motorway speed limits

Newcastle and Gateshead

our lovely govt have decided to have a consultation into raising the motorway speed limit from 70 to 80mph...

if they decide to do this it could go live effective in 2013

now... obviously it means getting to destinations quicker.. but higher limit would mean that you would use more fuel, higher co2 emissions... and the police wouldn't effective do anything speeding wise till you got to 90...

so...would you be in favour..... and discuss!!!

"I'd say 75% of motorists ignore the speed limits anyway "

well funny enough... not quite that high... last servey they did on the topic said 49% of people went over the 70mph limit...

so if 80 becomes the new 70.... won't 90 just become the new 80, i.e people won't pay any attention to the 80 limit?

think in peak times (AM & PM) most motorways in congested areas should have reduced limits observed by average speed cameras ...

but in off peak hours much higher limits

With todays traffic they could make it a hundred but at the end of the day unless you leave at silly oclock in the mornings you still only do fiftyfive if your lucky

I have no problem with the speed limits being raised to 80. Cars are so much safer than when the 70mph rule was set out.

I do in excess of 1,000 per week and I have to admit that most of that milage is done at 80mph on motorways. Vehicles are all traveling in one direction and to be fair, so long as no aggression is felt whilst driving at this speed, then it's pretty safe.

Hazards on a motorway are mainly the middle lane morons who don't understand that extra lanes are created for overtaking and congestion relief purposes (that's for another thread).

If limits are raised to 80 I will say that I do hope that tolerance levels of breaking the speed limit are lowered by the police.

I learnt to drive in Germany and well we were taught proper motorway driving because we have proper motorway speeds, which yes some of them depend on the weather!!

So bearing in mind this countries weather and motorway system (or lack of a decent one)I dont see how the increase of 10 miles an hour will have any affect....

The m1 is, during peak times, just a slow moving car park, at other times who actually does 70? It might make more sense to ban anything that doesn't do at least 60 miles an hour, as how many tail back are caused by hgv's trying to overtake slower moving vehicles? (Please ban caravans lol)

Either way anything they do (or dont do) will cost a lot of money and time and 'expenses' and probably result in no change, once the increased fuel and emissions is thrown into the mix...

I am sure more of us would be happier if they just cut the duty on the fuel.

If they stopped having these silly meetings about proposals then the budget would still tally with less duty on fuel....

about bloody time too is my reply to that.. its been stuck in the dark ages for to long.

To be fair I dont think its going far enough...

Speed doesnt kill by itself.. its always other factors involved.

I think most people ignore motorway speedlimits anyway.

No matter what speed they took it up to, if you were driving at the limit, some arsehole would always have to overtake you.

It's the nature of some people, they just can't stand to see anyone ahead of them and therefore drive like idiots.

The consensus of opinion of Traffic Police officers these days is that 80mph is certainly acceptable, as modern cars are more robust, have more safety systems and so on.

In a previous job, in which I'd almost daily liaison with Police officers, it was a long held _iew even back to the late 90's that traffic officers would turn a blind eye to 80mph, so long as each driver doing so was driving competently and with due consideration to everyone esle around them. Where that courtesy was being abused, then Police would take action.

I'm probably going to annoy a few of the ones who do want to go faster, but I have found if I travel on a motorway at 65mph I can get 70 mpg from my car, if I go at 70mph I get 60mpg so travelling at 80mph to me is just a waste of fuel. I never arrive later than the suggested time on my sat nav. Of course with tax on fuel at around 80% of its cost of course the Govt will want you to go faster. So how about drive slower and screw the taxman

On the CO2, 70mpg at 70mph, does go down as you head to 80mph, but if road is downhill like to let it creep up, so that less gas needed on the way up.

M25 is getting worse, rush hour starts earlier and finishes later, and at night (1am to 3am) with the amount of temporary road works you tend not to get a quiet road either.

Now if only they could get a camera to detect tail gaters and middle lane drivers I would be happy.

I reckon, if anything, it should be reduced to 60..to encourage people to save fuel and reduce emissions..

I have noticed recently that since the price of fuel has shot up people seem to be driving slower.

I think we should come into line with the rest of europe, and increase the limit on motorways.

As others have said, certain routes are so jammed these days; u would never get up to 80mph anyway!!!

I drive on motorways and major dual carriageway roads at 80mph, where it is safe to do so. And 80mph is a safe speed.

All the medium sized and powered cars I have driven in the last ten years seem to run just right at 80. Any faster and they just don't seem right! Yes I would use more fuel and pay higher taxes if I go faster rather than slower than the current limit, but isn't that my choice?

Same arguement as smokers make, if people like me didn't pay the tax, where is the money coming from?

