"I'd say 75% of motorists ignore the speed limits anyway " well funny enough... not quite that high... last servey they did on the topic said 49% of people went over the 70mph limit... so if 80 becomes the new 70.... won't 90 just become the new 80, i.e people won't pay any attention to the 80 limit?

"Motorways were designed for drivers to drive at or near 70 mph?.... So what speed do you think is ridiculously slow on a motorway? " That speed where huge lorries have to pull out to pass and which then causes huge bunching of traffic, the speed where you join the motorway just at the point your stuck behind the very below normal speed "obstruction" is maybe the best term for it. Fuel consumption is up'd by this variation in speeds too, the manouvering etc.

"One thing i don't understand is why on earth do people have to try and slip in what sort of transport they have on a thread like this. Its not a my tits are bigger than yours. " Ahh, Bless! Feeling a tad inadequate are we? My apologies for upsetting you. But a question... I mentioned two makes of cars and never said how old they were. Both could have be bought for under £500 for all you know. That is no different to me saying one Ford and one Vauxhall. Bet you wouldn't have complained about that! (As it happens, both are shiney, expensive cars dahlink. The Jag is used to tow the Regal 2150! Love to take it down to our place on the Med.. OK, we live in a tent in our sons back garden, but we're happy!)

"I reckon, if anything, it should be reduced to 60..to encourage people to save fuel and reduce emissions.. I have noticed recently that since the price of fuel has shot up people seem to be driving slower." A lot of fuel saving is anticipation, i.e. not using brakes but lifting off gas to give the time for another vehicle to pass before you have to pull out. Also with some cars you have to try different grades to get the best economy, and judge that against the price of the fuel, generally handbook gives recommendations.

"it's a truism that speed doesn't kill it's usually the stopping " exactly, and despite the improvements to brake systems etc on more modern cars the one thing that hasnt changed much over the years is the bit of the car that goes between the seat and the wheel/accelerator.... the more a driver is complacent about their driving style because they have great brakes, airbags etc the less some feel they have to pay attention to the road..... (risk compensation) this inattention can in turn lead to a reduction in driver reaction time - and the longer you take to react to an emergency the further you will travel before you stop....

" I'm not convinced. I've driven so many different cars over the last 8 years or so and have always entered motorways and national speed limit A-roads with so much caution initially due to not knowing their handling..... I've waited until I have got to know the vehicle before decided to 'push it a little'. 364,000 miles I estimate I have driven in the last 8 years... I've never damaged the front end I a single car I have driven Just don't ask about reversing
