Pick up 3 pieces every time we go

Use stainless steel straws

Avoid single use plastics wherever possible

It's not just on the beach though Clem, it's bloody everywhere! I did some Community Service work about 15 years ago (yeah I was a naughty boy), and we had to collect rubbish from various parks and roadside hedges etc. It didn't take long to fill a big black bin liner of the stuff!

I know it can't all be recycled, but at least people should dispose of it properly instead of just chucking it on the ground or out of their car window.

Exactly this, so many people today are slovenly in both their appearance and general behaviour and treat it as the norm.

Until folks are re-educated this problem will go on and on like the devil may care attitudes today about most things that matter.

Just had this conversation with my daughter. I live in a coastal area and we are involved in local clean ups as well as generally picking as we go but wanted to make two points about little changes... people are picking up their dog poo with the free plastic bag and then throwing it into the sea!!!

Biodegradable dog poo bags should be standard at the very least as well as a large dose of cop on.

Secondly, if you are using a coffee pod machine, the reusable pods are great and make a big difference.

That's me done... meeting over

Why isn't there more community service? Why don't those claiming unemployment benefit spend a couple of hours a day litter picking for instance?

Hull

It's often the bad mentality of some people these days that shows how they behave regarding their rubbish.

I have been involved with hotel management for over 30 years but only in recent times have I found negative attitudes.

Like the guest on check out, went to his car and emptied all the ashtrays plus in-car rubbish bin straight onto the ground (not into a waste bin 15' away!).

When politely challenged, he said "You"ll have staff to clean it up so do it".

At my present place, we provide bins outside for smokers but they are seldom used, with people just dropping cig butts on the ground instead!

It is laziness plus people don't appear to care or think of others.

It is all over unfortunately :/ but it's the shit at the beach, that gets into the oceans and kills marine life! Just mindless thick lazy bastards that generally have no clue! You'd think they'd (parents/guardians, obvs not all cases) would lead by example to show the kids that it's important to put rubbish in a bin or even home! Rant over! ..i do my bit up in Saltburn, take 3 pieces away everytime I'm there plus we have organised beach cleans. (Every little helps)

We are fortunate locally that we have some of the most advanced, efficient and comprehensive recycling services in the country, but we seriously need to eliminate as much packaging as possible and increase reuseability of products we have grown accustomed to dumping or recycling.

The dogs don’t dump in it. The owners pick the shit up and then empty it into the lamppost. Close the chute. Turn a handle a few times to mash it up and ‘bingo’ - two hours light

" What are we gonna do about it?"

It's too.late, even if we all stopped using plastics right now the oceans are clogged up with the stuff, sea creatures are becoming ensnared in it and it is entering the food chain.

We could all go out now and pick up every piece of litter we see and still the problem won't have gone away.

Still, that doesn't mean we should continue to contribute to the problem....don't chuck litter in the street, people.

(I'm sure we all knew that already but some still need to be told).

If you ever travel around North Africa - if they lucky to have a river bed they pile up months of rubbish - wait till it rains - River fill up and it disappears - good way to get rid of it - ends up in Mediterranean and Atlantic and our beach’s

Otherwise about a mile outside towns you come across plastic trees- trees with no foliage but full of blue plastic bags - all near local tips.

Plastic is a big problem

Yeah, agree with that.

When our local council (Derby City) organises an event in the Market Place, I've seen every bin in the area overflowing and all manner of shit just being left to blow around the city centre. Surely there are a few employees who wouldn't mind a bit of overtime to come and take some of it away every hour or so?

Hull

McDonald's have introduced a recycling scheme in their stores as each one is refurbished.

Litter is now supposed to be separated into marked & highlighted bins. Plastic in one, drinks cups in another and general waste in the main bin.

Does anyone follow it? Few do, they can't be bothered!

The idea of a bottle fee being returned when you bring back the bottle isn't new.

Back in Scotland, up to the mid 60's, I recall the scheme where soft drinks bottles if returned to shops, got you back a shilling per bottle. If you handed in enough, it paid for a brand new bottle.

Agreed

and its not just the UK,

I am not long back from Hawaii and the plastics found on the beaches is unbelievable, not just plastics, but fishing nets, car tires and all aspects of litter.

The main Tourist beaches are cleaned every day, but outwith tourist areas the beaches are left in this shocking state.

.

In saying that, the "World Famous" "Sunset Beach" is no longer there, the sea has totally eroded this beach and removed all sand, there is now a 20 foot drop from side walk to where the sand used to be.

.

Plastics are World wide

There are 2 types of rubbish on beaches

1) Rubbish that's washed up with the tide. .much more difficult to eradicate and quite likely a modern day scourge.

2) Rubbish left behind by visitors. This one is nothing new. I remember in Margate as a child each evening 2 tractors clearing the huge amount of rubbish left behind by day trippers. A lot of people still think nowadays, it's okay to throw their rubbish down. We are too soft on it in this country and there is also an attitude that someone else will come along and pick it up. If there's rubbish outside my house, I,'ll pick it up but I,m a minority.

Too many people are too lazy to bin their rubbish or take it home.

Why don't people just not throw it down in the first place, that's a better idea.

Those doing community service have better things to do than collect rubbish. Like painting fences ect... Yes they are doing a, penance but they should also not be humiliated in public.

Why not just bring back the stocks and throw rotten tomatoes at the villains. Let's not forget that there are a wide range of reasons people have to do community service for, they aren't all druggies, d*unks, thieves and lowlifes

I do all of that, there's no need for the bags, unless you're buying a load of loose peas. You could also use an elastic band, or string to keep things together.