But at the moment we have two cars that are very economical anyway. The BMW at 81mph travelling down to the South of France gets around 55mpg. The Jaguar is not quite so good and does have higher co2 grams than the Beemer, but still gets over 40 mpg at the same speed. (both figures for the whole 2 week holiday, average)

I like 80mph and so do the cars, so won't make much difference to me!

I think it will make little difference in the long run. It looks like a give away by the govt to try and look as though they are giving something to the public in hard times.

One thing i don't understand is why on earth do people have to try and slip in what sort of transport they have on a thread like this. Its not a my tits are bigger than yours.

Motorways were designed for drivers to drive at or near 70 mph?....

So what speed do you think is ridiculously slow on a motorway?

"Motorways were designed for drivers to drive at or near 70 mph?....

That speed where huge lorries have to pull out to pass and which then causes huge bunching of traffic, the speed where you join the motorway just at the point your stuck behind the very below normal speed "obstruction" is maybe the best term for it.

Fuel consumption is up'd by this variation in speeds too, the manouvering etc.

Parts of German motorways are unrestricted in speed, im not sure what the crash rates are but im certain they arent overly high.

Raising the speed limit to 80 wont change anything, people will still do 90, 56, 60 etc its what ever speed they feel most comfortable with. The only thing that will change is the amount of people being pulled over by the police i guess.

Motorways were designed to be unrestricted roads. We lived in Hemel Hempstead when the M1 opened and I remember the stories of cars doing a massive 120 miles per hour!

The design of the motorways of this country are the same today as they have been since the inception of the M1 with improvements along the way as needed in junction design.

The biggest danger on major arterial roads is not the upper speed that people drive, it is the selfish attitude of road users. Middle lane hoggers, lorries all limited to 60mph (or is it 56?) trying to overtake each other and taking five miles! People who are on motorways and travel at A-road speeds (45-50) Those who stay in a lane “Just because they can” when others want to overtake.

And that is one reason I love to drive in France! Except around Paris, if you see someone not moving back to the inside lane on the French motorways, they are either Belgian or British!

Ahh, Bless! Feeling a tad inadequate are we? My apologies for upsetting you. But a question... I mentioned two makes of cars and never said how old they were. Both could have be bought for under £500 for all you know. That is no different to me saying one Ford and one Vauxhall. Bet you wouldn't have complained about that!

(As it happens, both are shiney, expensive cars dahlink. The Jag is used to tow the Regal 2150! Love to take it down to our place on the Med.. OK, we live in a tent in our sons back garden, but we're happy!)

A lot of fuel saving is anticipation, i.e. not using brakes but lifting off gas to give the time for another vehicle to pass before you have to pull out.

Also with some cars you have to try different grades to get the best economy, and judge that against the price of the fuel, generally handbook gives recommendations.

The 70mph speed limit was set in the days of breaks which stopped you at some point… maybe, if the conditions were OK, no seat belts, no air bags, no impact bars, inferior suspension systems, no ABS, no traction control and often a steering rack with a mind of it’s own…. that’s if you could get the tyres to grip as they were nothing like the tyres of today.

My car, and I won't mention the make [but yes, I do have a small penis] can easily do well in excess of 70mph. Given the makers over in Stuttgart claim it can do 178mph, I think it is very safe to drive at 80mph. In fact, the brakes and suspension are designed for it to be able to handle and stop at high speeds.

I would say it is far more dangerous for something like a Renault Scenic to be near it's maximum limit than my car will ever be. Surely, it is time for us to be treated as adults, if you drive like a w****r at 70mph then that is/should be more dangerous than driving responsibly at 90mph in the right conditions.

talking to a traffic copper i was told that police are unlikely to pull you for doing 85 on a motorway as long as it is safe to do so. go above this and you will get pulled. go above 100 and you will get banned. the boys in blue are more concerned with inappropriate speed than just speed.

you do 35 outside a primary school you're nicked.

you do 85 on a quiet motorway you won't.

exactly, and despite the improvements to brake systems etc on more modern cars the one thing that hasnt changed much over the years is the bit of the car that goes between the seat and the wheel/accelerator....

the more a driver is complacent about their driving style because they have great brakes, airbags etc the less some feel they have to pay attention to the road..... (risk compensation)

this inattention can in turn lead to a reduction in driver reaction time - and the longer you take to react to an emergency the further you will travel before you stop....

cars and motorways are much better now then when the 70mph limit was introduced so travelling at 80 mph makes sense , and co2 emissions thats a laugh what about all the traffic lights & roadworks for months on end where cars are stood still emitting co2 emmissions

I'm not convinced.

I've driven so many different cars over the last 8 years or so and have always entered motorways and national speed limit A-roads with so much caution initially due to not knowing their handling..... I've waited until I have got to know the vehicle before decided to 'push it a little'.

364,000 miles I estimate I have driven in the last 8 years... I've never damaged the front end I a single car I have driven

Just don't ask about reversing
