in august so by me having a tattoo done would ny kids feel embarrassed that heres their dad at 50 years old getting a tattoo so I was kinda thinking I would comments or advice from people telling me to think about my kids reaction. X

I was going to get one for my 50th but decided but thought it was just part of me having a middle age crisis and knocked the idea on the head. Glad I didn’t bother.

Oh I am definitely going through a mid life crisis and to be honest am really enjoying myself, bought myself a convertible a few weeks ago lol but I do hear what your saying so cheers for the advice

My dad got his first at 60. Hes had a few since then including two hand tattoos. They arent to my taste but then a tattoo is for you and no one else so id say go for it

I found having my ribs done didn't actually hurt. As for size if you went for a large piece would you be able to sit through say 6 hours of tattooing in one sitting

Just so you know your advised not to keep your tattoo covered when in direct sunlight for a certain amount of time after having it done as it can effect the colour etc so I'd check what that time frame is and see if it will coincide with your holiday

I just checked the time frame for keeping new tattoos out of direct sunlight and it's 3-4 weeks minimum

If you aren't embarrassing your kids, you aren't parenting correctly - son of two embarrassing parents and embarrassing father of one.

Age is a number, it isn't a guideline on how you should be living your life, society might think it is. Think outside the box, be different and Carpe Diem.

If you want to try something, go for it. You're never to old to try something new, and it's better to have tried and regretted than not tried and regretted, in my opinion.

I say do it! If it’s been something you have been thinking about for years then do it! However one of my older friends (68) said she wanted one and finally someone (me, after everyone else laughed at her and what not) actually sat down with her and asked her why she would like one ‘it’s the thing to do isn’t it? It’s trendy’ so I gave her the pros and cons, she has now decided to try a transfer first to see if she likes it, she didn’t realise it would hurt either and doesn’t like pain, still if she decides to still go ahead I will go with her and support her but I also said to her she needs to choose something that is meaningful and not what everyone else has.