While on my uni course one of our tutors informed us that we could leave packaging at the store if we liked and they have to dispose of it. Some things come in packaging that is unnecessary or far too much for the item inside, just a lot of waste if you ask me.

Where I’m from you can no longer bring micro beads into the country. The type that are used to exfoliate etc.

If you look really closely on a beach you will invariably see little blue micro beads.

We have very good doorstep recycling in the county and great community recycling centres, but it's the casual discards that cause the problem

Until a few weeks ago I had an amazing greengrocer at the bottom of my road. All you needed to do was take a couple of bags and then put all the loose unwrapped produce in them and take it home. I’m genuinely so sad it’s closed.

I detest all the pointless damn packaging you get. Like buying some small tech item and needing a light sabre to get into the damn thing. Make up shrink-wrapped so you need scissors to open your new lippy etc. Grr.

It's never going to get better with the half-assed measures that governments take. Very sad.

As much as Britian is partly to blame we contribute around 1% of the world's plastic waste. The problem lies in the poorer nations of Asia and Africa who have no recycling schemes and therefore crap is just dumped anywhere mainly in rivers . But we do certainly need to improve . Around my street lazy cunts drink beer and just leave the empties in the bus shelter when there is a bin 20 feet away Ffs. It's always Eastern Europeans round here that create 90% of the street rubbish . I've actually seen them walking along and literally throwing empty cans and bottles in the road . It's just my observations and I need to say it . Rant over .

Iv been more conscious of this lately, whatwith d media attention & all I see is plastic everywhere now. I thought I was doing my bit by recycling as best I can but even today I was making a fry & everything was plastic packaged, mushrooms & tomatoes in plastic containers, bread in plastic wrappings, milk in containers. We need to start using more cardboard but then trees will get hit if there’s not enuf recycled paper. I don’t think plastic packaging is necessary for fruits & veg like cucumbers, cabbages etc.

On a side note 1 of our local pubs have stopped using straws because of this, lol every little helps tho.

"I work with a polish guy ...

He says in poland , if you drop litter .... instant fine "

I believe it's an £80 fine for dropping litter here,in the town centre at least.

There was a huge outcry in the local press about how fascist jobsworths were persecuting innocent people for dropping cigarette butts.

I say double or triple the fines (and rigorously enforce them),litter buggers are not innocent people being persecuted by nazis.

I look out of my window right now and see the street covered in litter, despite the cleaner vehicle was down here only yesterday. The park behind me is a disgusting tip with plastic bags in the trees and drinks cans all over the place, despite there are litter bins that are hardly used.

This is not accidentally dropped by innocent people,it is intentionally dropped by lazy, selfish bstrds.Educating them doesn't seem to be effective, maybe cracking down on it is the only way.

A few years ago on the beach at studland in dorset a family got up to go and left a bag of litter behind plenty of big bins at the edge of the beach to put it in, so I shouts out excuse me you have left something behind, well the abuse the woman came out with was something terrible so I picked up the bag went over to the guy pulled open his shirt and stuffed it inside, she went berserk jumping on me and punching me I eventually pushed her off and walked away they chucked the rubbish down and stamped on it. After I wish I had not done it it caused a bad scene for everyone else.

Without going way off topic the human race is to blame for this and all manner of other ills. Collectively, we are the single worst thing ever to have happened to the planet. The sooner the human race is wiped out the better. Mother Nature will then sort out the rancid mess we have left behind. Very unpalatable but also very true - you have to look at "the big picture" - WE are to blame.

If God does exist and we are made in his image then something has gone mighty wrong.

According to the net quote

There’s a veritable shit ton of plastic floating around in the world’s oceans—between 10 and 30 billionpounds of it, to be imprecise—and more than half of it comes from just five countries. Those countries are China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam,

So pressure needs to be put on them or we will not get anywhere!

The government say they will sort it out by 2042, i see no reason that all liquids have to be sold in glass bottles by law within 3 years.

You will still see litter louts leaving glass bottles everywhere, but it will be less detrimental to wildlife

And we can now recycle glass for road surfacing and even building sand, (basically nearly its natural form)

I know it can't all be recycled, but at least people should dispose of it properly instead of just chucking it on the ground or out of their car window.

Why isn't there more community service? Why don't those claiming unemployment benefit spend a couple of hours a day litter picking for instance? "

Part of the plan is to reintroduce a deposit/return on glass bottles to encourage people not to leave so much litter. It was also explained to me, by a Greenpeace campaigner, that homeless people could make some money by collecting bottles from parks and gutters. A bit patronising for the homeless people but there may be something in that idea.I hope it doesn't mean people would become less sympathetic or generous towards homeless people as a result, you'd need a lot of 5p's to buy a burger.

Of course we could all go to markets and independent grocers but then there might be additional environmental costs like the fuel used to drive around these different shops or to cart the stuff home. The supermarkets are the ones who provide all this packaging not the customers,we didn't ask for it.

Well, failing to look after your children and being a litterbugger is hardly something to be proud of either.

Just ridiculing people for discussing the problem, saying they are not doing anything about it and that they themselves are the problem,is not doing anything to solve the problem.

Perhaps we could all get off our high horses and clean up some some litter on our way down from our tower.then we could all go to the beach and look at the sea, which is not full of our garbage being washed to Thailand or Indonesia.
